Personal Narrative: My Interview With Chick-Fil-A

My journey with Chick-fil-A began when I was 16 years of age in 2007. Even as a teenager, I understood the value of a dollar thanks to my parents’ direction. I wanted the freedom of driving my first car and beginning my financial future. As soon as construction began on Reynolds Road free standing restaurant (FSR), I realized I wanted to work there. I completed my application online and delivered it to the trailer marked “Now Hiring” in the parking lot. Little did I fathom this one act would transform my life forever. The Operator, Rob Watkins, opened the door and asked if I would come in for an interview later that week. I enthusiastically said yes to this interview opportunity. The outcome of the interview proved to be worthwhile due to the fact that I was hired on the spot as Rob’s first employee. I was ecstatic! The paperwork and uniform fitting …show more content…
There stood an existing $6 Million drive-thru only (DTO) waiting to be demolished subsequent to the grand opening of the first FSR concept of its kind with three drive-thru lanes and a 152 seat lobby. Rob and I spent four months bonding with the team and supporting them through the death of their previous Operator, Billy Roberson. We knew this was a challenging situation for a team that was broken and needing direction from strong leadership. Relentlessly, we endeavored to build a new culture that did not exist prior to our arrival. Identifying and growing leadership capacity would prove to be our greatest challenge during this transition. In order to sustain the growth that we would need, we successfully hired over 50 new team members. I became aware of the true impact of my leadership on the team. The culture shifted towards a customer-oriented mindset, and the team started to act exceedingly more like a high performance organization (HPO).
