Personal Narrative: My Writing

English 1101 has been a really great class so far. I have learned a lot about myself as a writer. I have found that I tend to write in first person more than I should. It is not always bad to write that way, but it is not the most formal way to write. When I write I have to concentrate on not using pronouns such as I, me, and myself. I have learned that writing is not as easy as I thought it was. Writing takes time and planning. To have a nice, well written paper, I have to take time to go though it a few times to check for mistakes and errors. The biggest challenge for me so far has been time management. I am in high school and I tend to remember homework for my physical classes better than this one. I also have a part-time job and volunteer two to three times a week. Both of these things tend to get in my way when …show more content…
I thought the essays for this class would be more research based. I like having essays over my opinion, but I think I am better at research type essays. I see that in the next few weeks we will be writing research based papers and I am quite excited for those. I think my best work has been my learning experience paper. I think this is my best work, because I had no idea of what to write about going into that essay. I went completely blank on everything I had ever learned and I had terrible writer's block. I ended up coming up with the essay I wrote and I was very proud of it. I would like to improve on the scores I have been receiving for my essays. I have gotten an 80% and a 76% on my last two essays. My goal is to start scoring a 90% and above on my essays. I would also like to work on my time management. As I talked about in the first paragraph, I am going to start writing my essays earlier in the weak (which is what I did with this essay). I think this method will also help me score higher grades on my essays and also make sure everything gets turned in on

Personal Narrative: My Writing

...For me, writing has always been something I do to get my crazy busy mind organized. Writing ultimately is my way of setting my personal game plan. I love to write out my daily and weekly schedule, meal plan, set goals, make lists of every kind, plan and record trips, and even write essays! Writing always helps me unwind and feel more relaxed because my brain doesn’t have to remember everything on its own. Often times I find myself wanting to include every single little detail about everything even when it is not necessary or wanted. I wrote a grant last year in my English class and found that you cannot include every detail in that type of writing or it will come off as unprofessional. I found myself constantly rewriting paragraph after paragraph...

Personal Narrative Of My Writing

...Everyone has a skill, whether it is writing, music, or sports, and I’m no different. I have something inside, along with being caring and encouraging, I have gifts. I am pretty poetic, there is an alliteration, but moving on, I am really figurative with my writing, because I do it wholeheartedly. Another thing I am given is fearlessness. I played Five Nights at Freddy’s 1, for example, got jumpscared by Bonnie the bunny, no screaming. I was on a bus, on the train tracks to be precise, and if I know aught for being quiet on a bus, it is a definite on the train tracks, and I was as silent as an ant. Another time, was where I was at Bonnie’s --absolute coincidence on the name-- Halloween-based party, where there was a walkthrough of a corn maze...

Personal Narrative: My Transcript In My Writing

...I created my transcript while in my dorm room, which is where I do the majority of my work. I began the recording of my transcript around midday on Sunday, February 5th. In that time, I recorded 30 minutes of writing, since I wished to have access to the largest transcript available. The assignment I chose to focus on was the first journal entry for EDU 406, partially because I had yet to be assigned any writing assignments. However, I also selected my first journal entry because I believed analyzing how I function as a writer through a transcript focused on being a writer tutor would create interesting dialogue. In my transcript I hoped to discover new information about me and my writing process, perhaps some information would have previously escaped the view of my consciousness. While I was creating the transcript I found that this assignment held certain constraints not present in other writing projects. For example, the...

Personal Narrative: Critiquing My Writing

...Writing has always been an outlet me. I find comfort in writing to getting my feelings and emotions down on paper. Once I get into thought about a topic the words just flow and I maintain a good rhythm. I really enjoy writing, however, critiquing my own writing, as well as correcting can be a struggle for me at times, but I have come a long way from where I first started, when my first semester in college. As I began to look through my grades for my writing in human behavior and the social environment, I found they were pretty good grades. Out of the five assignments that I compared my average grade was an 86. which breaks down to two 90’s and two 83’s and one 84. I am satisfied with these grades and they seem fair. This semester was the first time I have used APA formatting. Using APA format has...

Personal Narrative: A Career In My Writing

...I really wish I could start this assignment by expressing nothing but my passions for writing, however writing has never been my strong suit, with that being said I honestly only write when it is assigned or absolutely necessary to be completely honest. I have to say that yes, writing, to me is very scary, Mostly, when I have to put anything I write out there for others to read. More so if I do not know the person or persons who will be reading. Therefore I always work best with a deadline to which I set myself up with a couple hours of uninterrupted time to complete an assigned task. The best place for me to do such is at a nice clear desk free of debris and anything distracting. I also have found I can only write in silence, music, television, others talking around me. If not I am gone away from the task at hand thinking of everything but. When I begin writing, personally, I have always been a fan of thought bubbles, or trees, something basic and simple that ties my early lessons in writing with my current writing. With just a quick spree of words...

Personal Narrative: A Career In My Writing

...My greatest talent physically would be my drawing skill set. I recall when I was younger, my dad had me write my name countless of times on this piece of paper. He wanted me to work on my handwriting and looking back, I needed the work. When I moved to California, I was someone who didn’t say no. In 7th grade, my classmates would ask me to draw their cover of this folder we had for a science class. I was shy and the new girl, if I said no I worried they wouldn’t like me and I would have the disadvantage of making friends. Fast forward into junior year of high school, I chose Drawing 1 as an elective. Many of my friends knew I could draw as it had become a natural thing for me. If you look at most of my notes during highschool, I would doodle...

Personal Narrative: A Change In My Writing

...I have never been an awful writer. I have also never been an amazing writer. Over the course of this semester, I have watched my writing evolve a bit. Although I do not see a drastic change in my writing I do see some which is good. Throughout elementary school, I always felt like I was a bad writer. I thought that the most when we all took the writing TAKS test and I received a two out of four. This score convinced me that I would never be a good writer. From then until the sixth grade I believed that. In the sixth grade, I had a wonderful writing teacher who loved my work. She loved my work and thought I was an extraordinary writer. She gave me the confidence to write more and more. When seventh grade came my writing had gotten even better....

Personal Narrative: My Writing Process

...If I am writing a paper, work e-mail, or discussion post for an online course I tend to use the same writing process. I would say it is a mix of both Anne Lamott’s described process in “Shitty First Drafts” and the 3x3 writing process in Guffey. My writing is usually done in 3 stages but sometimes only 2, when the prewriting and drafting stage blend together or if I am preparing something like and e-mail that does not need as much prewriting as a paper or discussion post might need. The first thing I do when preparing to write it get out a piece of paper and take notes. I scribble down the questions that needed answered or my thoughts on the topic of the e-mail I am preparing. Once I have those thoughts on paper I try and began to organize...

Personal Narrative: My Experience With Writing

...I have, in the past, been called a perfectionist. My experience with writing revolves mostly around me trying my hardest to write something I'm happy with and then pretty quickly deleting it when I decide it’s not good enough. For example, this is my fourth time trying to write an opening paragraph, my third time writing just this sentence, and I only settled on the words “opening paragraph” after writing both “first paragraph” and “the beginning of this paper.” It’s not that I have an issue finding the words, I just can’t seem to put them in an order i like. Which is why I stay on the other side of writing. I’ve been reading since a really young age. My first books were mostly science based due to my parents trying to raise me to be as...

Personal Narrative: My Individual Writing Process

...Thinking about my individual writing process has caused me to forget how I begin a paper. It’s strange to think about the concept of what writing is before you actually write something. After reading over the assigned pages to give me the help I need to discover what my individual writing process is I “skimmed” over freewriting. I tend to just start writing and let my thoughts flow and I feel like it’s what best suits my writing style. So here we go. My individual writing process includes freewriting, lists, and looping. I like to use freewriting because I enjoy continually writing and letting my ideas flow out. Sometimes when I get stuck, it helps me to have a list of the things that I want to include in my writing so I can elaborate and expand on them. After I get to a certain point, I use the process of looping. Looping can be considered a side effect of freewriting. I loop by rereading what I have written and decide if I like the order and the theme of my...

Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Writing Class

Even more, I came into the class expecting to make my college essay the best it could be and that was it. I didn’t expect to have write any other essays, but in the end it worked out for the better. Throughout the semester, I was able to develop and nurture my writing skills. Not only was I writing to get into college, but also to prepare for college. However, my overall approach to writing has changed for the better since first beginning Writing Seminar. At first, I based my writing on the basic 5 paragraph technique, but as I progressed through the year, I realized that writing doesn’t really have a specific technique, but instead revolves around the idea of being able to flow. After basing my writing on flow instead of...

Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My Writing Class

...This class wasn’t exactly what I expected, I was not ready and misjudged myself. The way I write isn’t any different, in my opinion, besides the fact I think more about what I’m writing if it's good, and having someone proofread it. This class showed me that I am not a writer, and don’t want to be one. I did not grow as much as expected as a writer, I thought I was going to get better with comma splices, but no improvement. I could improve more on my sentence structure, paragraph transitions, word choice, and my ideas could be more organized. I don’t know how I will compensate for this in the future, I honestly don’t. I guess when I have someone check it, to go over it with me on what I’m struggling with. From what I did learn, it would...

I’ve always worked hard during this course, always trying my best and not giving up. I've fairly enjoyed this class because I get to express my own opinions and thoughts and there's no such thing called the wrong answer. Independent work is what suits me the best when it comes to writing, I liked always being in charge of my own work and being able to know what mistakes I made as an individual.I personally know I'm not the best writer in the whole world but I also know I'm not the worst ,.. well hopefully... ...Starting my writing process can be hard, through this semester of taking composition 1 I have learned that there it is always better taking your time reading your papers to revise them better, also I have learned to just get what I am trying to write on to the paper even though I may not make sense at first. There are many different ways for me at becoming better at revising my papers. One of the ways that I learned was though the this course, is by looking at each sentience indevisionully. This will help make sure that the sentience I am writing goes good with the paragraph and make sense for when people read it. One thing that I also have to work on when writing my papers is that, is being able to find my grammar mistakes. When I find...

Compare and Contrast: the Advantage of Narratives over Descriptive

...Lake” and Judy Brady’s “I want a wife”, both authors write on personal encounters they experienced. The author chooses two different methods of writing styles. E.B. White utilizes a nostalgic reflective descriptive piece, whereas Brady uses a more sarcastic narrative. Arguably both writers do a great job in their story telling skills. Both stories are respected and pleasing, yet similar but different at the same time. The authors’ choice of writing style is what gives one story more of an advantage to the other. Though descriptive and narrative essay have identical intent – to tell the reader a story- narratives are more effective in capturing the audience because the uses of different voices, they bring ideas into perspective and they are relatable. There are special components that both style of writing possesses. Narrative writing usually does not stress adjectives to give the physical details of characters, setting or events in the story. Nothing like descriptive writing, narrative writings are written in the first person in order to convey the author's attitudes, beliefs and memories. Narratives are conventional, while descriptive writings content often emphases on a single event, object or place. Occasionally, writers utilize narrative writing style to tell about the past or the future in broad terms. A narrative often reflects personal experience, clarifying what happened during some sort of incident. Narrative essay topics include recounting an experience where the learned...
