Personal Narrative: The Thank You Economy

Always be adding value

Recently, I was challenged to decide on a 6-month goal. I thought about what that goal would be, and I decided on a one-year goal. That's my goal for 2017. I want to add value to 1,000 people. Of course, there really is no way for me to keep track of how I am doing, so I just keep adding.

So far this year, I've gotten some very nice comments from people whom I've taken the time to encourage in one way or another. But the key words are, "in one way or another." My goal isn't limited to encouraging them in business, rather it's about encouraging people. That's because when you make it a habit to encourage people, people find themselves being encouraged just being around you.

Though, while encouraging people is a great …show more content…
The ironic part is I started investing in this economy when I was a child. I'm thankful for parents who taught me to say thank you. They are two words that seem to be disappearing from our english language, and it's a travesty every time I open the door for someone, and they don't even bother to say thank you.

In inbound marketing, it is important to always say 'thank you.' Heck! It's important to say thank you if you're a barista at Starbucks and your customer drops the nickel you give them as change from their grande latte in your tip charge. Saying thank you is another way to add value to a person. It shows them they are appreciated. And when something is valued, it must be appreciated. Your car appreciates in value when it gets a new paint job; People appreciate in value when you say thank you for their small and large acts of kindness.

Just be civil and say thank you. We're not monkeys.

Always be smiling

A few years after my days of selling Cutco I took another sales position. Do you remember that really slick infomercial guy Kevin Trudeaux who happened to find a cure for everything in the world? Yes, I sold some of his products. But that's not the

In the context of the course requirements, the class is expected to engage with an organization to take an informed action in the form of suggestion or editorial. I have chosen Metropolitan Museum of Arts as my organization. The Metropolitan Museum of Arts is a tremendous resource of collection and exhibits collected from all over the world and makes connections to the world history and culture. The Met Museum explores the world art and history from various perspectives as captured by transnational artists, painters and photographers. The 1945’s atomic bomb dropping on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a changing point of history. The bombs caused a widespread destruction in both cities almost flattening them to the ground. This was the point when World War II came to the conclusion with Japan’s surrender. It was also the time of the rise of the bipolar world and cold war era in which the nuclear paranoia was at the top. The atomic bombs of 1945 embedded much of the nuclear frenzy during the cold war and the depictions and narratives of eye-witnesses were used to describe the weapon and make preparatory strategies. Also, the bombings had a long-lasting impact on the economy of the affected...

Living with Strangers

...streets and avenues filled with the cacophonous symphonies, and the city nearly busting at the seams with people. You stand there on the sidewalk filled with awe and taking it all in while your sides are being assaulted by the passers-by and their elbows. Sometimes it seems quite hopeless to make someone notice you and send a smile your way, because while you acknowledge people they don’t acknowledge you. They’ve all grown accustomed to the oblivion that comes with big city life, or rather the feigned state of oblivion. We may all get drawn to it thanks to numerous movies and TV series romanticising it, but in fact adjusting to the big city, where things are getting lively, is somewhat of an acquired taste. This is some of the things that Siri Hustvedt emphasises in the essay “Living With Strangers”. Siri Hustvedt begins her essay with writing about the “culture shock” she is met by when she first moves to New York City. In her hometown in rural Minnesota it was a custom to greet everyone that you walked past even if you didn’t know the person. The most important part of the greeting when passing by someone was to actually speak the word “hi”. “When I moved to New York City in 1978, I quickly discovered what it meant to live among hordes of strangers and how impractical and unsound it would be to greet all of them.” (p. 1, l. 6-8). You will quickly realise that you need to adapt to the new environment and follow the rules that people in the vicinity live by. Another thing that...

Soft Power

...Relations, foreign policy, and security studies. Primarily developed by Joseph S. Nye, the concept is typically drawn upon to emphasize the more intangible dimensions of power in a field long dominated by overtly material (i.e. military) power. Recently, some scholars have reframed soft power — specifically the key notion of attraction — as a narrative and linguistic process. This literature, however, has downplayed some of the other deep-seated underpinnings of soft power, which this article argues lie in the dynamics of affect. Building upon the International Relations affect and aesthetics literatures, this article develops the concept of soft power as rooted in the political dynamics of emotion and introduces the concept of affective investment. The attraction of soft power stems not only from its cultural influence or narrative construction, but more fundamentally from audiences’ affective investments in the images of identity that it produces. The empirical import of these ideas is offered in an analysis of the construction of American attraction in the war on terror. Keywords Affect, discourse, emotion, narrative, Nye, soft power Introduction In her confirmation hearings in January 2009 before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton argued that to deal with a multiplicity of pressing global issues, the US ‘must...

The thesis was based on IHRM. The main research method was a collective case study, which consisted mainly of dual perspective qualitative research. The primary conclusions of this thesis are that with additional local support, the support of the corporation and better repatriation strategies, more women would be likely to enter into the field of international assignment. Further research is needed in industry specific aspects of these fields, as well as return on investment. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my supervisor, Minna Söderqvist, who has shown an excess of patience,...

Thesis Examination Committee: . 2 M d Johnson, 111, D.P.A. ,G!krMb. %.&I;-; Patricia A. Stokowski, Ph. D Interim Dean, Graduate College Date: March 4,2009 ABSTRACT The humanities have always been under attack in the higher education of the United States of America. Corporate culture of the university requires the most money distributed towards research and specialization, while making employability of the graduates the main goal of education. With two thirds of all majors being in business and finance, humanities don’t seem to play a big role in higher education overall. This work makes an attempt in defense of liberal arts education to our students, and the importance of teaching the subjects like English, Literature and Philosophy independent of a student’s major concentration. Even in our age of specialized and corporatized education, these courses are of great importance. These subjects can help...
