Personal Responsibilities Essay When students think about college they think about attending class, making friends, doing homework, studying, and obtaining good grades, but for most this is not always the case, at times personal responsibilities hinder college success. Personal responsibilities like work, family life and time for yourself can leave you with little to no time to complete school work. There are no shortcuts in academic success, college success means fulfilling academic requirements (ACT, 2007, p.3). The relationship between personal responsibility and college success is a conflicting relationship. Personal responsibility can hinder college success if not planned accordingly.

The first personal responsibility that hinders college success is work life.
Working a full time job, while going to school is normal in today’s society. Many college students have bills to pay or families to raise, and to pay for these necessities college students need a job. Working a job while in school may be difficult to handle. Another detractor in work life is stress. Stress at the workplace for most is imminent. With very heavy workloads and performing at an excellent manner, Workplace stress can leave you with a headache every day and make it hard to focus on schoolwork. Willging, P. A., & Johnson, S. D. (2009) says “Too hard to work full-time and be a student in an online course.” (p. 124). Ways to counter this will be by not taking on any extra projects while in school, and pace my work load through the day. If you do not incorporate pacing your work load when attending college and working a full time job you will easily find that work life can hinder college success.

The second personal responsibility that hinders college success is family life. Spending

...Personal Responsibilities Danyell Johnson GEN/200 09/15/2014 Jeremy NeVille Introduction In my opinion, personal responsibility is the main key in becoming successful. To achieve this you must hold yourself accountable for your own actions as well as decisions. John G. Rowland said, “I’m ashamed to be here today, and I accept full responsibility for my actions.” Mahony, Lender & Altimari. 2005). You need to take charge by practicing discipline as well as using time management skills. If you can incorporate these two things in daily life then you can easily incorporate them in becoming a successful college student. Personal Responsibility Finances play a major part in one’s life; I know it does for me. When I think about finances I think of bills and budgeting those bills. To budget my bills I use a calendar to help me keep track of which bill is due when. This has helped me so many times because I tend to stick my bills in a drawer and forget about them. If I write on my calendar all my bills then I can visually see what is needed to be paid next. Budgeting can be hard and I am still in the process of learning how to budget. It will take time and practice and I know that I will get the hang of it sooner or later. My family is also another major benefactor in my life. With going back to school I now have to manage my time between school and family. I have a three and a half year old son and he requires most of my time. He is not used...

...Personal Responsibility Dennis B. Ellison Jr. Gen/200 University of Phoenix Personal Responsibility Even though lacking personal responsibility has negative consequences, personal responsibility means everyone should be accountable in everything that they do because accepting it can lead to success and a better life. Lacking personal responsibility could possibly lead to negative consequences. Possible negative consequences to name a few include: Overly dependent on others for recognition, approval, affirmation and acceptance, unable to develop trust or to feel secure with others (Lawson, 2011), and being unable to make rational decisions at a given time or being fearful about ever taking a risk or making a decision. According to a journal insert from Diffusion of Responsibility: Effects on the Escalation Tendency, Whyte implies that personal responsibility for negative consequences leads to retrospective rationality because people have a strong need to be correct or accurate in decision making (Whyte, 1991). This is true because they are likely to feel compelled to justify their actions to prove to themselves and others that they are indeed competent and rational. For instance, when an instructor assigns a team to complete a group project, decisions will eventually have to be made to insure the quality of the project. A group decision is one in which members share responsibility for any negative consequences and in which causality for disaster is not blamed to any...

...Personal Responsibilty Essay Personal Responsibility means to me is having the ability to balance you personal, professional, education, health and financial situations all together. One of the most important factors in being responsible is Time Management. The reason time is key is because you have to plan out the timeline that you set for you to have certain things completed or at least where you expect to be at for completion. While you are maintaining your responsibility there should be some goals set. While setting goals they should be realistic and reachable. The way a person uses their time is crucial in planning and management. If you are being responsible you should not wait until the last minute to complete deadlines, because cramming is not a good practice of being responsible. You need to set mini goals of deadlines in a big project and staying on track making sure you are able to obtain the goal that was set. A student priority is making sure financial issues are in control. The responsible thing for a student is getting Financial Aid taking care of, student loans are being paid off. You also have to put into budget that books and schools supplies need to be purchased. While the money concerns are up on the list as a priority, the other is management of the control of finances. It is said that the more you make, the more you spend. If that is the case, you have to spend less than you make if you plan on being in control of your finances. If...

...Personal Responsibility Davia Fullard 01/20/2014 When thinking of personal responsibility and college success think of fulfilling the requirements expected of you. Although instructor’s and classmates can sometimes affect how you feel in a particular situation, you are responsible for your actions. Others have no control of your thoughts and your held personally responsible for how you choose to respond. Making the effort to remain positive and not react quickly will help you become a more personally responsible person. A positive attitude displayed towards constructive criticism is essential in order to achieve the necessary improvements in your life. “Personal responsibility is a virtue that should apply to a student’s thoughts, feelings, and actions” (2011,11). I was able to look back on previous classes view my notes and see what mistakes I had made. One of the mistakes I made was not understanding the way I took in and stored information. I consider myself a visual learner. I seem to perform better when I rewrite my notes instead of just listening to instructor’s lectures. I would perform well on class assignments but when it came to referring to my notes during exams I would be lost. ...Personal Responsibility The last twelve months of my life have been a sea of change. I decided to leave my job of six years, undertake a weight loss journey and pursue a Bachelor’s degree. I thought about doing all those things year after year but never did. One day, it really hit me, my job wasn’t opening doors for me, my education was lacking and I was unhealthy. As a result my quality of life was suffering. In order to gain new opportunities and improve my quality of life I needed to take personal responsibility. In the following few paragraphs I will state my definition on personal responsibility, describe the relationship as I see it between personal responsibility and college success, and outline my plan to practice personal responsibility during my education. My Interpretation of Personal Responsibility Responsibility as defined by Merriam-Webster (2012) as “moral, legal, or mental accountability” In my opinion, personal responsibility has many facets. Personal responsibility is the ability to take care of yourself by means of being healthy, managing emotions and keeping a sound mind. In addition personal responsibility is about being accountable to yourself, your family, and your career by making decisions which are not necessarily easy but will help you in your journey to new opportunities, achieve college success and overall well-being. Personal responsibility is also about taking ownership and being accountable for your life choices and not blaming family...

...Personal Responsibility Personal Responsibility for me is taking good care of myself. Being able to consult myself before I understand any type of task no matter how big or small the task may be. Making sure I plan my day, week, month, coming years wisely. Making right choice in my life. Believing in myself that I would accomplish what I have set out to do. We all have to be accountable in what happens in our lives either success or failure. This can be in relationship family life, professional life, academic, religious etc. Begin solely responsible for the choices we make and outcomes and results that follows. We shouldn’t wait for others to make decisions in our behalf instead of blaming or praising others for what happens we look for contribution for what went wrong. In Learning to be more responsible it is important to know our limitations. It does not matter how smart we are there is only so much responsibility that a person can handle. It is also important to remember that we are not responsible for things that are out of our control, for example, how other people feel or how they react to ourselves or others. When we look at personal responsibility and college success its almost the same. All you have to do is follow the system that works for you to be successful at college in accordance with your personal responsibilities. Make you responsibilities by disciplining yourself to all to follow what is expected of you in different situations. You need...

Personal Responsiblity and Academic Success

...Personal Responsiblity Personal Responsibility and Academic Success GEN/200 October 12, 2013 Kalene Parker Personal Responsibility and Academic Success To obtain academic success through personal responsibility individuals must take ownership of his or her goals. Prioritizing tasks, such as time management, identifying purpose and goal setting are essential in one’s path to success. Even though there may be outside influences that may change life’s course, personal responsibility is necessary for academic success because every choice made is one’s own responsibility and every individual can decide how to shape he or her future. Personal responsibility is the privilege to make his or her own choices and obligations in life. One would agree with famous author Stephen Covey’s explanation. “Look at the word responsibility - “response-ability” - the ability to choose your response. Highly proactive people recognize that responsibility. They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. Their behavior is a product of their own conscious choice, based on values, rather than a product of their conditions, based on feeling” (Covey, 1989. Pg81) Personal responsibility...

Personal Responsiblity and School Success

...| What’s the difference between personal responsibility and school success| | | Mary Love September 17, 2012 GEN 200 Professor Scott Patterson| | The relationship between personal responsibility and school success is very complex. One reason is to focus on your school work. Second reason is to try and manage your time to get your work done. Finally, don't let your personal life get mixed in with your professional or school life. When someone says focus on your school work. Do they mean for you to slack off and not care? Or should you push yourself and get your work done so you can pass the class? In my opinion, I think you should push forward and get the work done so you really don't have to worry about it anymore. You should always keep a leveled head. Never let anyone tell you that you can't do anything. Manage time? How can we manage time if we don't have time to manage? If you put out a calendar and write what you have to do everyday. I'll say you are a good organizer. Most people like that are called "Neat People". If you have a little clutter once in a while it will not hurt you. If you manage a calendar, that's okay too. Just don't manage your whole life around it. Do you know how much fun you are having these days? I guess not after those five toga parties and six kappa balls. Now don't you have a paper due in less than an hour? Hmmm. Now how are you going to get it done within an hour? Well see you should have gotten started when the teacher gave...

Personal Respsonsibility Cause and Effect

...because the words are so profoundly true. In the end we cannot blame anyone but ourselves for the way our life turns out. As I began writing this paper, I really had to think about how I felt about my own personal responsibility. I had to consider how my decisions affect those that are in my personal circle. Realizing the choices that I make now or in the future could have a paramount effect on my family and closes friends. Yes, I am responsible for how others view me and take into account the person that I have come to be. Being personally responsible means; being accountable for everything that happens in my life, including my actions, attitude and the decisions I make about such things as my health, how I handle myself on my job, being a good parent and being an excellent student. Personal responsibility also means that for every cause there is an effect, every action has a reaction. Is this reaction positive or negative? Well, that depends solely on how one handles the situation life throws your way. My true happiness depends on the degree to which I recognize and accept the consequences of my actions and realize that each action has a direct impact on whether I reach my goals, accomplish my dreams and make my life meaningful. I have recently decided to take personal responsibility for my life and finish what I started so many years ago. I always promised myself when I had finished raising my son I would return to school and complete my degree. That moment has arrived...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility and College Success Personal responsibility is something that can help an individual. I believe that if a person has the sense to be responsible in their everyday life, then being successful in college will be a breeze. To be successful, one has to make good choices to get good results. The choice I made was to attain my college degree. In order to pursue that goal, I need to be personally responsible for the work ahead and make it through any obstacles. Furthering ones education and personal responsibility have many things in common, especially if it helps that person get their priorities in order. Personal responsibility is accepting the actions chosen and the consequences from those actions. I take upon myself to set my personal responsibility as succeeding in college. Haskins (2009) wrote, “When applied to education, personal responsibility means that students accept the responsibility to study hard and to learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity.”. In other words, I am going to push myself until I can no longer push. Move forward, do not look back – only look at what the future holds. I want to set an example for my children that if you find the motivation that helps you be that better person, go for it. According to Ellis (2011), “Motivation can come simply from being clear about your goals and acting on them.” My personal motivations are to provide my children with a future that I can give...

...Individual personal statement Over the course of the facilitation module I have learnt many things, whether it be through work in class, through my own wider reading or my own personal experiences being a participant. One thing that has become clear through my reading of Boal's games for actors and non-actors is that facilitation is a platform to allow anyone to experience drama. I found this very interesting as using facilitation in this way shows the positive ways in which drama can be used. I felt that this was an important idea, especially as the purpose of our workshop was to bring drama to an age group that might not have had a chance to experience it. Although our group was not on the same calibre as the groups that Boal's in the theatre of the oppressed it is still just as important for them to experience drama, “Even if they had all been homogeneous groups I feel that this introduction would have been necessary” (Boal,1992) this clearly shows that it is important that we use facilitation in this way. Although I missed a section of this module, due to health reasons, I feel that I have tried my best to put in an equal effort towards to outcome as my peers. I have tried to use my own experiences being a participant in workshops myself and also my experience being a facilitator at a local drama school to influence my decisions in the planning and development process.
