...Michael Wegner Business Administration, Saint Louis University Personal Statement When asked why I think a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Saint Louis University is right for me I like to think of myself as a rope that has been pulled back and forth by two different ends. Although this seems to have a negative connotation at first it has actually been a necessary process that now has provided me with clear goals for my future. The individuals pulling the opposite ends of the rope were my parents. My father is the Vice President of Taxes for a fortune 500 company and my mother is a bariatric dietitian that also runs her own health and wellness business. It was almost a movie scene in which my dad rested on one shoulder and my mom on the other. My dad would always say “Mike there will always be jobs in business, especially accounting” while my mom always persuaded me to do what I was truly passionate about and reminded me that the money would fall into place. Although my passion for personal fitness was growing rapidly as I finished up my days in high school athletics I still decided to take the “safe” route of accounting. While I had success in my introductory business classes after the semester ended I decided to focus on what I’m truly passionate about and changed my degree to nutrition and fitness. One aspect of my life stayed consistent while I was trying to figure out my academic path, my involvement in Kappa Alpha Order. I joined this fraternity as a freshman...

...6. Student and School Data Data collected from and about students, including school-level data, are an important part of the assessment. These data are useful in the identification of the proportion of youth in the community who claim gang membership or who are at high risk for gang membership. School-level data and information from school staff are vital to rounding out the picture of gang activity in the community. This chapter provides guidance on collecting data on the following:    Student characteristics and disciplinary actions School-aged youths’ perceptions of gangs and gang activity (student survey) School staff perspectives on gang activity on campus Prevalence of Gangs in Schools In the mid-1990s, 28 percent of the national sample of students reported that gangs were present in their schools (Chandler, Chapman, Rand, and Taylor, 1998). This number dropped to 17 percent in 1999 and then increased to 24 percent in 2005, almost the level reported a decade earlier (Dinkes, Cataldi, Kena et al., 2006). Thus respondents to the national survey of students reported a decrease in gang activity in the late 1990s and an increase in the opening years of this century. Impact of Gangs in Schools Where they have a substantial community presence, youth gangs are linked with serious delinquency problems in elementary and secondary schools across the United States (Chandler, Chapman, Rand, and Taylor, 1998). This study of data gathered in the School Crime Supplement to the 1995...

June 19, 2011 Chapter One: Introduction I. Topic Selected: As a teacher, one of my passions is to make sure that all of my students are able to learn and understand what is being taught to them. Sometimes this process is hindered when the only learning for some students goes on at school. I am a strong believer that students need assistance when they get home from school, so I decided to research on how parental involvement can affect student achievement. II. Description of Topic: Parental involvement plays an important part in a child’s life, not only during the early years, but throughout the school years as well. Parents who play an active role in the education of their child will have greater opportunities to motivate their children to behave more and strive for greatness. Self- esteem may rise as a result of positive reinforcement. An involved parent will also know when his child is misbehaving and be able to correct the problem before it gets out of hand and becomes a regular habit. With proper parental involvement, a child is less likely to feel the need to lash out and misbehave for much needed attention; they'll...
