Government Shutdown

...Before I go into this paper about this government shutdown. Let me refreshing your memory why we got this far in the first place. It was clear at the beginning of 2013 when the Congress suspended the debt limit, that sooner rather than later that it would need to be increased. It was also clear that a new spending bill would be needed when spending authority for non-entitlement programs expired at the end of September in order to prevent a partial government shutdown. House Speaker John Boehner said he would insist on spending reductions as part of the price of voting to increase the debt limit. And last summer Sen. Ted Cruz, R- Texas, and other conservatives began discussing their plan to block or delay the Affordable Care Act before enrollment in insurance plans started in October, by using the spending bill or debt limit as leverage. President Obama and congressional Democrats have steadfastly insisted on nothing less than a “clean” bill to continue funding the government at currents levels and a “clean” extension of the nation’s ability to borrow, with no extra bargaining in either situation. With Republicans holding the majority in the House of Representatives and Democrats in control of the Senate and White House, the government has come to this standoff. Now, since the government have shutdown the consequences for some has been far-reaching, but minimal impact for others. The Department of the Interior is partially closed, but it affects...

Unreached People Group

...LIBERTY UNIVERSITY BAPTIST THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY Unreached People Group Project Submitted to Dr. Harold Pruitt, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of GLST 500 – D11 Global Studies Survey by Garnet E. Cook III November 29, 2015 Abstract Missions is the last command that Christ gave before ascending back to Heaven. The Great Commission is as important today as it was over two thousand years ago when it was given to the first believers. It is evident with the current events happening across the globe that the Gospel is still desperately needed. The rise of Islam and the current move of Jihad, it makes it all more important that we reach the world for Christ. According to the Central Intelligence Agency, 99.7 percent of those living in Afghanistan are of the Islam faith and only .3 percent of a mix between Judaism, Christianity and other faith groups. Afghanistan is a country that has been torn apart by war since the early part of the 2000’s. Even though there has been war in this country for years, there are still reported to be 33,443,000 people living in Afghanistan. This many people living in this country and only a fraction of a percent being Christian, (Joshua Project reports that only .1 percent are professing Christians) makes the need for the Gospel a high priority. Christians living in countries that are mainly Islamic face persecution for their beliefs and possible death. It is a challenge for mission teams to effectively...

...Starbucks Marketing Plan Katie Tewell Bethany Odom Kelly Snider December 12, 2006 Executive Summary What was once a small coffee shop opened by Gerald Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Ziev Siegl in 1971, Starbucks Coffee Company has grown into the number one specialty coffee retailer. With over 10,000 coffee shops in more than 30 countries, of which 4,200 are licensed and franchised and 6,000 are owned, the company’s main objective is to establish Starbucks as the “most recognized and respected brand in the world,” (Moon). Currently, Starbucks is relying on retail expansion, product innovation, and service innovation to achieve a long-term goal once set by current chairman Howard Schultz: “The idea was to create a chain of coffeehouses that would become America’s “third place.” At the time, most Americans had two places in their lives – home and work. But I believed that people needed another place, a place where they could go to relax and enjoy others, or just be by themselves. I envisioned a place that would be separate from home or work, a place that would mean different things to different people,” (Moon). By working toward this goal, Starbucks wants to open new stores in both new and existing markets, expand their product development process, and cater to customers’ needs to eventually improve their financial position and dominate market share. Market Summary • Target Markets o In the early stages of development for Starbucks, Schultz identified their target market as “affluent...

Quality, Service

...icedTHE SERVICE EXPERIENCE AS THEATER Stephen J. Grove, Clemson University Raymond P. Fisk, University of Central Florida INTRODUCTION Services marketing play a major role in the economies of the United States and the entire world, this has been indicated by the increased interest in the etiquette of how most people are taking it up, the past decade reflects a growing appreciation of the part they play in the frugalities. Lovelock 1991, states that services are said to be approximately amounting to seventy per-cent of the Gross National Product of the United States and the world, and supporting the same notion is Bateson 1989 who indicates that three quarters of those employed in some countries labour in service sector occupations Berry 1980, Sasser 1976, Zeithaml, and Parasuraman 1985 have given significant attention to how the marketing of services is distinguishing from the marketing of goods. The simultaneity of production and consumption of the service product is one key characteristic that differentiates services marketing, according to the above mentioned scholars and researchers. They noted that services exist only in the time in which they are rendered and they cannot be disassembled. Essentially, services are fashioned from the interaction between service providers and customers and, as such, service quality is comprised of both process and outcome dimensions. These various aspects of service delivery underscore the notion that services are complex, behavioural...

Case Study

...rP os t 9-306-037 REV: JANUARY 18, 2007 JAMES AUSTIN JAMES QUINN Ben & Jerry’s: Preserving Mission and Brand within Unilever op yo In December 2004, Ben & Jerry’s head of Social Mission, Yola Carlough, sat in her office in South Burlington, Vermont, talking with the company’s “social auditor,” an external consultant hired to generate an independent perspective on the company’s performance. Together, the two were compiling data for a forthcoming report, Social and Environmental Assessment 2004, in which Ben & Jerry’s social and environmental performance would be assessed in a comprehensive, candid fashion. The auditor had been conducting the report annually since 1996, each year evaluating the extent to which the company lived up to its ambitious three-part mission of “linked prosperity” under which its product, economic performance, and social contribution were viewed as “interrelated.” tC Carlough took a moment to reflect on the dramatic change that had swept over the ice-cream company since she became its head of social mission in 2001. Since then the company had transitioned from a self-described quirky, independent-minded maker of premium ice cream, to a division within a large multinational corporation. When Ben & Jerry’s was acquired by Unilever in September 2000, many familiar with the company’s unique brand and mission were concerned with how the company might change under the direction of a large parent company. Many employees, ...

Refugees

...We are presently living in a world full of turmoil, conflict, and confusion, continually engulfed in various power struggles and wars of all kinds. As a result of this never-ending, widespread violence and corruption, we are also living in a world of refugees. According to the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees: a refugee is a person who, owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of their nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail him/herself of the protection of that country (Refugee, 2008). The current crisis of refugees around the world is overlooked by average, first world citizens every day. The topic of refugees, besides bringing up obvious issues of human rights, also involves numerous other global issues and raises countless questions. In this paper, we will discuss issues revolving around the history of refugees, refugee warehousing and its alternatives, as well as three individual case studies of current refugee crises around the world and how they connect to other global issues. Refugees were first defined and acknowledged as a legal group in the aftermath of World War II, due to the vast number of people fleeing Eastern Europe (Refugee, 2008). While it is clearly impossible to account for all of the world’s refugees, when this estimate is combined with the...

Study Case

...a version of its search engine run by the company from within China. Launching Google.cn required Google to operate as an official Internet Service Provider (ISP) in China, a country whose Communist government requires all ISPs to selfcensor, removing content that is considered illegal from search results. From a financial perspective, China represented for Google a dynamic and fast-growing, though increasingly competitive, market. Google’s decision to self-censor Google.cn attracted significant ethical criticism at the time. The company’s motto is “Don’t Be Evil,” and prior to entering China, Google had successfully set itself apart from other technology giants, becoming a company trusted by millions of users to protect and store their personal information. The choice to accept self-censorship, and the discussion and debate generated by this choice, forced Google to re-examine itself as a company and forced the international community to reconsider the implications of censorship. This case was prepared as the basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either the effective or ineffective handling of an administrative situation.
