Personally Responsible Students The phrase “personal responsibility” simply means taking care of ones’ own life in every aspect without succumbing to fears or to the distractions of the outside world. In order to become a master student and achieve the goals a person has set for himself or herself, he or she must first have an internally defined level of personal responsibility. To that end, becoming a master student starts with taking control of ones’ own life. Such control includes becoming fiscally responsible as well as demonstrating emotional maturity. There are two ways to do this, planning and organizing. While some people may find it easy to plan and organize their task, others do not so it may require more work. One has to learn how to be prepared in your studies by setting goals, understanding what your learning style may be, highlighting and underlining your readings and notes; Time management as far as your readings and taking time to understand your studies, and using your critical thinking skills along with communicating your thoughts both verbally and in writing.

Having a plan from the start to succeed in college is crucial and without personal discipline a student’s purpose might be defeated. The concept of personal responsibility is difficult to define, as the meaning differs from person to person. Nonetheless, being personally responsible is taking control of our individual lives. It is being accountable to yourself what happens when you make a decision. On a daily basis there are decisions I need to make and having a clear view of what needs to be done makes it possible for me to achieve success at the end of the day. The reverse of taking responsibilities is making excuses and blaming others for things that happen in our lives. When we don’t take responsibility for the decisions we make then we entertain external influences and become a stranger in our own very lives. Personal responsibility has a lot to do with college success because as a student, it is my responsibility to maintain ethical academic standards. ...depends greatly on personal responsibility. The definition of personal is “of, pertaining to, or coming as from a particular individual” and responsible means “answerable or accountable, as for something within one’s power, control, or management (Dictionary.com, 2012).” As a result, personal responsibility is an individual being accountable for the things he or she can control. Learning different strategies for success will not only be responsible, it will set up a routine that can be used beyond my college career. What is done now affects the outcome of the experience and personal responsibility is accepting the results of those actions. These concepts do not only apply to college but will be valuable in the workplace. Strategies Often times, people begin college thinking it will be like high school. In some ways they are right, but college takes much more personal responsibility, especially when taking classes online. There is not a teacher constantly reminding you of the tasks you must complete, or to encourage you to get things done. It is the student’s obligation to stay involved in the class, and get their school work accomplished. Some strategies to stay on track may seem simple, but can be very beneficial. The first strategy is setting clear and definite goals before starting the course. Writing down expectations will allow the student to look at them at a later date and remind themselves why they taking the class if ever feeling discouraged. Another strategy that is useful...

...General Educations and Professional Success July 24, 2012 Thesis Statement. While not all successful people graduate college, one must be responsible to graduate and be successful in college. I think personal responsibility is key to graduating from college. If you are not personally responsible time will pass you by and many years later you will be thinking or dreaming about graduating college, and what life could have been like as a successful college graduate. There are four things that I must do in order to accept this responsibility and complete my college career; manage my time wisely, increase my study time, improve my study habits, and make sure I hold myself accountable for my actions. If I learn to manage these appropriately, I will be a responsible student who will be well adjusted for college. Being personally responsible to me means I have to do the hard things. Are they really hard? Not really, maybe more time consuming but not hard. The hard part is being disciplined enough to take and finish classes or a degree plan. Being personally responsible means putting in the extra effort, or taking the hard right over the easy wrong. College is not meant to be easy however it’s not that hard. The rest of a person’s life is probably much harder than college course work itself. What does being responsible mean? Being responsible can cover almost every aspect involved in going to college. Let’s start with how I learn, I should use the most effective ways of learning...

...define it in our lives? I believe being personally responsible goes hand in hand with being accountable for your actions. The follow up question for that will be; what is being “accountable”? “Much of the academic literature on accountability is rather disconnected, as many authors set out to produce their own specific definition of accountability.” (Bovens, 2010, para. 1) With accountability used so loosely in language, we have to make a decision as to its meaning. For me accountability is the definition for success. Whatever my choices are in school, I have to be responsible for them. If the decisions I make during the years I attend college are responsible and I hold myself accountable to be successful, there is no limit to what I will be able to achieve. Career Student Personal responsibility will lead to more substantive decisions in your career. I have never met anyone that their goal in life is to be a career student. That being said, some students do feel like their whole life has been spent in school. If for such a long period of time, you are in school, why would you choose to not be successful? Having personal responsibility for your decisions will help ensure that you do not truly spend your entire life “hoping” to achieve the goal you set out for. “As many as 50% of students fail to graduate the college in which they first enroll.” (Pickhardt, 2009, para. 1) This is an alarming rate. I believe when some students enroll into college they are not always...

...Grooms GEN/200 February 26, 2014 Robert Lightner Personal Responsibility Ever wonder what it would be like if we lived in a society where citizens where not held responsible for their actions? If we did, we would more than likely live in a society of failed justice, political, and education systems. Fortunately for us, we do live in a society where the majority of our citizens take personal responsibility for their actions. Personal responsibility motivates us to do what is important and right for ourselves, other, and our community. Personal responsibility is an important characteristic to live by giving us a sense of belonging and accomplishment. We all have our own definition of personal responsibility and how we apply it to our lives. For instance someone that is married would be more personally responsible to their family, career, and finances. As a single person I would be more personally responsible to myself, my community and education. The difference in the two is that we are more responsible to the things that matter the most to us. In (Webster’s Dictionary 2007, p1074) it defines Personal as “of or particular to a certain person; private individual”. In (Webster’s Dictionary 2007, p1221) it defines Responsibility as “condition, quality, fact or instance of being responsible; obligation, accountability, dependability etc”. ...Personal Responsibility Alicia Singleton GEN/200 09/23/2013 Keri Smith Personal Responsibility “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands.” ― Anne Frank. Being responsible is a learned behavior. It takes patience and effort to become successful and does not happen accidentally. Everyone reaps the benefits from the social cooperation that derives from becoming personally responsible. Therefore, a society that is more personally responsible creates a standard of what is expected and a guideline for others to follow throughout their school, career and individual everyday life. Defining personal responsibility is different depending on who is asked. However, personal responsibility is being liable for the outcome of an action in a variety of capacities. Deflection and entitlement are costly on so many levels. Taking ownership of mistakes is highly important in discovering how to avoid being a victim of the “blame game”. In order to achieve this, there must be a strategy put in place to decide how to proceed in being personally responsible. There must be a list of short term goals that are easily attained. Short term goals allow an individual to solidify their commitment and achieve instant gratification while staying realistic and ethical. Long term goals, however, are achieved over a longer period of time and can be a compilation of short term goals. Hand in hand with creating...

...Personal responsibility means different things to different people, but I describe personal responsibility as holding yourself accountable for the choices that we make in our lives and accepting the consequences. Whether it is our academic, professional, or personal life win or lose we are responsible. Personal responsibility is necessary to succeed in college because when students have personal responsibility it will allow students to achieve their future goals. Everyone has responsibilities, to our families, our employers, and to our self. How we handle those responsibilities determines how successful we become in life. Without personal responsibility a person can become dependent on others for acceptance or to make him or her feel valued as human beings. At the moment my responsibilities are to myself as a student, and my responsibilities consist of managing my time, my health, and my finances. Setting time aside to study and do my assignments, making sure that I eat healthy, exercise, and get enough rest and also sticking to my budget so I do not spend more than I have. These are my ways of taking personally responsibility. In order to be successful in college, I must be personally responsible for my own learning. Personal Responsibility

...on Personal Responsibility and Academic Success Personal responsibility is important in life, especially while going to college. In order to be a successful student, personal responsibility is essential. It is accepting accountability for one's actions and is vital when pursuing an education. Personal responsibility and college success are dependent upon one another. Personal responsibility is accepting accountability for one’s actions. As personal accountability expert Linda Galindo defines it as, “When you’re personally accountable, you stop assigning blame, “should-ing” on people, and making excuses. Instead, you take the fall when your choices cause problems,” (Galindo, 2010). Personal responsibility is not about blaming others for what has gone wrong. For example, if a student received a bad grade on a project, the student can not blame the teacher for giving the bad grade. The teacher did not do the project, the student did; it was the student’s work. The student would need to accept personal responsibility and accountability for the work, and take it as feed back to work harder to get a better grade. Accepting failure is a part of accepting personal responsibility for what has taken place academically. Referring to data collected, 85 percent of an individual’s success is from steps the individual takes for themselves, rather than 15 percent being from other people (Galindo, 2010). Personal responsibility is important when pursuing...

Personal Responabiity

...Responsibility   Being a responsible individual is necessary in order to succeed in life. Life is full of important choices and being responsible is one of the most important of them. Many things can alter our choices: friends, money, or life’s stresses can persuade you to make poor decisions. The dictionary defines personal responsibility as “taking responsibility for your actions, accepting the consequences that come from those actions and understanding that what you do impacts those around you”. In this essay I will explain my view points and experiences on the importance of having personal responsibility for one’s self. In life we have both positive and negative ways of going about doing any given task. We also have the choice as individuals as to when we decide to do or not do that task. As we grow and learn on a day to day basis, we are to be responsible for our actions. As a result, we will get positive or negative feedback from those around us. As we move forward in life we will most likely, but not in all cases, enjoy the positive feedback rather than the negative, and we will strive to do whatever it takes to continue getting it. We are personally responsible for what path we take in life and where it takes us. We can make it a hard, bumpy road full of thorn bushes that we have to walk though, feeling the pain that we have created, or we can be in an air-conditioned  BMW, cruising on a smooth highway. We are the ones who are responsible for the outcome of our lives...

...making a college student successful? Even though there are strategies out there to help someone overcome the lack of personal responsibility, I believe it is very important to be responsible while trying to be an academic success because failing to turn in assignments can cause lower grades, and not taking the initiative can cause you to miss important information. Failing to properly manage your time can also play a role in whether or not you are successful as a student. Personal responsibility plays a key role in whether or not a student in academically successful, but first we have to define what personal responsibility is. It has many different definitions; such as being mature, accountable, and trustworthy. Being mature is part of being responsible because without it you may make one sided decisions or be very impulsive. For instance when young teenagers think they are invincible. Second, being accountable is part of personal responsibility because when a person can’t be held accountable for his or her actions people tend to lose trust which brings me to the last definition. Having peoples trust is a key factor of personal responsibility because if someone doesn’t trust you then they don’t think you are responsible enough to handle the situation, material, or information that they hold. These are a few reasons why personal responsibility plays a huge role in whether or not a person is academically successful. If a person can’t be personally responsible then they will fail...
