Morrison adopts the use of personification when she describes how before Beloved’s death, 124 was a peaceful place where the black community could come together and share stories and food. The house takes on a new personality after Beloved’s death. “Shivering, Denver approached the house, regarding it, as she always did, as a person instead rather a structure. A person that wept, sighed, trembled, and fell into fits” (35). Morrison’s personification of 124 demonstrates that the house is haunted and seems to have the presence of Sethe’s dead daughter, Beloved. The personification establishes the fact that 124 is alive and has a significant effect on Sethe, Denver, and Paul D and that it has more significance than an address. 124 is portrayed

Personification In Toni Morrison's Beloved

...Beloved is a story about an ex-slave woman named Sethe who kills her youngest daughter in fear that she might be taken back to the plantation that she was raised on and thought that death would be more kind to her daughter than putting her through life working on the plantation. In the book the ghost of the daughter haunts the house that Sethe and her family live in, causing a variety of supernatural shenanigans. The reason that this quote isn’t considered a personification lies in the nature of the quotes supernatural context. Because the spirit of the dead child is -- or was -- a human entity, attributing spite to it would be a completely reasonable thing to do, and you can’t apply a human attribute to a human and call it personification...

Toni Morrison`S Zula.the Other Among the Other

...Chapter1 Introduction Feminism is not one unitary concept; it is instead diverse and multifaceted grouping of ideas and indeed, action. The basis of all strands of the concept may be stated as that it concerns itself with women’s inferior position in society sand with the discrimination encountered by women because of their sex. “Feminism is a doctrine suggesting that women are systematically disadvantaged in the modern society and advocating equal opportunities for men and women.”(The Penguin Dictionary of Sociology, second Ed). The term includes many loose like liberal feminism, Marxist and socialist feminism, radical feminism. Liberal feminists work for equal rights for women within the framework of the liberal state; they did not question the structure –economic or political-of the state but they demand the rights and privileges given by the state should be equally shared by man and women. Marxist and socialist feminists’ link gender inequality and women’s oppression to the capitalist system. Women suffer a double exploitation as women and as members of the working class. Radical feminists disregard all questions of political and economic dispensation to concentrate on the roots of the problem. The central root of the problem is the system of patriarchy which leads to all kinds of discrimination against and devaluation of women. Politico-economic questions are not the roots but only auxiliaries. The concept of gender is the real villain and has to be demolished. Lately...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...
