Persuasive Essay On College Tuition

College tuition rates have increased dramatically in the past few decades. It has become one of the fastest-rising costs, with tuition raising about 200-400%, depending on the type of institute - whether it is public or private. In the U.S., students have collected over $1.4 trillion in student loan debt, with the average student having a debt of $38,000, not including the interest rates they are required to pay while they work off that debt (Fay). These costs can deter those that are graduating from high school from going to college, feeling that higher education is out of reach or that college is not worth the price. To persuade and assist those who want to create a better future for themselves, it is important that these extreme costs and the inflation of tuition rates be decreased, and students are no longer paying additional unnecessary costs.
Earning a college degree can be considered necessary towards a quality life and sometimes even survival. Fay states, “A college graduate can expect to make about $1.3 million more than high school graduates over the course of their working lives.” Even those that are able to earn their degree might …show more content…
Some states such as Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and North Dakota have ‘caps’ placed on their colleges, in an attempt to control the percentage of how much these colleges can increase their tuition per year. Not all states are required to have this, which allows them to increase their prices at extreme rates or however they may choose, like Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota (Kelchen 4). State governments may also be responsible due to any decreases that may occur when they are deciding their budget on how much to fund state universities. The less money the state chooses to provide to the college, the more students have to pay for their

College Pressures

...College Pressures College is an institution with the purpose of preparing adults for their specific disciplines. Sometimes a college diploma is a guarantee of good jobs and a better future. Today, young adults in college often experience a lot of pressure. The journalist and professor at Yale University, William Zinsser, discusses the pressures and stress with lots of details and reasons in his persuasive and informative essay entitled College Pressures. His essay was directed to parents of college students, professors, job contractors, and college students (Zinsser, 396). Zinsser’s purpose in writing this essay was to encourage students to take risks on their college journey (Zinsser, 398). To make his essay stronger, Zinsser was effective by using persuasive rhetorical writing tools such as pathos, ethos, and logos. College allows young adults to develop necessary skills and improve abilities which they are going to need later in their chosen fields. Initially, college students often undergo a lot of stress in what is expected to be a self-enriched experience. This young generation wants to become successful students. Moreover, Zinsser works at Branford University, and in his essay, Zinsser shared, “I am privy to their hopes and fears- and also to their stereo music and their piercing cries in the dead of night” (Zinsser, 397). To make his essay more credible, Zinsser uses ethos which stands for ethical appeal (Bernanke, 2010). He uses ethos by narrating his experiences...

Persuasive Essay

...Sushmita Das December 11, 2015 Period: 6 AP English 3 Persuasive Essay #10 College is that step into adulthood. You live on your own, make decisions by yourself, and etc. Many college students have the burden of student loans. On top of that they want to work hard for good grades. Making one mistake in college can honestly affect you for the rest of your life. Classes and teachers are way tougher than they are in high school. So do you think it is really necessary to have them do extra community service? College students should not be required to do community service. First, college students shouldn’t be allowed to do community service because of keeping up with a good academic record. Grades are an important factor in college. You honestly can’t afford to slack off. Statistics states,” 75% of college students suffer from major anxiety”. Focusing is a major priority for all your classes if you want to strive for good grades. You need to work consistently on reports or essays and study so that the material is a known thing to you. As a matter of fact, college students shouldn't be allowed to do community service because of limit of time with students who do sports. Most people don’t go to college just for education but to pursuit of a sport with a scholarship. A NYU student stated, “I have a scholarship for crew and practices are at least 5 hours, I have barely have no time for school work let alone do anything else”. “I also have to maintain...

Rhetorical Analysis On Quindlen

...Friday in 2008 was not the only individual to be killed in such a gruesome manner. An eerily similar situation occurred to a pharmacist trying to shop at a Target in 2011. The items sought after by the shoppers were not what caused the two deaths. Likewise, the majority of stuff itself is not creating problems in the world, in fact, it’s finding new, innovative ways to fix them. The real issues at hand are the people with access to the growing amount of elaborate commercial products. That is the theme Quindlen is attempting to convey in her report: to be happy, people need to be smart and spend their money on things that they need or that actually matter. Generally, I agree with Quindlen’s overall message, however I do not agree with her essay as a whole. Many of her examples and arguments were...

...Informative and Persuasive Essay Western Governors University LAE1 Informative and Persuasive Essay “What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul” (Addison, 1839, p. 76). The pull to become a masterpiece was both exhilarating and unnerving. I knew it was time to continue furthering my education, but the fact that I had a full time job and a busy schedule gave me an excuse to keep putting it off. Year after year, I churned out more and more excuses; the truth was, the factors to consider when choosing an online university were many and overwhelming, and I was afraid to start. I finally launched into research mode and began searching in earnest for “the perfect fit.” After much courting and wooing by several universities offering online programs, three major factors influenced my decision to become a Western Governors University (WGU) student. These are an excellent online support system, a unique competence based approach to learning, and affordability. I urge you to carefully consider these factors; you too will be convinced that WGU is the choice to make. WGU offers an excellent and unique support system to students. The availability of online education promises the ease and flexibility of independent learning. In addition, this is coupled with the availability of qualified human resources to help you stay on track. Truthfully, not many of us are disciplined enough to...

Persuasive Essay

...Persuasive Essay Why I chose to attend WGU Western Governors University LAE1 August 15, 2013 I have chosen to write my essay on why I decided to attend Western Governors University and why I would recommend everyone to do the same. Before I came to Western Governors University, I attended a different online based school that is high profile around the United States. While attending this school I experienced a bit of instability and more of a sales environment than a caring university. For example, the enrollment adviser was very helpful and professional at first. But, after I was officially enrolled and they had received my payment for tuition, it was nearly impossible to reach this individual. Another example of this is the amount of turnover that the university had in its executive office and our department chair. Our business department chair was replaced four times in a matter of twelve months. The cost of this university was also ridiculous, it was approximately four hundred dollars per credit hour, which is extremely expensive. This university was accredited regionally and was well known. After experiencing the salesmanship and instability I started to research other schools that were regionally accredited and had positive reviews. While searching I stumbled upon Western Governors University. After reading just a few facts and reviews, I had already made up my mind to switch. The first factor that really caught my...

Pros And Cons Of Recruiting In Public Schools

...Tommy Huskey English 112 Essay #3 Persuasive Argument Nov. 4, 2015 Military recruiting in public schools Military recruitment has become an important issue. Often in the past some parents and teachers have protested about military personnel visiting schools to talk to students about the armed forces. But since 2001 the No Child Left behind Act has meant that US schools which receive government money must allow the military in to talk to students (Paton). One of the more common proposals is to ban military recruiting of those that are under 18, which would severely limit the ability of recruiters to operate. In the past years the USA and its allies have been involved in major conflicts. There are a lot questions and conflicts with this issue. The positive outcomes of recruitment will be strongly discussed. Do military recruiters provide valuable info? "Douglas Smith, a US Army spokesman, said the job of recruiters is not to make promises but to show...

...INCREASING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EFFICIENCY 1 Increasing Efficiency in a Community College Scholarship Program Margit Brumbaugh Concordia University Portland An Action Research Proposal/Report Presented to The Graduate Program in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Masters in Education/Educational Leadership Concordia University Portland 2011 INCREASING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM EFFICIENCY 2 Abstract This action research was designed to increase the efficiency of a community college scholarship program. The research developed in response to a desire to increase numbers of scholarship applications from students and to streamline the selection and financial reconciliation processes at the research site. The literature search revealed these aims to be common among community college scholarship programs nationwide. Data was gathered through surveys, interviews, and observations. Data analysis suggests that passive information on the part of colleges, lack of student confidence in qualifications, and lack of student awareness of the differences in scholarship criteria are significant contributing factors leading to low rates of application. Data related to recipient selection processes show that committee training, the use of multiple reviewers, and the use of consistently-applied scoring rubrics increase selection efficiency. Results suggest further research possibilities to determine the extent to which various scholarship marketing strategies, and the manner...

You cannot follow the characters, action, or conflict because the author of the review rambles on and on. Without clear paragraphs, this review will likely lose your interest, and you may skip the movie altogether! When you are the writer, it is helpful to position yourself as a reader. Ask yourself whether you can focus easily on each point you make. Effective writers use a single paragraph for each new idea they introduce. Paragraphs separate ideas into logical, manageable, and distinct units. Each paragraph focuses on only one main idea and presents coherent sentences to support that single point. Because all the sentences in one paragraph support the same point, a paragraph may stand on its own. ..."MY TEACHER, MY HERO" In life, people may come and go, some will be remembered and some are forgotten. But one thing is for sure, I'll never forget the person who is known as my second parent. Who did efforts for me to gain knowledge, the one who has been my guide for so many years, the one who scolds and corrects me when I am doing wrong, the one who has been there as I face to reach the stepping stones in my life. The one who appreciates my efforts, the one who is always there to feed me a bit-full of information that I might use someday, the one who saves me from this unfair life where everyone should be feed with the same level of knowledge. The person who sacrifices for our own good, and yet, the laziness that I've shown them, the tiredness that they have seen from me. Nursing's Practical Solution

...The Affordable Care Act: Nursing’s Practical Solution Desmond Mueller California State University, Fullerton School of Nursing Concepts of Professional Nursing Practice BSN 306, Section 05 Anne Johnston-Silverberg, MS, FNPc September 14, 2012 The Affordable Care Act: The Role of the Nurse Practitioner The recent implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has had a significant impact on the American health care delivery systems. The passage of this bill mandates that all Americans must have health care coverage and that insurance companies cannot disqualify applicants due to preexisting conditions (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2014). These changes will undoubtedly lead to an increase in the number of people seeking medical care, particularly those with chronic diseases. It is estimated that this influx in the number of patients will result in a primary care provider shortage of 20% by the year 2025 (Poghosyan, Boyd & Knutson, 2014). With many new physicians choosing to pursue specialties due to the promise of a larger salary, hospitals and clinics will need to start looking to other health care providers, such as nurse practitioners, to fill this role. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role nurse practitioners play with regards to the Affordable Care Act by examining the history and qualifications of nurse practitioners, the current practice of nurse practitioners, the basics of the Affordable Care Act legislation, and potential nursing...
