Spanish for the Future

Specific Purpose Statement: To persuade my classmates to further their knowledge of the Spanish Language and Culture by enrolling in their first Spanish class or another one.

Central Idea: To make my classmates realize all the benefits of enrolling in Spanish classes.

INTRODUCTION
1. Gain the attention and interest of the listener/s: (“Attention” of Monroe’s Sequence) When I was in seventh grade, I enrolled in my first Spanish class. All I thought was, “Wow this class is a pain in my butt, it is so hard, and what is the point?” After nine years of studying this language and culture, my feelings have not changed, but I have discovered “the point” of learning Spanish.

2. Reveal the topic: I understand the negative feelings that you may feel about taking a Spanish class, but being a college student is all about pushing your limits, reaching your greatest potential, and …show more content…

a. As stated by Gregory K Fitz of Brown University, by 2050, 85% of the world’s population will be multilingual, and as of right now only 26% of US residents are bilingual. If we do not change our ways we may be left in the dust because we might not know how to interact and compete with the diverse globalized markets because we are not getting the education we need. As of 2013, only 7% of college students were enrolled in a foreign language, and the trends show that this percentage will continue to fall (Fritz, Gregory K). We need to stop this trend because the Hispanic population is growing and we need to be educated.
(Transition: As you can see, there is a need to learn Spanish, so that we can strength our communication and relationship with the growing population. Through my academic career, I have taken advantage of every opportunity to further my Spanish knowledge through classes. Through my experiences and research, I have discovered endless benefits of learning about the Spanish Cultures and Languages.)

An American man and a girl, probably nineteen or twenty years old, are waiting at a Spanish railway station for the express train that will take them from Barcelona to Madrid. They drink beers as well as two licorice-tasting drinks sitting in the hot shade and talk about what the American man says will be "a simple operation" for the girl. Through writing "Hills like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway is suggested that having a child is better seen as a progressive life change than an obstacle. On the other hand, the reader gets the impression that the girl is not at all sure that she wants an abortion. She's ambivalent about the choice. We sense that she is tired of traveling, of letting the man make all the decisions, of allowing the man to talk incessantly until he convinces her that his way is the right way.
