Adult College Students Who Work

There are more adult college students who are working while they attend school, but this may not be a healthy one because the adult learners are distracted from their studies and are unable to participate in normal activities and are jeopardizing their home, school, work and health.

It is not healthy for an adult student to work and attend to other aspects of their life without thinking about leaving the college environment and just tend to the everyday need of their families. Adult learners are returning to college by the thousands to learn that they may not be able to handle such a heavy workload when they start out, but some adult learners says that they can handle the pressure of family, school and work.

Is this healthy for the adult learners or are they headed for more than they bargain for. Coupled with financial strain, work and family commitments accounts for more than 50 percent of adult college students dropouts according to a study conducted by the Inside Track, a national student coaching company. (Dewey Square Group)

According to the company the adult learners that are faced with challenges that keep them from performing well on an academic level says that they are burdened with the everyday struggles that most high school students entering college with a family would have and that is about 7 percent of the adult college learners.

There are non-traditional students that are among the graduates that need support in handling family, work and school to successfully overcome the obstacles that are leading them to the decision that they are not ready or can’t handle the pressure of

family, school and work. The lack of confidence that these adult students may have can stem from a lot of things including health and welfare. Health and Welfare The health of the students can contribute to some of these anxieties that they may have and can be solved if the students allow them selves time to seek counseling form the schools counselors or from their family physicians. Most of the students in the study may could not have had a good time management schedule to help them along with their school work schedule, if they had a time management schedule they would probably still be attending a college or university in their state.

School support on and off campuses can help the adult learners focus on their college course work while spending time attending to their home and work . The number one reason for the dropouts are probably difficulty balancing commitment can also coincide with the finances of the individual not being able to buy the necessary books and materials that is needed for the school workload.

The colleges that participated in the study were about 17 across the country and their study found that academics were the least likely reason for the dropout rate. The adult learners health play a significant role in the college environment. Learning to control what health problems you have such as pregnancy, heart disease, diabetes and even a disabling disease can have a significant impact on college life. Self Esteem Self esteem play an important role and is one of the major problems that plague college students and can linger over into the adult learners life as well. Managing your time wisely and scheduling appointments that is reasonably in the time frame that won’t interfere with you study time, can alleviate some of the pressure that these individuals have when they are sure of the their academic ability of managing their time and doing well in the course work.

The health of the adult learner is important and managing their time wisely scheduling doctor’s appointments to fit your schedule can be hectic and can cause you to miss class or several hours of class. To prevent the feeling of anxieties of dropping out of college before you realize this is what you really want, stay motivated, things do happen that is not in your control and can be helped. Gather your thoughts and begin again with your goals in thoughts. Overview An overview of the adult learner can come in a wide variety of learning situations. Lets look at this in a different perspective. Who are they these adult learners and why do they choose to educate themselves in the areas that they feel would benefit them in their change of job or career life. What are the reasons why adults return to college. These are some of the questions that has to be answered in order to come to come sort of conclusion of what will come of the educational environment that the adult learner have and will it be sufficient enough in their line of work. Will they move forward in their jobs or will they venture out into their own companies to do the work they have planned for their lives. Motivation One of the keys here is motivation, are the adult learners motivated enough to continue with their studies. The adult learner at the colleges and universities want to learn a new way of thinking which can motivate them to do better at home, work, and school. While their education play a significant role in time management the adult learner are looking for new ways to innovating their family life and work life in helping them achieve their goals. Having a stable family life with people around you that can help you out in areas in which you are known to take control of yourself like helping with house chores or helping the kids with home work, this leaves room for their college social life that will motivate them more in choosing how to managed their time and be productive outside

their perimeters of being solely alone when trying to study or move along with business of planning out their schedule. Conclusion, Just what is an adult learner? Malcolm Knowles spent many years and a great deal of energy answering this question. According to Wlodkowski, Knowles identified adults by two criteria: an individual who performs roles associated by our culture with adults (worker, spouse, parent, soldier, responsible citizen) and an individual who perceives himself or herself to be responsible for his/her own life (1993, p. 5). Abortion Persuassive Essay

...Patricia Saralegui-Carr PHI 105 June 21, 2014 Corey Hunt Abortion Controversy: Women’s Right or Legalized Murder? Abortion is one of the most controversial debates of the century. Everyone knows someone who has been pregnant or debating having an abortion. There are plenty of reasons why women feel they need to terminate their pregnancy. The following information is for those who believe that abortion is the solution to their problem. Yes abortion is a legal solution to an unwanted pregnancy. Many pro-choice activists will argue the claim that it is a safe and relatively painless procedure. Abortions are morally and ethically wrong because they kill innocent unborn fetuses who have the right to life.  During pregnancy, women give the unborn fetus the right to use their bodies. Abortion should be illegal because they defy the sanctity of human life, deny the mother the alternatives to having an abortion, and cause psychological side effects. Millions of people have died trying to defend their country, their freedom, and their families. Victims have been remembered through speeches and memorials, but why are those who seek justice for victims the same ones who defy the sanctity of human life and approve abortions. Let’s look in the Bible to see what is said about abortion. People can argue that it is unfair to quote the Bible on God’s view on abortion. Well, it is unfair because God is the creator of life. It is seen as a blessing to have children and a curse if...

Star Wars Persuassive Essay

...Star Wars, a legacy that has been around since 1977. Star Wars truly stood the test of time in many ways: a wide fan base, well written story, and a lot of content. The fan base for Star Wars is rampant with the amount of people that adore Star Wars. The fan base starts with the older generation which is the group that saw the first three movies (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) which are called the sequels. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, knew how to draw people in by the story. The most noticeable things about Star Wars is the opening crawl text, the film scores, and Darth Vader’s voice/ breathing. Then to the second generation of Star Wars fans which were around during the prequels (The Phantom Menace, The Clone Wars, and Revenge of the Sith). The Phantom Menace came out in 1999. These movies had a lot of CGI (Computer Generated Images). It advanced technology because they did what some people couldn’t in film making. The older generation was still around when these came out and were still hyped about more Star Wars and the origin of some of the characters stories. Now we have new movies with Disney buying LucasFilm. These will affect the third generation. The only movie we know of continuing from Return of the Jedi is The Force Awakens which comes out in less than a month. Just from the trailers it shows a very well written story. People bought movies theaters out in less than a day when they were able to be purchased. It’s rare for that...

...A fail in our streets People over 65 should not be permitted to drive because they are such a problem. Based on the statics of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration they are reported 30 million people over the age of 65 were licensed drivers in the U.S. This is 15 percent of all licensed drivers. John Kennedy, executive director of NSC Defensive Driving Programs said “With our senior driving population growing, there will be more drivers over the age of 65, potentially causing serious safety issues on our roads.” When people get older, they develop health diseases and corporal degenerate. Elderly people loss many of its abilities and they can react to the activities that normal happened in the roads. They are two main reasons that support my point: physical and mental illness. First, when people get older they start to develop some physical diseases that affect their capacity to drive. For example, loss of vision, arthritis or fatigue meanwhile they are driving. Elderly people can’t see the same things or the same distance through they are going older. Also, they have other health problems like arthritis. Just imagine that a senior cause you an accident and then you know that the cause of the accident was that the old man has arthritis. It not was his fault, is fault of the authorities that permitted that people that aren’t in conditions to drive manage in our streets. Senior also can be affected by hearing problems that can affected them if they...

Persuassive Essay: Sexual Education in Public Schools

...In 1597, Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power” and if that is true, then the more we know, the more choices a person can make on their own and the more individual power a person has. For children, trusted adults information is the “be all to end all” and usually the younger they are, the less questions are asked. This is helpful if the information being received is always correct, but in some cases it is not and that wrong information can spread like wildfire among young people. With sexual-education in public schools, students can be taught the correct material so that they can be educated and use their knowledge as power. I went to school in Washington state, and when we got to a certain age we age-appropriate sexual education. A permission slip was signed by my mother, and at approximately 12 years old, boys and girls were separated with familiar teachers and classmates of the same gender and taught about how our bodies were changing. Females learned about menstrual cycles, pads and “why tampons really do fit” while the males learned about why they were getting hair in places they didn’t before, and why their bodies were changing in different ways as well. I was among classmates who were my friends and teachers who I trusted and we were allowed to ask questions like “Does it hurt?” and “Does my brother know about this?” Samples were given out for us to see, feel and understand and alleviated the possibility of the wrong information getting in to our sponges of brains...

Annie Proulx Essay

...Academic essay on Annie Proulx's "Job Story" Choices are something we all make. Not necessarily important choices, but there will always be a time to make them. It's not always good choices, but they have to be made. There will always be consequences, whether it's bad or good. Throughout the story, Leeland Lee has to make a lot of choices. Where to live, where to work and when to work. All the different choices he made, put him in the position he is now. Leeland Lee is an awkward-looking young boy. His face is heavily boned, which he has gotten from his mom, his neck is quite thick and he has red-gold hair. His eyes are as pouchy as a middle-aged alcoholic. His nose is broad and lays close to his face. Lori Bovee is Leeland Lee's wife. She has an undistinguished oval face, and hair of medium length. Leeland Lee is the protagonist of the story, because he is the main character. I would say Leeland is a flat and static character as he is an endless optimist. He doesn't give up when it comes to finding a new job, and despite his wife dying he still gets a job at Unique Eats. The reason he is a static character is because he doesn't change at all. After getting several different jobs he doesn't change anything, after his mom and wife dies he doesn't change one single thing except the fact he isn't listening to the radio anymore, but since that have been an important factor of the story all along, it can also show a lot about how he has changed. The story starts November...

Essay 1

...An essay is a piece of writing which is often written from an author's personal[->0] point of view[->1]. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism[->2], political manifestos[->3], learned arguments[->4], observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article[->5] and a short story[->6]. Almost all modern essays are written in prose[->7], but works in verse[->8] have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope[->9]'s An Essay on Criticism[->10] and An Essay on Man[->11]). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke[->12]'s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding[->13] and Thomas Malthus[->14]'s An Essay on the Principle of Population[->15] are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education[->16]. Secondary students are taught structured essay formats to improve their writing skills, and admission essays[->17] are often used by universities[->18] in selecting applicants and, in the humanities and social sciences, as a way of assessing the performance of students during final exams. The concept of an "essay" has been extended to other mediums beyond writing. A film essay is a movie that often incorporates documentary film making styles and which focuses more on the evolution of a theme or an idea. Liking Is for Cowards, Go for What Hurts

...We all know love. We have all loved in some kind of way. We love our parents, significant others and even our friends. But we can also love other things like animals or material things. But what is the difference between loving and liking? And is it better not to love and feel pain or to love and be hurt in the progress? Jonathan Franzen seeks to answer these questions in his essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts”. The essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is, as mentioned, written by Jonathan Franzen and published in The New York Times, May 28, 2011. Jonathan Franzen is born in 1959, and he is an acclaimed American novelist and essayist. The essay is based on the commencement speech he delivered at Kenyon College in Ohio, USA. “Our technology has become extremely adept in creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship, in which the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly. (…)” As Franzen claims in his essay, many people can feel like they love their technological object. It gives them a satisfaction, which human interaction maybe wouldn’t. Franzen however thinks, that people in general don’t love material things: they like them. There is a major difference between loving and liking – even though it might appear small. “Liking, in general, is commercial culture’s substitute for loving.” Products are made to be likeable, but if that concept in transferred to a person, you would instantly see...

Reaction - Salvation

...Reaction – “Salvation” The nonfiction short essay “Salvation” written by Langston Hughes in 1940, presents a theme on the literal and often manipulated perception of children. Hughes narrates the essay as he recounts his disappointing attempt at salvation. Hughes aunt told him that when she was saved by Jesus she saw a light, and felt something happen within herself. As children will do, Hughes took her story literally and was heartbroken as he sat in front of the church and watched other children “saved” while he was not. He believed that Jesus must not want him because he did not see or feel anything. In the end, Hughes is forced to lie about accepting Jesus and in turn rejects the Christian faith all together. I related to Hughes story on many accounts. I am a mother of three young children who perceive everything in life literally, and as a young girl I was raised in a very religious environment. I could visualize and almost feel Hughes devastation as he sat at the front of the church crushed by the thoughts of God not wanting him. “Still I kept waiting to see Jesus” (Barnet, Cain, & Burto, 2011, pp. 351). One of the churches that my family attended for a short time during my childhood practiced speaking in tongs. I specifically remember feeling just like Hughes during a service when other children were speaking in unnatural languages perceived to be sent from God himself. I could not understand why I was not chosen to talk for God and intern was hurt and...

No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch

...Dog Food Fried, Flipped and Devoured Eating dog food may not be seen as the easiest thing to stomach because the smell, texture and by-products found within the mixture are thought of as awful and revolting. In Ann Hodgman’s “No Wonder They Call Me a Bitch”, although the title may suggest otherwise, different types of dog food are discussed. In this essay, Hodgman aims to inform her readers about the inequality in different types of dog food, as well as to entertain and amuse. Hodgman is writing to a broad audience, one of dog lovers and owners, as well as those that may be curious as to what is really in dog food, or more generally the packaging and processing of mass-produced food of any kind. Language, description and humor are techniques Hodgman skillfully uses to create a strong, convincing essay. Within this essay, Hodgman continually uses diction and syntax that a diverse audience can understand and relate to. In the beginning, the reader feels repulsed by what is written. However, through a light tone of voice and sentence structure, the levity of the experiences and feelings occurring throughout the experiment is conveyed. The personal anecdotes and thoughts make the tone feel less formal and much more story-like. In this way, Hodgman produces a piece that connects the information and readers Shortly after capturing interest through stating questions, Hodgman begins using large amounts of description. Each type of dog food is explained and illustrated so well that...
