Peter Cartwright was an American Methodist, revivalist,and preacher in the Midwest, as well as twice an elected legislator in Illinois. He was a Methodist missionary who helped start America's Second Great Awakening. He stood for Evangelical Methodism which was becoming one of the fastest growing religions in the nations during the 1800s along with the Baptists.
The Awakening is best known for the large camp meetings that led incredible numbers of people towards conversion through a style of preaching and audience participation.
