Kiewit Corporation is an employee-owned Fortune 500 contractor that is based in Omaha, Nebraska. Privately owned, it is one of the biggest contractors in the world. Some recent projects have included several bridge retrofitting’s in the San Francisco Bay Area, Interstate H-3 project in Hawaii, and building the world's largest geodesic dome at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. Along with important mining and off-shore operations, the company also contracts small grading (dirt moving) projects for residential or commercial development. Kiewit’s history goes all the way back to 1884, when two brothers named Peter and Andrew Kiewit formed a company called Kiewit brothers in Omaha, neb, and it was a masonry partnership. In 1904 they ended their partnership with each other and Peter became the man in charge of the company.Peter Kiewit went on to have six children. His fifth child and youngest son, also named Peter, was born in the year of 1900. This is the Peter Kiewit, who is best known for making the company into a national company. The company into a major national contractor during the 20th century. In 1912, 23-year-old Ralph and 21-year-old George joined their father as partners in the business. When the elder Peter Kiewit died in 1914, Ralph then began to take charge of the business. In 1924, the company reached the 40-year mark and landed its first million-dollar contract — the 10-story Livestock Exchange Building in the South Omaha meat-packing district. Young Peter served as project superintendent. Later that year George left the company, then the burden of running the company fell to Ralph and Peter. Peter took care the field operations, while Ralph supervised the estimating and bidding activities. The company landed several significant projects in the late 1920s that remain Nebraska landmarks: the Nebraska State Capitol Tower (1927), Joslyn Art Museum (1928) and Union Station
