When Pets Become Predators

What is an owner to do with a pet that has become too aggressive to handle, too expensive to feed or too large to house? This is a question many uneducated exotic pet owner’s face soon after purchasing a juvenile exotic reptile. Unfortunately, for many pet owner’s, the answer is to release the pet into our neighborhoods and parks creating a multitude of problems for homeowner’s, State officials and the environment. Probably the best known pet to become a predator is the Burmese python, also known as the Indian python. Burmese pythons average approximately 13 feet in length, but can grow to over 20 feet. (Indian Python) Their weight may exceed 200 pounds. Most owners begin feeding their juvenile pythons mice, but a snake grows quickly and graduates to rabbits, chickens and eventually pigs. A full grown python requires a cage of at least 8 feet in length. Because a Burmese python has a life expectancy of over 20 years, the potential buyer must carefully evaluate the long term commitment required with this purchase.
Another well know pet to predator is the Nile monitor lizard. These lizards average 4 to 6 feet in length, but can soon grow to 7 feet. They are a carnivorous lizard that as a juvenile begins eating crickets, then graduates to gold fish and later to rats and other small animals. When full grown, monitor lizards like the Burmese python, need an enclosure of at least 8 feet, however, it is recommended that they have their own room. Because they are water lizards, an owner should also provide a monitor lizard with a small swimming pool. The Nile monitor lizard can live 10 to 15 years. Again, a potential buyer must evaluate the long term responsibilities associated with this purchase.
There are numerous types of reptiles released into neighborhoods and parks every day, but the two reptiles described above are probably most reported by the media and therefore, the most well known. Due to the frequency of their release and the threat they pose to the community and environment, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has named six reptiles as “Reptiles of Concern”. They are the Indian or Burmese python, reticulated python, African rock python, amethystine or scrub python, green anaconda and the Nile monitor lizard. Where in the State of Florida are these reptiles a problem? “Over the last year, pythons have been found in the wild from Key Largo to Glades County -- and a new study suggests the exotic predators could spread beyond South Florida.” (Morgan) There are approximately eleven southern states that the python could thrive and reproduce, but so far are only populating areas of Florida. In the Miami area, pythons have been known to consume small dogs and cats. In the Everglades, scientists report that pythons are eating native species of birds, rodents, alligators, the endangered species of Key Largo wood rats, and rare round-tailed muskrats. (United States) Because of their massive size, pythons are also capable of overtaking children and adults. The gigantic Nile monitor lizards are thriving and populating on the west coast of Florida, on the canal banks of the Cape Coral area and in the Sanibel Island National Wildlife Refuge. Their diet consists of just about anything from rodents, to bird eggs, to sea turtle eggs. An example of their danger to our environment is evident in the article “Problem Pets” by Elizabeth Carney. The author states “Wildlife officials are also concerned that Nile monitor lizards may be feeding on the eggs of the endangered burrowing owl.” (Carney 6) The lizards are nuisances to homeowner’s, climbing screened enclosures, defecating in swimming pools and sunning on pool decks. They have also been known to make small pets into meals. The lizards are very aggressive and intimidating looking creatures but so far, no deaths have been reported as the result of a Nile monitor lizard attack.
There is an additional lizard that is growing in numbers in Palm Beach County. A colony of green iguanas is becoming so large that “County commissioners will ask the state Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission to add green iguanas to the list of ‘reptiles of concern’“. (Hafenbrack) The green iguanas grow to 5 feet in length, but are different then the other reptiles of concern because they only eat plants do not pose a threat to the environment. They are merely a nuisance to homeowner’s. Not everyone believes placing the green iguana on the “Reptile of Concern” list would reduce the number of green iguanas. In the article “Iguanas Running Amok Prompt County to Press for State Control”, Scott Hardin, the wildlife commission's exotic-species coordinator, is quoted saying “efforts to restrict the sale of iguanas would have no effect on South Florida's population. There is nothing we could do in terms of restricting the sale that is going to hold a candle to what is out there reproducing already in the wild." (Sorentrue 1A) As you can see any of the pets mentioned can become quite a nuisance or danger to our neighborhoods and the environment.
What many people want to know is how did these non-native reptiles come to live and populate our neighborhoods and parks. I was able to locate three possible theories. Some believe these exotic pets are released by their owner’s when they outgrow their aquariums. The author of “One Man’s Pet, Another’s Invasive Species” believes they are pets that may have escaped when homes were destroyed during Hurricane Andrew in 1992. (Achenbach A01) The last theory I found is in the article “The Dragon of Cape Coral”, the author believes they “were intentionally dumped, perhaps by someone hoping to start a breeding colony for subsequent recapture and sale.” (The Dragon A12) I believe there is not one correct theory, but, possibly a combination of the three theories.
The State of Florida is working diligently to reduce the number of impulse reptile purchases. Beginning January 1st, 2008, a consumer wanting to purchase an exotic reptile on the reptiles of concern list, must be at least eighteen years old, complete an application and questionnaire regarding the dietary needs, husbandry and safe housing of the animal. The potential buyer must pay a $100 fee to obtain a permit for the reptile and be willing to have a microchip implanted in their pet when its size reaches two inches in diameter. In addition, the owner must have a disaster plan for the care and housing of their exotic animal during floods and hurricanes, and must report the whereabouts of the animal each year to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. State agencies are also working to inform reptile owners of Florida Statute 379.305 making it illegal to release non-native invasive species into the wild. Releasing a reptile of concern is a Level Three Violation, punishable a provided in s. 379.4015.
To further discourage owners from releasing their exotic animals, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission sponsors a Non-Native Pet Amnesty Day for pet owners to turn in all unwanted or illegal exotic animals. During the Amnesty Day, owner’s are not asked any questions and do not pay a fee to surrender their animals. Volunteers then attempt to place all surrendered animals. (Tao)
Purchasing a pet should never be an impulse decision. This is especially true of non-native exotic animals. If you are thinking about obtaining a non-native exotic animal like a Burmese python or a Nile Monitor lizard, it is important to complete extensive research regarding the specific animal. Educate yourself regarding the care, temperament, adult size and life of expectancy of any potential pets. Remember, if you release a non-native species into the wild, it is illegal, may pose a threat to humans and domesticated animals, and is a threat to our native environment.

Pet Therapy

...Pet therapy Throughout the history, animals played very important role in human existence – protection. People always believe in animal’s supernatural power: for example, in Egypt people worshiped cats and believed in Bastet – a goddess with cat’s face who protected people from evil spirits (Mark, 2012). In present days, many people still believe in animal’s supernatural power and think that to have a pet in the house will help them to keep evil spirits away and keep households safe. Of course, animals have no supernatural power but for example to have a dog in the house is truly good for protection like burglary or a cat can keep rodents away. Unfortunately, people do not think of a pet more than protectors or somebody to have around the house. It is not so ordinary to have a pet these days and people used to them so much that they do not think about how many health relating benefits pets bring to a household. Back in 18th century, Dr. William Tuke in his mental institution, that located in York, England, conducted an experiment that used animals in therapy (Perelle & Granville, 1993). His idea was to help patients to control themselves by having a dependable creature (Perelle & Granville, 1993). He was the first person to record such an experiment (Perelle & Granville, 1993). After Dr. Tuke’s success in animal- therapy, many other facilities from different countries begun to use the same method with positive results (Perelle & Granville, 1993). In 1969 Dr...

Why Pets

...Reasons why People Keep Pets Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation Different people keep pets for different reasons. Some people will keep pets for companionship, others for their playfulness while others for their unique characteristics and personalities. Many like pets because of the fun that they bring to their lives, though not so many people have focused on other benefits that pets may come along with (Barnes, 2007). Most people who keep pets have come out and said that the pets help them relieve stress and avoid lonely moments. Pets such as dogs are considered important in the sense that they increase the owner’s chances for taking outdoor exercise activities. Individuals who keep dogs will have no option rather than to take the dog for a walk, mostly on a daily basis. The dog and the owner in this case will have the chance to boost their physical fitness (Barnes, 2007). Again, it is in such a walk that the keeper of the pet will get the opportunity to meet other dog owners in the field, making the friendship circle bigger and enriching the life of the owner. Some people on the other hand prefer keeping fish as their pets. Such an activity calls for extra time and commitment from the owner. Keeping fish as pets introduces additional activities that the owner must attend to on a daily basis and hence the owner commits his time and effort to doing what he/she likes best. Some individuals prefer...

House Pet

...Gustavo Gomez Eng. 101 Murphree 12 February 2016 The life of a House Pet The world has many interesting things to offer either it be an animal or the most interesting man in the world. But something that I have lived with for years made me grow so much interest in a very odd way. Our house pet “Princess” she is a very small dog or what other people might call a toy dog since they are so small and fragile. A house pet might be so simple but have so much to show to someone who doesn’t know very well. I’ve been observing our house pet “Princess” for quite a while now and I can say many habits or attitudes this dog has to show for it self really do make it seem different from other pets. Princess might seem like a very fragile dog that would like to be in ones arm and petted till she falls asleep in your hands but this is not the case. Princess is the type of dog to back away and contain space away from strangers. Her trust only lies on the people she sees on a daily basis and in this occasion it’s mostly everybody in our home. I say mostly since she doesn’t really like to be around children who chase her around and needed less to say we have a couple of those living with us at home. It is very obvious to say that my mother and princess have grown one of the biggest bonds between each other because they seem to always be near each other whenever given the chance. Like many humans that have a daily routine and habits princess seems to have many similar traits to these...

Having Pets

...Since I remember, I have always wanted a pet but my mom has said several times no that I could not be able to count them. However, my desire of having one has not changed. Although saying that having pets has become in a popular trend nowadays is not completely true –taking into account that this trend exists since humans began to domesticate animals–, reality has changed because now there are easy ways to get a new member in a family: adopting. Nevertheless, there is a huge percentage of people who are like my mother even if getting an animal is not anymore a money issue. People who have a pet can easily state they are happier than people who do not, but no-owners can say they do not face the pressure of responsibilities such as cleaning pets’ matters. Having a pet could bring, as owners say, happiness to the family, but people that are eager of having a new member have to know that it implies certain benefits apart of joy as well as it could bring some disadvantages. Pets are not just a source of happiness or joy; in fact, having them involves a reasonable number of drawbacks. First, animals are carriers of a numerous diseases. For example, cats are known to spread toxoplasmosis, a parasitic disease that could cause seizures and a weak immune system if the parasite affects a fetus. Likewise, rabies is a rare viral disease that can be transmitted if an infected animal bites a person. However, the most common problem that dog owners have to deal with is to be infected with...

A Dog for a Pet

...A multi-purpose pet I wanted to inform you that I am planning to adopt a pet in the near future. I’ve considered the various pets available for adoption and have come to the conclusion that adopting a dog would be the best choice for both you and me. I will explain a few of the reasons that I feel adopting a dog is our best choice; Dogs are very loyal to humans, they teach children responsibility, and will help protect our family and homes from criminals. The loyalty of a dog is unsurpassed by any other type of pet. Dogs are often referred to as, “Man’s best friend.” Throughout the world, dogs are used to help people with disabilities, assist police in dangerous law enforcement, and provide companionship to patients recovering from serious health issues. Dogs continuously display their loyalty to humans. As a child, I remember spending hours on end with my dog, Rango. No matter how down or lonely I may have been at times, Rango was always willing and available to play with me. He was my dog and I was responsible for making sure that he was properly fed and well taken care of. Looking back, I realize the sense of responsibility that I gained from having a dog. Now, as a Father, I would like for my children to have a dog, so that they too can learn to be responsible during their childhood. There are few feelings greater than knowing that your family and home are safe. A dog’s natural instincts make them great “security guards”. Their sense of smell and hearing are...

Pet Therapy

...Schneider, MS, & Harley, LP. (2006). How dogs influence the evaluation of psychotherapists. Anthrozoose, 19(2), 1. Pets are believed to have a positive effect on people and their ability to interact with others, enhance their perception and lower anxiety. For this study four video tapes were presented to 85 subjects who were all students at the University of Toronto. Two therapists made two different video tapes introducing themselves as psychotherapists and the methods they use in their therapy. One video was of the therapist alone and the other was with them and their pet, in this case a dog. Randomly the subjects watched one of the video tapes and where then asked to fill out questionnaires. Two of the three hypothesis were confirmed; animals do have a positive effect on self-disclosure and the overall ratings of the therapist were higher than those without the dogs present. 2. Three different hypothesis were attempted in this experimental study. Would the therapists with dogs score a higher overall rating without a dog? Would those therapist with dogs elicit a higher level of self-disclosure from participants? Would there be an interaction effect for attitude toward pets? All three of these hypothesis were being tested on the theories that animals have a significant impact on human well-being, that there is a positive outcome on social interaction, and positive outcomes of animals around patients towards their physiological and psychological health. 3. For this study...

Pets Are People, Too!

...having a pet means constant cleaning, getting up in the middle of the night to answer the call of nature, feeding, and interrupting your activities to acknowledge them in their need for attention, but most of all, a burden, and an agonizing chore. For others, having a pet elicits feelings of unbridled joy, endless love and affection, and above all else, never having to be alone. For those select individuals, it includes labeling them as a member of the family without whom your family feels incomplete. Such a distinction speaks of pure love, devotion, and a deep bond, but the questions must be asked: how beneficial is the relationship between animals and people? How similar are animals in comparison to other people? Should pet owners dress their pets similarly to how they dress? How would someone handle their pet's welfare in the event of their death? If these questions were put to pet owners, there would likely be a myriad of responses given, but all of them would probably agree on one thing: having an animal for a companion would enhance the quality of living for both the human owner and their loving quadruped companion. How Beneficial is The Relationship Between Animals and People? Ask anyone who owns a dog or a cat, and they would tell you many times over about the benefits of having their furry friend(s) around the house. Some would even go on to argue that most of the time, these creatures are almost human. Author Kathleen Kete asserts that children, like pets, demand...

Pet Adoption

...where people prefer to adopt other pets, and never opt to go a pet-dog. Many have associated their preference to the easiness in training the pet as well as the difficulties experienced when outsourcing for the same. Personally I feel that a dog would make an excellent pet on my side. In fact, dogs are indeed the best pets one would wish to have as they provide the desired companionship and support to the owner. Adopting a dog is in itself fulfilling since I will deliberately take care of the pet while providing the necessary care and amenities. Majority of dogs up for adoption are pure breeds, thus possess excellent agility and obedience levels (Banks, 2006). Dogs are beneficial pets especially because of the endless options which a dog can undertake. There are competitions available for the pet dogs for instance they can be useful for therapy purposes or even security services. Such competition avenues are not available to other pets like cats and lizards. As long as the dogs are spayed and neutered on regular basis, most illnesses which affect them will be put at-bay. Thus expensive medications due to illnesses like hip dysplasia, cancer or chronic seizures will not be undertaken translating to a lot of savings. Other dogs are already trained on commands and obedience thus bonding becomes easy. This is not the case with other pets like bird or even lizard where the adopter has to engage in serious training prior to familiarizing with the pets behavior. More often than not, you...

Exotic Pets

...The Dangers of Exotic Pets Pets can be good companions to humans, but there should be a line that should never be crossed. Exotic animals have become very popular, but they are also dangerous in so many ways. The dangers are not only for the owners of exotic animals, but also for the general public. Disease is also one of the main concerns regarding exotic pets that can affect everyone. Exotic animals are attractive and wonderful creatures, but they are dangerous when people turn them into pets and raise them in captivity for that reason they should never be pets. Exotic animals do not make good pets as they require especial care that cannot be provided when they are raised in captivity. They are wild animals that deserve to be free, and not caged in small cages. Taking care of all the necessities these animals need would be impossible as they are not being raised on their natural habitat, and this is not only cruel but also abusive because it causes stress to the animals. Dr. Jennifer Conrad is the veterinarian that started the paw project, and in her documentary she brings to light the truth about declawing not only exotic cats but domestic cats as well. Declawing cats cripples them for life, and the cats are in constant pain. Dr. Conrad states on her...
