With the recent acquisition of Tim Tebow, and all the baggage that comes with him, the Jets may have just stirred up the hornet’s nest. Last year in Denver, Tebow started most of the season after a sluggish start by Kyle Orton, and because he was demanded by the fans. He went on to win eight games in a row using some impressive fourth quarter heroics. Unfortunately for young Timmy, his head coach John Fox, and former Bronco quarterback John Elway, never came around. During the off season, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets just after Denver acquired Peyton Manning. So, was this a good move for New York? In a place where fans are simply unforgiving, as a head coach, wouldn’t you want as much stability as possible? Speaking from personal experience, I know head coaches want as much consistency as possible in every position, but even more so in a quarterback. There are too many variables for why a quarterback is on the high end quarterback list or why they fall on the low end quarterback list. The high end quarterbacks get more yards for their rating while the low end get less yards for their rating. The quarterback with the highest rating (Brett Favre at 109.5) scrounged up only 224.5 yards per game and the quarterback with the third highest rating (Eli Manning at 102.2) threw for 231.7 yards per game falling below the regression line. The yards those two quarterbacks is more yards than most on the list, but for their quarterback rating more yards should have been completed. After touchdowns, it has become customary to celebrate. These celebrations have become more tame over the years, thanks to Commissioner Roger Goodell and his anti-fun ways. Long gone are the days of using the pylon to play miniature golf or stashing a cell phone under the goal post and making a phone call. He strongly recommends that all pro athletes hire an agent or attorney to perform the tedious negotiations citing it is their money and their livelihood on the line. He compiled seven strategies to negotiating a contract that helps athletes maximize their salaries: (1) be careful of the incentive laden contract, (2) know exactly how much of the contract is deferred, (3) only the signing bonus is guaranteed, (4) attempt to get a large signing bonus, (5) front-load your salary, (6) get a roster bonus after the third contract year, and (7) put off guaranteed base-salary until the last years. His strategies seem to be common sense but the average professional athlete entering the professional ranks is only 20 years old and has had little to no college education. The foundation for many successful renegotiated contracts is the athlete’s past performance and the team’s “what have you done for me lately” attitude. This could mean they wont have the capital to spend for other positions meaning their team might be weaker. To stay within budget the Cowboys might be obligated to adjust certain areas.
