Facilitator Availability

I'm available from 10AM-10PM Eastern Standard Time on most days, but attempt to reserve Sunday morning for my family. During the week, I am online between the hours of 6-7AM EST and 7-10 PM EST and on Saturdays most of time between 10AM –10 PM. I am available through my email at all times and will return all inquires within 24 hours. If these times are not convenient for you, please let me know and I will be happy to accommodate your schedule if at all possible. I provide you with these times to make it easier to communicate with me, not to limit our contact and want you to know that, should you need to contact me outside these time frames, you should not hesitate to do so.

For emergencies, when you are not able to gain access to messages on the Online Learning System (OLS), please send a message to my personal email address. In the event a third party needs to contact me, please direct them to my contact information listed under” facilitator information.” No third party should use your login credentials to gain access to the classroom.

General Course Description

This course provides opportunities for the analysis and synthesis of the role of ethics in the organization. Emphasis is placed on the way ethics affect thinking, relationship development, policy formation, and professional conduct in the workplace. Students develop the skills to understand and integrate constructive ethics into practices that support the success of the employee and the organization.

Ethics as "Ground Rules of Behavior" • Examine the relationship between ethics and organizational performance. • Examine the nature of personal and group ground rules and values.

Individual/Personal Ethics • Compare the relationship between values and behavior at personal and professional levels. • Explain the relationship of each approach in ethical theory to business practice.

Group/Organizational Ethics • Identify the sources and development of group values. • Identify current ethics issues in management. • Examine the relationship between ground rule dynamics and the continuous improvement process.

Changing Ethics • Analyze the relationship between leadership and ethics. • Develop a system of inquiry in order to evaluate ethical behavior.

Applying Ethics • Evaluate problem resolutions and outcomes in work settings based on the use or misuse of ethics.

Participation

Participation is very important online. You will be expected to participate 4 days a week in several different discussions and to contribute at least 2 substantive discussion messages on each of those 4 days. This is a required part of your grade. This generally means the messages you send as replies to messages from your classmates and me. Individual discussion question responses will count as part of participation, but Learning Team discussion question responses will be scored separately. Participation will be counted only in the Main forum. Messages posted in the Individual Forums, Chat Forum, or in the Learning Team forums will not count towards your class participation score.

Please note that both quantity and quality are important considerations when it comes to participation. A message, which says simply, "I agree," for example, would not constitute participation because it does not add anything of substance to the discussion. A general rule of thumb for word counts of your message is 200-300 words.

Note: Posting your assignments and working in the Learning Team forums will satisfy attendance requirements. I will also post a thread for questions in the Main forum.

Expectations for Discussion Question Responses and Weekly Summaries

• You must post at least two DQs per week. • Discussion question responses should be at least 200-300 words.

Each week, there will be two Individual DQs. Individual DQ responses should be posted in the Main forum.
Please post responses to the threads provided. To respond, highlight the appropriate thread, click Reply, type your response, and send. Please do not start a new thread for the weekly discussion questions.

Unlike your formal written assignments, I do not require that your discussion question responses adhere to specific formatting requirements. However, please make sure to proofread carefully. Grammar and spelling errors may impact the grading.

I expect your discussion question responses to reflect critical thought. Whenever possible, please try to relate the course content to real-world applications from your work experience.

Learning Teams

University of Phoenix students are expected to work effectively in diverse groups and teams to achieve tasks. They must collaborate and function well in team settings as both leaders and followers. They should respect human diversity and behave in a tolerant manner toward colleagues and peers.

Several of the assignments in this class will be completed in Learning Teams of 3-5 students. I will set up these teams in Week 1. If you have any requests for teammates, please let me know on the first day of the class via private email.

If you experience difficulties working with your team, you are expected to resolve them within the team if possible. However, please feel free to contact me for guidance if you have concerns in this area.

In order to create structure for your Learning Team, you will complete a Learning Team Charter during Week 1. The form for this charter is available in the Course Materials Forum.

During the final week of the class, you will be asked to complete a "Peer Evaluation" to assess the contributions of each member of your Learning Team (including yourself). I will take these Peer Evaluations into account when assessing individual contributions to the Learning Team projects. The Peer Evaluation form and instructions for posting are included in a separate message in the Course Materials Forum.

Because Learning Team projects are outcome-based, all members of your Learning Team will generally earn the same grade for Learning Team projects. However, I reserve the right to report different grades for different Learning Team members if I see a substantial imbalance in individual contribution.

Learning Teams should provide a brief summary of any communication held outside the forum. If you hold conference calls, work in a real-time chat room, or in any other way get together outside the OLS (Online Learning System) environment, please post a log, transcript, or summary in the Learning Team forum. Further, please do not resort to using any of these supplementary communication tools unless everyone on your Learning Team agrees to the method and to the schedule. Should you have any questions about this, don't hesitate to ask me.

Late Assignments

Late assignments will be penalized with a 5% grade deduction for each day late unless you have made prior arrangements with me. Deadlines will be defined as 11:59 Arizona Time. If you know you will be offline the day an assignment is due, please make sure to post it early. Any time you feel you might be falling behind in the course, it's best to contact me to discuss your situation. As noted in the first message posted in the Main Forum, no assignments can be accepted after the final day of class.

These decisions many time can cause ethical dilemmas, make a person decide what is right or wrong, and can make a significant difference in people’s lives. Ethical decisions have become a very important part of the professional workplace and also in an individual’s personal development and how they decide what to do in everyday life. For most individuals ethical decision making is a process that is started when you are young and is at time developed through a series of right and wrong decisions, a process of learning on the go. There are many people that are involved in the teaching of ethics, a person’s parents, life experiences, and professional training. There is also an ethical system that affects how people learn ethics; relativistic would be the system that I personally would follow. The ethical decisions that are made will affect personal performance and potentially the future path that is taken; this will be personally and in the workplace. Ethics is concerned with distinguishing between good and evil in the world, between right and wrong human actions, and between virtuous and novirtuous characteristics of people ("Eth-Ics", 2014). Ethical development begins when a person is young and learns what they can and cannot do by their parents (guardians) and the parent’s (guardians) social groups. This is where I was taught that one must act honesty and, responsible for one-self, respect one-self and others, loyalty to family, friends, and to one’s society, open-minded, and fairness. Each of these ethics work together and/or tempered in order to understand what is happening around us.   Each has a define set of criteria that we use to evaluate each situation at hand. Are we dishonest if we hold back information to avoiding hurting another person? Do we hold back information to avoid conflict that may lead to violence?   Does one ethical thought outweigh or override another? How do we handle conflict within our own ethical principles or values? In the development of one's ethical persona, it is possible that ethical decisions will be based on whether the proposed action, which is morally right, leads to the greatest ratio of benefits compared to costs. ...Ethical Issue in Business PHL/323 November 11, 2012 Role of Organizational Leadership After reading the article about Mr. Lopes bad behavior I’d say it’s a good thing that Mr. Silver silenced him and took away his title as chairman of the Assembly’s Housing Committee. His staff also has been reduce and barred from employing anyone the age of 21. All though Mr. Silver has put an age limit on who can work in the same office as Mr. Lopez, it has not been released the ages of the women that were mishandled or sexually assaulted. Mr. Silver is the Assembly speaker and he also deals with mishandling sexual misconduct claims against lawmakers so he had handled these types of issues in the past. Mr. Lopez hasn’t made any comments, but his layer Gerald B. Lefcourt, said Mr. Lopez denied the claims, and criticized the Assembly’s investigation of the complaints as “a lawless enterprise.” “This was entirely without due process — there were no witnesses, no cross-examination, no hearing,” he said. He added, “It’s beyond any notion of American legal proceeding.” (Hakim, 2012 ) Anytime sexual misconduct comes up within any business or government it is handles seriously and is “nipped in the bud”. So it can’t continue and so the women or men in any situation feel safe to return to work. Which is there right and it should be taken away from them.
