Solve a Problem
PHL/458
September 5, 2013

Solve a Problem Challenges are all around us. Sometimes we face easy challenges and other times we face difficult challenges. In order to solve a problem, regardless of its level of difficulty, one must think critically and creatively in order to develop a satisfactory solution. As we try to solve the problems of our daily lives, it is important to examine any and all ideas. From the most mundane to the most radical, it is a healthy activity to express all ideas and do the filtering later. This paper will attempt to discuss and solve a problem I have some personal experience with. “It is one thing to have thinking skills and quite another to use them in everyday situations” (Ruggiero, 2009, p. 112). This situation definitely challenged the thinking skills my team and I had available. I served on active duty in the United States Navy for almost eight years. To say that we were regularly presented with challenges would be a dramatic understatement. It never really seemed to be more challenging then when we were off the coast of Iraq in 2003. I was the manager of all the communications systems aboard the ship. This system played a key role in all ship’s communications but most importantly during this war, our GPS guided-missile waypoints were mission critical. Three hours prior to a missile launch, the mainframe Tomahawk system used to handle this communication stopped functioning properly. It was one in the morning. I was not the main technician on this equipment but I would ultimately be held responsible for its success or failure. Notifying the upper chain of command that the equipment was not functioning was not necessary. Within ten minutes, the entire ship’s crew was aware of the problem. Explaining what I thought the issue was after discussing the problem with the technician was also quite the

...Week 2: Solve a Problem Exercise PHL/458 May 8, 2013 University of Phoenix Challenges sometimes present themselves in ways that require no in depth thought to determine they are present. Often times they will materialize in the shape of an obvious issue or problem. Challenges are not always presented in this way; they may offer a chance to improve a current situation. Thinking creatively is planning for the best and preparing for the worst; to constantly seek out new solutions. Determine the optimum method for stating the problem. You should state every solution from every angle to eliminate the complex from the simpler. Choosing the right solution is the most complicated part of this course, and you may find it more beneficial to determine which solution provides the best outcome after we reviewed more facts and suggestions offered. Ensure to collect and analyze all information to deal with the issue or problem at hand. Appropriate investigative ways incorporate thinking about experiences, obtaining any related information through recently experience, securing interviews with persons knowledgeable on the subject matter. Acquiring any information to help formulate a solution will only benefit you throughout the process. “Every time you address a problem and try to find solutions, stretch your mind a little, reach for thoughts a little more daring than you have entertained before Vincent (2009).” Brainstorming the problem allows you to offer up as many solutions...

...changes or request, etc. This list really goes on! This is where I am happy to give the form out as long as I have them, because I understand that point. However I have several fellow officers who will tell them “I don’t have any request forms!” Even if they have a stack of them sitting within arm’s reach. I believe this is wrong. I feel that though the inmates made poor decision that landed them in my care and custody, they are still human beings, and should be treated as such, therefore if they need a request form they should be given one. # 2) What do you do when you face conflicting work or family obligations? How might critical and creative thinking assist in prioritization of obligations? Although I always try to put my family first and foremost it has been a little difficult lately. Since leaving my Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm job, that I was at 4 and a half years, to take a swing shift position working everyday 2 pm to 10 pm except...

Process

...Creative Process Michael May PHL/458 June 5, 2013 John Smith Creative Process The creative process is one that people use every day, (Passive voice – suggest “People use the creative process every day, “) whether they realize it or not. The creative process includes four stages: searching for challenges, expressing the problem or issue, investigating the problem or issue, and then producing ideas (Ruggiero, V. R. (2009). (Repeated error – do not include author initials or first names with in-text citations – use “(Ruggiero, 2009)”. In personal experience, I have noticed that I used the creative process while trying to improve conditions at the various places in which I was (word tense – use “have been”) employed. A big thing at Gateway Cold Storage was that the pick path, or the way in which products were arranged on the warehouse floor was not conducive in creating a path that was conducive to generating speed and getting more items loaded in a more efficient manner. (some informal language, vague pronouns, missing commas, and passive voice – try “At Gateway Cold Storage, the pick path, or how products are arranged on the warehouse floor, was not conductive. A quicker and more efficient system for loading items was needed.”) Searching for challenges would be to (passive voice – try “involves”) going out and looking for ways to improve the way you live life. The book states that the first stage of the creative process represents the habit of searching for challenges...

Refining Ideas

...Refining ideas PHL/458 University of Phoenix Refining ideas When refining ideas, there are three steps to follow to produce a viable solution. The first step is to work out the details by determining exactly how a solution will be applied. The second step is to examine those details for imperfections and the third step is to make improvements that will eliminate imperfections (Ruggiero, 2009). The original issue seen on week two was a computer malfunction. The problem with this is that it prevents me from completing my work on time. Many possible reasons are possible for the malfunction: it can be overload, an out- of- date computer or a person deleted vital programs in error causing the malfunction. Some initial solutions: can be to consult with the competition, Google the challenge presented and follow instructions on how to fix problem, change computers every week to a new one, completely abolish deadlines and anticipate computer damage before it happens by auto-testing the computer every 15 minutes for potential malfunctions. While doing a critical examination of best solution, these questions are to be addressed and answered: What exactly is to be done? The answer is to anticipate computer damage. How is it to be done? A device that alerts the user that a computer malfunction is imminent, the user can immediately click on a defense software to rescue or fix the malfunction before the...

Solve a Problem

...Solve a Problem PHL/458 Rebekah Armstrong University of Phoenix Aleyda Cardenas February 17, 2014 Solve a Problem Creative thinkers have a generalized set of character traits used within the creative thinking process to assist with finding the best resolution to the challenge faced that consist of originality, use of imagination, and effectiveness. Through each of the four stages of creative thinking, thinkers continuously find challenges and multiple ideas that create solutions for these challenges. Determining what the most effective solution to the challenge is may take a varied amount of time but because creative thinkers are so dedicated, they will keep striving to meet their goal. The personal challenge search effectively demonstrated all areas of the creative thinking process from beginning to end. Creative thinking is not just an art form; it is a process that requires hard-work and dedication from independent individuals who strive to find the best possible solution to a challenge. Creative Thinking Process The creative thinking process consists of four steps which break down the different essential areas that cover all aspects of the process, from beginning to end. Creative thinkers have character traits of boldness, resourcefulness, independence, are generally dedicated hard workers. Each step of the creative thinking process is routine for creative thinkers because they know until one step is completed the next cannot commence. Step 1 Many...

Phl/458 Week 3 Visual Organizer

...Tuning a Duck Call – Graphic Organizer PHL/458 Introduction: This graphic organizer breaks down a problem looked in week #2. I had been having trouble with duck calling and found out that they were out of tune, so I had to go about researching and tuning the calls. This graphic organizer starts with the Original Issue and goes through problem solving methods and ends up with a Final Solution. Key facts: After much research, I was able to come to these final conclusions and instructions by following the creative thinking process for tuning a call. At the end of the day, I was surprised to find out that it is my personal preference and air pressure I put into the call that makes it work. This will help each person learn their own air pressure, and give you the benefit of strengthening your knowledge on how a call works.  There are two main parts of the call, the insert and barrel. The barrel is the top of the call. It is usually outfitted with a brass or aluminum band.  The insert is the piece that your hand is placed on while blowing the call. It slides into the barrel of the call. Once disassembled, you will notice the tone board has thin white sheets on it, known as reeds. These are the "tongue" of the duck call, and we will further discuss these later on. The reed lies on the tone board where the cork or wedge holds the reed in place. This is referred to as the cork slot.  Different people tune calls for different reasons. Some may have a cracked reed, or...
