My dad was born on Christmas Eve, 1969, to Harry and Valerie Piper. For about seven years, they lived together happily in Long Lake, Minnesota. Everything changed when he entered first grade. His parents divorced, and while his dad stayed in Minnesota, his mom moved to Chatham, Massachusetts, taking him with her. As part of the divorce terms, he only got to see his dad for a few weeks each summer, spending the vast majority of his time on Cape Cod with his mom. This was a situation that was not exactly ideal for a great childhood. His mother was a heavy smoker and drinker, which led to an unhealthy home situation. The house was usually filled with secondhand smoke, and she did not always provide the best care for my dad. Since she bred Hungarian Vizslas, there were at least eight dogs in the house at all times. This caused the already cramped house to be almost unbearable. To deal with this, my Dad often escaped into books. He would go to the library and check out twelve books at a time. Dog breeders don’t make a lot of money, so my dad and his mom lived on a shoestring budget. Sometimes to my dad, it seemed that she cared more about the dogs than she did about him. At a very young age he showed a passion for music and especially photography. This same passion was not seen in his basic school work though. By the time he graduated High School he only had a 67 average. This low score made it very hard for him to find a college to attend. So instead he moved on to become a freelance photography for the magazine Look. As a photographer he was able to travel a great deal, an experience that helped in opening his eyes to everything around him. It created a thirst for knowledge and the desire to learn more. This desire brought him to the doorsteps of Columbia University where he enrolled as a non-matriculating student. While attending Columbia he became even more influenced by photography, which turned into a growing passion for the understanding of the film process. Often times, he would sit in during classes taught by Lionel Trilling, Mark Van Doren and Moses Hadas (SK-TMF, 2008). All three men were considered some of the greatest minds and authors to have taught at Columbia, and thought to be Kubrick’s greatest influences. Changes in the global economy, technology, and race relations during the last 30 years have necessitated new and innovative analyses and policy responses. A common thread which weaves throughout many of the studies reviewed here is the dynamics of migration. In When Work Disappears, immigrants provide comparative data with which to highlight the problems of ghetto poverty affecting blacks. In No Shame in My Game, Puerto Rican and Dominican immigrants are part of the changing demographics in Harlem. In Canarsie, the possible migration of blacks into a working/middle-class neighborhood prompts conservative backlash from a traditionally liberal community. In Streetwise, the migration of yuppies as a result of gentrification, and the movement of nearby-ghetto blacks into these urban renewal sites also invoke fear of crime and neighborhood devaluation among the gentrifying community. Not only is migration a common thread, but the persistence of poverty, despite the current economic boom, is the cornerstone of all these works. Poverty, complicated by the dynamics of race in America, call for universalistic policy strategies, some of which are articulated in Poor Support and The War Against the Poor. Just as we traded in the pinstripes and monster bonuses of the Wall Street era for T-shirts and a piece of the action during the startup revolution, we're waiting to latch on to the new trappings of success.
