My Pitbull Attack I could remember this day as if it happened yesterday. It was the middle of spring I had just gotten off the school bus, my friends and I decided to walk down the street to the store for some candy before going home. Once we left out the store we all went our separate ways. When I made it home I took a shower and changed clothes, did my homework, and then did all my chores before I went back outside. Usually when I went outside I’d go directly to the neighbor’s house we lived next to them for years, over the years I became pretty close with their daughter. Unfortunately, no one was home so instead I played with the other neighborhood kids. Once I got bored with playing with them I had nothing else to do so I went back home. When I got in the house I noticed my cousin was there so we went back out to play on my swing set in the backyard. While we were back there the neighbor’s dogs were going crazy barking and growling at us. I really wasn’t scared because my neighbor always told me how they were good dogs and a couple of times when I was over I played with them. We stopped swinging to aggravate them even more, my mom always told me not to bother the dogs but me being young and hardheaded I was always bothering them. A couple days prior to this day I was spraying the dogs with water and one of them had gotten a loose luckily I was able to run in the house before it could get close to me. While we were bothering the dogs my mom yelled out the window for us to stop and to come back around front. As my cousin and I were walking back to the front of the house behind me all I heard was heavy breathing and the sounds of chains scraping against the sidewalk. My first instinct was to just stand still because I saw on TV that if you just stay really still and not move the dog won’t attack. All that went out the window as soon as they got closer we could of easily ran in the house since it was right there but no I ran down the street. I LIVED ON A DEAD END STREET! So we were stuck the only way to get back home we either had to run through someone’s driveway to the alley or turn around and face the dogs. I didn’t know what to do so I jumped on someone’s car. While I was up there I just knew I was safe, WRONG! As I was hitting one of the two dogs with my shoe the other ran off back home I’m guessing, so I was only left to defend myself from one dog. There were people outside but they were just as scared as I was to bother helping me. While I was hitting the dog with my shoe, he got a hold of it and pulled me off the car. At this point I was so terrified that I used the bathroom on myself. I tried to get up and run but he got a hold of my leg, he had the tightest grip on it I just knew he was going to rip my leg off. After a couple seconds which felt like hours the dog finally let go and let out the loudest and scariest howl I’d ever heard, someone finally came to my rescue by shooting the dog with a paintball gun. A couple men held the dog down while some people called the ambulance and the dog pound. I looked down at my leg and there was so much blood my leg looked so bad I thought I would have to get it amputated since I could hardly feel it. I started to go in and out of conscious but I was still able to hear and feel everything around me including my mom holding me and crying. Once the ambulance came they wrapped my leg as best as they could, gave me some pain medication and took me to the hospital. By the time we arrived I had already passed out. When I woke up the next day my parents, my grandma, and my neighbor was sitting on the room. Thankfully my injuries weren’t severe I had to get about 30 staples and I had a sprained ankle. Unfortunately for the dogs they had to be put to sleep and my neighbor received a fine. When I looked up at her I could see the hurt in her eyes because I knew she had the dogs for a very long time. I apologized to her and broke down crying because I felt like it was all my fault had I listened to my mom, the dogs would have still been alive and I wouldn’t had been temporarily handicapped. A couple months after the incident I was still feeling so bad about what happened so I used my money I’d been saying and got my neighbor a puppy. I would never forget that day I really thought I was about to lose my life or my leg. I am now deathly afraid of dogs. One thing I did learn throughout this whole situation was to always and I mean always listen to my mom whether I feel like she’s wrong or right.

...understand and they assume their out to attack. You may have certain opinions also on these types of dogs but you might just not understand their actions. They were originally farm dogs, used to pull stuck horses, cattle. They were used for hunting. Butchers thought it would make their meat taste better by letting a couple of dogs attack the bull (they thought it tenderized the meat). That soon became a form of entertainment, after Bull baiting was banned, thats when dog fighting began... These people would attach weights, make them over run on treadmills, swim across small ponds for hours trying to build muscle, they would give them steroids, they fed their dog gun powder, sharpen their teeth. cut their ears off... Some pit-bulls can be very aggressive and dangerous but it's not their fault. The reason they act that way is because the one main problem, bad owners. These bad owners abuse their dogs and have them chained up all day. They starve them and leave them with out food or water. They must not know what a dog really needs. If your just going to treat your dog badly what's the point of even having a special dog like that? All dogs are special but why does everyone pick on these certain dog types? What people don't know about these dogs is that they are really sweet. They are to busy acting afraid and judging them right away that they cant even take the time to know them. Me personally I have six dogs at this moment, all pits and all...

Cane Corso Managerial Analysis

...CANE COSO v. PIT BULL: Let’s Compare Some Traits I have to say, we’re obviously biased here toward cane corsos, but we do love pit bulls nonetheless. So, I wanted to address the subject that seems to come up frequently about “Which is a better guard dog?” My immediate answer, hands-down, ALWAYS is the cane corso. While pit bulls are fierce and highly aggressive toward other dogs, they seldom attack people. They are very sociable, and make good family pets, despite their bad reputation. We have owned several pit bulls, so this is speaking from experience. They are very good hunting dogs…pits LOVE to be worked. And I doubt you’d ever find a better Frisbee chaser than a pit bull. But when it comes to guarding your ASSets, **ahem** I have to go with the cane corso every time. Plus, they’re still under the radar in terms of where you can own one and drive around with one in your vehicle, which is a bonus if you’re into driving around with your dog riding shotgun. Pit bulls are quickly becoming outlawed in many regions, sadly because of false media representations and also because people just don’t seem to want to devote the amount of time required to train such an active-breed dog…I guess it all goes back to the saying that dumb people just shouldn’t own dogs, but it’s still a free country in that respect. Here’s a link to an article that picks apart each breed a little better than I think I could do: http://www.squidoo.com/pittbullsvcanecorso This article, by...

Is Aggression Truly Dangerous Dogs?

...For instance, the Chihuahua. They are another very common breed of dog in America, just not quite as big as the Pit Bull. Chihuahuas, like Pit Bulls, don't have a very good reputation with humans. Everyone knows that Chihuahuas are notorious for being feisty little things that like to bite. However, they are never mentioned in the news, similar to any of the breeds that are labeled as aggressive. Dogs that aren't labeled aggressive can also become aggressive when their owners treat them wrong. Unlike the bigger breeds for obvious reasons, people tend to do things such as carry the little dogs around in purses, dress them up in clothing and bows, and ultimately treat them like they are toys. Nonetheless, most of the time, small dogs are seen as loving little creatures that would never hurt a fly, but they can be just like the more aggressively labeled breeds in the way that with the wrong owner, they can become aggressive and attack. ¨Pet Pomeranian¨ states that in 2000 there was a case of a Pomeranian killing a 6-week old baby for supposedly no reason. There clearly had to have been something wrong for this dog to attack. This goes to show that, with the wrong ownership and training, even the dogs that aren't labeled aggressive can do some damage on other creatures, including humans. It may be unfortunate, but it is true and there are more pieces of evidence...

Pitbulls

...English 112 Leonard The Misunderstood Pit-bull The misconception of the pit-bull has always been controversial to most people. Most of the public refers to the breed as mean and vicious. It is unfair that they judge the breed based on rumors and hearsay rather than base it on hard facts. These rumors make it hard for current owners and potential owners to adopt or own this breed. The pit-bull has the same right to become a loving pet as any other animal does. The reason the breed is so disliked today is because of bad owners, bad experiences, or just rumors people have spewed out among the public. Most of the time, these breeds are linked to drug dealers or dog fighters. They use the breed to make them money by fighting, or for general protection. These bad owners are the ones that are responsible for the way people look at them today. Most of society’s bad experiences come from these types of pit-bulls. You can see it on the news most of the time. A child or a person in a bad neighborhood just happens to be walking through when a pit-bull attacks them. When this happens it is most likely a bad owner to be at fault, not the pit-bull.” Bad owners make bad pets,” (PBRC) and these specific situations are no different. “Identity, which is shaped by our own culture” (Latterell 9) is what has made the pit-bull into how people see the breed today. I can see why most people misunderstand the pit-bull and will not consider the breed to be a family pet...

Pitbull Discrimination

...Pit Bulls Dogs have been man’s best friend for hundreds of years. Pit bulls were considered “America’s Dog” for many years until people started to inherently misjudge them. Many of their characteristics that people are afraid of are made up and extremely incorrect, some are even impossible for any dog to possess. They are discriminated against without any basis other than skewed opinionated news stories and biased articles. Pit bulls are even an abundantly common household family pet, bought even for children. They are usually only aggressive when they have been raised by bad owners who abuse them, and they have even been proven to be less aggressive than many other dog breeds. Pit bulls are treated differently than other breeds; however, no dog should be discriminated against. There is a wonderful story of a heroic pitbull saving the life its loving owner. Lilly was a female pitbull who was owned by an elderly woman, whose name was Christine, to help her with her drinking problem. One day, Lilly and Christine were walking home from a friends’ house when Christine suddenly collapsed while crossing a set of railroad tracks. A train was coming towards her when the engineer finally saw her lying on the tracks. He frantically tried to slow the train but was unable to stop it completely and would have seriously injured killed her at the...

Labeling Dogs

...mother of Boston police officer David Lanteigne, was unconscious on train tracks in Shirley, MA. The engineer saw a dog, a pit bull named Lilly, trying to pull a woman off the tracks. After the train finally stopped and authorities arrived to find Lilly standing over her owner Christine. Lilly was taken and rushed to Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston. Lilly suffered from some injuries and some trauma to her leg, which eventually had to be amputated. She was rescued 3 years ago prior by her son and given to her to help with her struggle in alcoholism. Her son said, “We saved her life, and she saved my mom’s life” (Phillips). When these dogs become stereotyped as viscous there are so many testaments to show that they are misunderstood and they love their family just like any other breed. There are so many people that are not sure which way is the best way to address this situation. The problem is not the dogs; it is the owners of the dogs. Breed discrimination is not going to fix the problem. Can anyone say that one breed of dog will be aggressive when in all eyes any dog can be that way when they are provoked. All some dog’s need is to be trained and socialized with other dogs. A dog is like a person; how you treat a person is how that person is going to treat others. “The focus of public and government concern has not always been pit bulls; in the 1970s the concern was over German Shepherds, and in...

Breed Specific Legislation: the Flawed System

...have a pet dog (Weise, 2001). With this data in hand, would it be fair to say America loves its furry four legged friends? Somewhat. A topic that is picking up steam in America is Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), and it is starting to create unnecessary controversy. Attempting to remove specific breeds from entire communities based on fear, is unjust. We as a country need to start looking deeper into this issue and decide who the real culprit is: the animal or the owner. BSL is defined as a group of laws passed that regulate a certain breed’s ability to reside in a community. The breed catching the most heat currently is the pit bull. One of the issues with this is defining what a pit bull is. There are so many variances on what characteristics define these dogs. It has come down to any dog with a big head and a broad shoulder is in fact a pit bull. They are all profiled as aggressive, unpredictable, malicious animals. But, upon researching the history of these dogs in our country, you will find quite the opposite. They are of English decent, brought here by English immigrants. They were originally bred from Bulldogs and used as hunting dogs. In the early 1900’s, they were most known for being multi-purpose family dogs, with a reputation of protecting their family’s children (Kendrick, 2012). So, how did this entire breed turn bad? Breed specific legislation is typically considered in a community after the media gets a hold of an incident with a certain breed. The media...

Paper About Dangerous Dogs

...law of dangerous dogs because of the dog attack on a five-year-old girl, Ellie Lawrenson. From their point of view the law about dangerous dogs are unclear, outdated and it needs to be renovated. This change of law would not only intentionally target the dogs but more the owners of these dangerous dogs. The man behind this idea is Bernard Hogan-Howe, who reached the decision together with the chief constables. The Kennel Club is pushing for a reform of the dangerous dog law because of the confusion about the Dangerous Dogs Act. They do not want people to see dogs dangerous because of their breed, but based their actions. The Kennel Club’s spokeswoman made a state that “pit bulls have certain traits but in the hands of responsible owners they would not be a danger. The act hasn’t worked; it’s failed to prevent a significant number of attacks. “ Which the RSPCA spokesman agrees with the Kennel Club. Text 2: The text “Jail owners of killer dogs” by Victoria Stilwell, she is against breed-specific legislation, People should stop judging the dog immediately when something this terrible happens, it is not the dog’s fault, the owner should stand with the whole responsibility. The only thing it takes for people to see that, is just a little bit of sense. People make rational decisions like calling for bans on certain breeds, because they do not have any sense. She talks about how it is the owner’s fault that dog attacks happen. The owner should not let their...

...friend’ at least a few thousand times in our life time. When we say that, we are referring to the cutest most loyal animals of them all, the dog. For our group speech we decided that volunteering at a Pitbull shelter was just the right thing to do that fit us all perfectly. Saving Grace Pitbull Rescue has a history of helping dogs, what we did there was very influential and what they do for all those dogs is truly amazing. To start off with the breed “Pitbull” has a very bad reputation anywhere that they go. In the 1980s, the breed began to develop a terrible reputation. It's not clear where the cycle started, but at some point, Pit bulls became the dog breed of choice for the criminal element, or those looking for dogs to threaten, guard, intimidate and generally look scary. This led to many owners abusing their Pit bulls into becoming vicious, mean attack dogs (mom.me, 2014). One thing that I found that was very true was this quote from Cesar Millan, “Aggression is not a breed thing. It's a state of mind, and it comes from how the human is with the dog. There are four levels of energy, regardless of the breed: low, medium, high, very high. The idea is to get a dog in your same level or lower than you (BrainyQuote.com, 2015)”. In the next few moments you will learn the history of saving grace from Jonas, what we did such as the services we provided from Danny, and finally what they do, that being the services that they provide from Jamie. Conclusion: When you hear all the...

The Truth About Pitbulls

...The Truth about Pitbulls Ryan K. Smith University of Phoenix The Pit Bull breed of dog has a very bad reputation. This is because Pit Bulls are used as fighting dogs for some people’s amusement. Little do people know Pit Bulls are very good family dogs, and often called “The Nanny Dog”. I personally own three Pit Bulls, and have interviewed someone who does not own a pit bull. I have found a lot of information about this breed of dogs and everything points to one question. Although some individuals perceive pit bull dogs to have a bad reputation, many have found these animals to be wonderful house pets when treated with kindness and love. The stereotype of a pit bull is not good at all, but why does this stop people from owning them? I asked a non pitbull owner why she will not own a pitbull. “I personally got bit by a pit bull, so I have seen what they are capable of and this scares me. These dogs have a very powerful jaw and it makes being bit worse. I’m just personally scared of this breed of dog. Being scared of this breed of dog because of being bit by one, makes me weary of going to other people’s homes that own this breed because I’m scared of being bit again.” (Cassie Bailey’s personal interview). I also interviewed a pitbull owner as well. “By owning the pit bull breed for most of my life I have never had a problem out of any of the dogs I have had. The pit bull breed has a bad name, but my dogs have never bit or attacked anyone. My dogs are very...

...| Pit Bulls | Mean or Misunderstood | Andre L Bourgeois 8/27/2011 Instructor: Ms Nancy Hill | Andre Bourgeois GE 117-M6 August 20, 2011 Pit Bulls: Mean or Misunderstood? By Andre Bourgeois Thesis: There is no other dog that conjures up fear and terror by the mere mention of their name as the pit bull. American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) aka Pit Bull brings fear to people because of the amount of human fatalities these dogs are supposedly involved in. The media would have you believe that these deaths are on the rise and is of epidemic proportions with the pit bull being the main perpetrator. An urban legend is that they have Locking jaws and have a super strength bite force. Another myth is that they are aggressive towards people, and go insane. Most people don’t realize is that the term “Pitt bull” is not a breed of dog; it is a group of a certain type of dog. The origin of this breed doesn’t help their reputation. The APBT was bred specifically for the purpose of being the ultimate fighting dog. The breed needed to be quick, agile, strong, determined, aggressive, and able to withstand pain and have a lot of game (to never give up under any situations). What is not known about the APBT is that they were bred NOT to be aggressive toward people. That was one trait that was bred into them, non aggressive towards people. The breeders needed that trait because when breaking up dog fights they didn’t want...

Persuasive Speech On Pitbulls

...Why are pit bulls a good pet to adopt? Some are saying they are and others are saying they are not. Unfortunately, people are making negative comments about pit bulls, but they are good pets to have or adopt. The fact about pit bulls is that pit bulls are one of the misunderstood dog breeds in the world. Another fact is pit bull puppies are adorable. The myths about them are: they do not have locking jaws and they are not all inherently vicious. Pit bulls are not aggressive towards other dogs and they are not aggressive towards humans. Pit bulls that have an unknown history and parentage from rescue or shelter are not dangerous to adopt, rather than buying a pit bull from a breeder . The last myth is that: it is not better to adopt a pit bull puppy instead of an adult. There is a little history to pit...
