...The term “plagiarize” as defined by the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary (2011) is, “to steal and pass off the ideas or words of another as one's own: use another's production without crediting the source.” Why do students plagiarize? Plagiarism occurs when an individual does not have knowledge of the subject, lack of knowledge of the American Psychological Association (APA) writing guidelines, procrastination, which does not allow the individual to spend the time needed to research the topic. The guidelines of the American Psychological Association should be followed. Some students plagiarize because they think that it is not necessary to place citations throughout the written work text, but only on the reference page. This occurs when the individual is unfamiliar with the APA guidelines. Lack of knowledge of the subject due to students procrastinating. Procrastination does not allow for the student to thoroughly research the subject to ensure that the ideas are solely his or her own. Procrastination can cause a student to plagiarize by copying and pasting the information that is found. This practice can also cause a student to purchase the work of others from different sources. Intentional versus Unintentional Plagiarism Intentional plagiarism occurs when an individual knowingly uses the work of another as his or her own. A common form of intentional plagiarism is copying and pasting from multiple sources to construct a source and not giving the authors credit...

...Plagiarism Name: Institution: Course: Tutor: Date: Plagiarism 1. Would you consider purchasing a paper from a website and submitting it as your own? I would not purchase a paper from a website and hand it in as my own because of my knowledge of plagiarism and its consequences. Plagiarism is the easy way out and teaches nothing. When things get tough in the real world or on the job these kind of ethics will not work. Furthermore, my pride would not let me take pride in another person's work. Moreover, today the technology has become so advanced that professors can double check all work through anti-plagiarism websites (Turabian, 2007). I would not want to risk my work being penalized or dismissed completely from being graded because I was too lazy to try. 2.Do you agree with the website owner who said posting term papers is improving education by forcing professors to create more challenging assignments? Justify your answer. I don't agree with this statement. The website owner is just looking for away to justify selling other peoples work for profit. By avoiding conventional questions for assignments, whose material is often available on the Internet, teachers and professors only make the lives of their students difficult by resorting to mind-blowing assignments. Sometimes professors assign topics that I believe are ridiculous in choice and if anything it keeps students from performing their best. The posting of the term papers is not totally wrong in itself...

...Kaavya Viswanathan was offered a two book deal with Alloy and a one movie deal with DreamWorks worth $500,000 and in 2006 Kaavya Viswanathan wrote and released a book titled “How Opal Mehta Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life”. A few weeks after it was released by Alloy it was discovered that she plagiarized several different authors. A few of the authors that she took portions of her work from and the books that they were from are Megan F. McCafferty “Sloppy First”, “Second Helpings”, Toni Morrison “The Bluest Eye” and Tanuja Desai Hidier “Born Confused” (Zhou, 2006) (Dave, 2006). After the plagiarism was discovered her books were taken off the shelves and she lost the contract for the movie. At the time this took place Kaavya Viswanathan was a student at Harvard University, the academic board met to go over the case and they determined that because it was not academic plagiarism that she would not be punished by the school, however she did take a leave of absence from school until all aspects of the case was settled (Dave, 2006). Plagiarism is when someone copies another’s work verbatim and puts their name on it taking full ownership of the work (iParadigms, LLC, 2013). Paraphrasing is also considered to be plagiarism if it is not cited giving credit to the original author of the work. There are a couple ways that someone could mistakenly plagiarize their work. The first is if the person does not know when or how to cite the source from where they got the words from whether it...

Plagarism

...Plagiarism Carla Everhart Franklin University Plagiarism I consider myself a thrifty person. That’s a good thing, right? I’m careful with my money, use my time wisely. Sometimes that means coping ideas, dissecting to duplicate, wearing second hand, and recycling discard. Basically, very little in my life is original. So tasked with defining plagiarism I did what I do best – I surveyed others. I asked thirteen of my co-workers to give me their definition of plagiarism in one word. Of those surveyed; 40% responded copying, 40% responded cheating, and 20% defined plagiarism as stealing, fraud, or theft. All the answers pooled are correct but plagiarism goes beyond willful intention. Unintentionally taking someone else’s material and representing it as your own is also considered plagiarism. Franklin University’s Academic Bulletin (2012-2013) categorizes plagiarism as “academic dishonesty” (p18). Sure plagiarism may not be a crime that will put you behind bars but academic dishonesty can carry heavy penalties. Also defined in Franklin’s bulletin, if someone is found guilty of plagiarism they can face a failing grade, a recorded incident on their academic record, and dismissal (p18-19) depending on the severity and occurrences. Thankfully, despite Franklin’s strict attitude towards plagiarism the college does offer resources to help their students. One tool is “TURNITIN.com.”. TURNITIN.com unearths duplicate material in a paper. This website offers...

...PLAGIARISM & THE ESSAY Plagiarism is a serious academic offense, one which is far too prevalent in today’s academic environment. The penalties range from failing a class to expulsion from school. At The Paper Experts, plagiarism can result in loss of pay for a paper or dismissal from the company’s pool of writers. Nevertheless, many writers have discovered that internet-based sources have made it easy to “cut and paste” material into their own work, and too often they fail to properly document this material, resulting in plagiarism. Often this occurs accidentally through carelessness or mistakes. The key to understanding how plagiarism happens and how to avoid it is to understand the philosophy of writing and what makes an academic paper an essay. What is an Essay? Because academic essays involve using other people’s research, ideas, and opinions to support and defend the writer’s own thesis, many writers believe an essay simply assembles these outside sources. Too often, papers read like a series of quotations glued together with transition words like “additionally” or “in contrast.” This is not a real essay. This mistaken idea about what an essay is makes it easy to plagiarize because the writer is doing very little thinking or writing by him- or herself. A true academic essay develops a strong thesis statement in its introduction and spends the rest of the essay supporting and defending that thesis, both through the use of facts, ideas, and information from outside sources...

...We all know stealing is wrong. Be it candy from a store or money from someone’s pension fund, stealing is stealing. Plagiarism is no different. By plagiarizing you are stealing someone’s thoughts, words or ideas. It is a crime in my opinion more reprehensible than most. You have stolen the essence of someone else’s hard work, the brainchild of their very conscious thought and that which gives credence to their own intellect. Not only is it morally wrong, it is also academically wrong. It goes against Penn States core principal of academic integrity. Without integrity your word and reputation will suffer and will likely follow you throughout both your academic and professional career. You will have lost the truth of your instructors and classmates as well as cast a shadow of doubt in regards to all further work you submit. With such a heinous, act the punishment if caught is strict and severe, ranging from a warning, to failure of the course. A simple way to remember when to cite, is to acknowledge anytime you use or incorporate any information that is not your own. It can be in the form of ideas, images or quotes. A safe and smart way to think is, “When in doubt, cite”. Unless you can be absolutely sure that what you are using is common knowledge, always err on the side of caution and give credit where credit is due. In addition to careful citing, there are many resources that will help with citing and even with the proper format when writing your bibliography, giving even...

...Abstract I will be drafting a paper discussing the following points: 1. The importance of giving credit for the works that are not your own. 2. What elements of writing need to be addressed to ensure academic honesty? 3. The importance of telling the reader where your information is from when you paraphrasing or quoting someone else. 4. The support that a tutor, editor, or proofreader can bring to the process. 5. A conclusion that reflects your perspective after completing the assignment. Avoiding Unintentional Plagiarism After reading the article by R.L. Foster avoiding unintentional plagiarism, I will be discussing the issues of paraphrasing and plagiarism. It is important to avoid plagiarism because it is important to give credit to the original authors, people who show academic honesty are trusted by their peers and professors, and people who make the effort to avoid plagiarism gain writing skills. R.L. Foster says the “following are the three common pitfalls.” 1. Inadequately Citing Original Work Because It Would Require Multiple Citations. This is when several sentences are needed to describe another’s ideas; it seem redundant to place a citation after each sentence, so there are times that a writer will sometimes reference selected ideas and not others 2. Paraphrasing to Avoid Quotation Marks. Foster says “paraphrasing means rephrasing original work such that the ideas are intact but the phrasing is completely different.” Foster also...

Curing Plagarism

...Curing Plagiarism Academic dishonesty is spreading like an epidemic across colleges and universities. Its symptoms range from copying a friend’s homework to looking at another student’s answers during a test to turning in a term paper that is plagiarized. Plagiarism, which is taking credit for someone else’s words or ideas, in particular has increased at an alarming rate. Schools and colleges seek to understand not only the causes for rampant plagiarism but also ways to treat it more effectively. The remedy lies in cooperation between instructors, administrators, and students: instructors should improve how they teach academic honesty, administrators should revise and publicize policies treating academic misconduct, and students should value ethics over grades. Statistics show a tremendous increase in academic dishonesty across the nation. According to a study conducted by Plagiarism.org 58.3 percent of high school students in 1969 allowed others to copy their work. In 1989, about 97.3 percent allowed their work to be copied by other students. Even more students today are copying homework answers and cheating on tests to maintain high grades. There are many causes of plagiarism. One reason is the pressure on students to achieve, varying from maintaining a high GPA in high school to get into a good college to keeping up grades while in college to hold on to scholarships (Durkin). A second reason is the competitive nature of grading: a student must be not just acceptable but...

Avoiding Plagarism

...How to Avoid Plagiarism Trent R. Hartzler Heartland Community College Abstract Plagiarism is a common problem in high schools, universities, and everyday life. The object of this paper is to help students of all ages understand how to avoid accidental plagiarism. The biggest mistake that students make when writing a paper, is taking information that isn’t their own, using it in a non-credible way in their paper. Most students don’t understand the proper way to cite information within their paper. This idea is called proper attribution. The original maker of the quote or idea you are using deserves to be credited within your own work. Although a student may be paraphrasing, this does not mean a source doesn’t have to be credited. To avoid accidental plagiarism, a student must understand how to properly site credible information. To better understand how to properly site information, use the purdue owl on the internet to show how to site sources. It gives thorough examples of all different types of citations. Another way to avoid accidental plagiarism is to put your paper into a plagiarism checker such as grammarly. Grammarly is a website designed to have papers uploaded to check for plagiarism. Students can easily upload their paper, and grammarly is synced with a web database of information to check for any types of plagiarism. Using these two methods will help decrease the percentage of plagiarism tremendously. Plagiarism is a huge problem in today’s society. The more...

...Some Insight on Plagiarism in Higher Education Amy Joyner Liberty University Evering, L., & Moorman, G. (2012). Rethinking plagiarism in the digital age. Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, 56(1), 35-44. The article written by Evering & Moorman, 2012, is an article about the complexity and issues that evolve around plagiarism. Plagiarism as we see it today is clearly an issue of concern as far as why people do it and what can be done to avoid it. Plagiarism is not just an issue but clearly a serious and ongoing problem in the world today that needs to be put under control. According to Evering & Moorman, 2012, “Most public and private schools, colleges, and universities have academic integrity or honor codes and consequences for plagiarism, but few professors and teachers explicitly address what plagiarism means or provide examples of individual contexts and degrees of unauthorized copying”. Plagiarism is considered a serious issue that needs to be re-exam as far as Evering & Moorman are concern because it is said that not many students understand what plagiarism is let along trying to prevent it. Although several schools have honor codes about plagiarism and the penalties you can get, it’s still not a discussion with students about what it is and how to avoid it. The article states that “students are seldom engaged in instruction or discussion about what plagiarism is, why it is a problem, and how it can be avoided” (Evering & Moorman, 2012)...

It is swork undertaken on a systematis basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge. Research is a key aspect of journalism and as researchers we employ various sourdes and methods of research. Throughout this essay I will explore and examine the different sources available to journalists, the different types of interviews and I will describe the need for appropriate referencing of all source of material. Sources available. We live in an age overflowing with source materials, and these sources are easily accessible to us. The two main types of sources are primary and secondary sources. A pimary source is information that is gathered from an original source. These include; intervies, questionairres, surveys, observation, histoical documents and experiments to name but a few. A secondary source is information that has already been gathered by other people and/or organisations. A secondary source interpets and analyzes primary sources.
