The Early Morning Learning Center at Gateway consisted of nineteen children ranging from ages 3 to 5 years old. The center had five adult workers whose job it was to watch and help the children. The days I observed the children were either in the classroom or on the playground. The student I chose to observe was an Africana American by the name of Jerome. The playground was in fairly good condition with the equipment looking undamaged, and the restroom facilities were looked as though they were cleaned regularly. When I arrived, four children were running around on the field playing with each other. The children had visible age differences; the younger two looked between 5 and 6, while the older two looked between 8 and 9. The children were accompanied by two adults who sat on a bench half watching, half talking. The children seemed to be playing some type of game, in which the two older children clearly had authority over the younger ones. This shows how age differences impacts the children play process; the older ones being more domineering in development sought out to create this fun environment, and the younger ones not as creative just following along. It also shows how the community structure influences the children’s play; they were being resourceful by using the open field to their advantage by creating a fun environment. Now, instead of monkey bars, jungle gyms, and slides, the kids play on safety first playgrounds with tire shreds and wood chips with smaller outdoor equipment. In John Tierney’s article, “Can a Playground Be Too Safe?” he demonstrates that kids need old-fashioned playgrounds where risks occur. If children are allowed to take risks, they will gain courage, confidence, and character.
