Within an organization, group, or team there are two categories of polarities that can be identified. Affective polarity refers to the interpersonal struggle based on the informal characteristics among the group or team members and substantive polarity refers to the intellectual struggle based on task-oriented opposition. (van Engelen, Kiewiet, & Terlouw, 2001, p. 50) Polarities are normally viewed negatively because they hamper the progress of work within a team, group, and organization and many believe they should be avoided or immediately resolved. The dilemma of the choice between these two is inherently present in the nature of the two extremes i.e. either of the choices will make you fall at the opposing ends of the human emotional spectrum. It is interesting to note that the question of choosing between the two extremes is not a new one . Tracing this conundrum back to the sixteenth century takes us to the writings of Machiavelli. His political philosophy in 'The Prince' acknowledges the best leaders to command both fear and love. Having said that, Machiavelli recognizes the opposite polarity of the two emotions and maintains that since it is difficult to combine both in one person, it is better to be feared as a leader than to be loved (Machiavelli, 2003, p.53). Upon closer scrutiny, when real thinking and inquiry is applied to this revisionist text, we must first discard all the usual signposts that we have been "taught" to view history through and within. One of these signposts that we take as "normal," but is really just another revisionist trick of the magicians and spin-doctors, is the linear nature of history and of time itself. Time is not linear, it is spherical and holographic. History, therefore, is not linear, and the revised editions are not only written forward towards a pre-determined destination, it is also written backwards, revised from the back end, starting from the pre-determined conclusion and being filled in accordingly all the way to the beginning. The real question we must then ask is why and how did the spin-doctors know the destination in the first place from which to spin their tale both forwards and backwards? The answer is quite simple, and when considered objectively and without the mind-set of the spin, is painfully obvious. The answer is simply that the destination was inherent in the inception. ...5 Four General Strategies for Changing Human Systems ROBERT E. QUINN SCOTT SONENSHEIN I n this chapter we articulate a new general strategy for effecting change in human systems. To do this, we return to the fundamental assumptions of organization development (OD). In examining the early arguments in the field, we identify an essential strategy that has never been made explicit. By developing this strategy, we open avenues for research and provide an action framework that will increase the effectiveness of change agents. FOUNDATIONS OF OD We begin with a review of the seminal paper published in 1969 by Chin and Benne, “General Strategies for Effecting Changes in Human Systems.” In the paper, Chin and Benne outline three general strategies for changing human systems: empirical–rational, power–coercive, and normative–reeducative. The empirical–rational strategy considers people to be rationally self-interested. An organization member adopts a proposed change if the following two conditions are met: The proposed change is rationally justified, and the change agent demonstrates the benefits of the change to the change target. In short, the rational–empirical approach emphasizes that if the target has a justifiable reason to change (i.e., if it is in his or her self-interest), change comes from simply telling the target about the change. Abstract This study attempted to investigate the effect of training EFL college students in reading computerized texts on their reading speed and content comprehension. The study had a pre-post control group design. Thirty EFL students at the community college in Bisha, king Khalid university, Saudi Arabia, participated in this study. An online speed reading test was used to measure students' speed reading rate and content comprehension. Experimentation lasted eight weeks; three 50-minute sessions per week. A “t” test for small samples was used to analyze the difference between means of scores of the study subjects in the pre-post-measurements. Findings revealed a significant improvement in the experimental group students' speed reading rates and their reading comprehension of computerized texts.
