HCS/455 Health Care Policy: The Past And The Future
December 6, 2010
Stephen T. Gregoire

Policy Topic Search and Selection The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into law on March 23rd, 2010. This law enacts several measures that change the heart of the health care system here in the U.S. This new law encompasses different aspects of the health care industry and will take effect over the next four years. Some provisions of this act are as follows:
It makes insurance more affordable by providing the largest middle class tax cut for health care in history

It sets up a new competitive health insurance market giving tens of millions of Americans the exact same insurance choices that members of Congress will have.

Reducing premium costs for tens of millions of families and small business owners who are priced out of coverage today.

It will end discrimination against Americans with pre-existing conditions.

It puts our budget and economy on a more stable path by reducing the deficit by $100 billion over the next ten years – and about $1 trillion over the second decade

Closing the Medicare prescription drug “donut hole” coverage gap

Strengthening the provisions to fight fraud, waste, and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid

Coverage to children under 26 on their parents’ policies

Individuals would be required to purchase coverage or face a fine

Companies with more than 50 employees would be required to pay a fee of $2,000 per worker if the company does not provide coverage and any of that company's workers receives federal health care subsidies

Illegal immigrants would not be allowed to buy health insurance in the health insurance exchanges (Office of the President, n.d.)

With the signing of this milestone marks a major overhaul for health care and adds legislation

Polices in healthcare are necessary, to achieve a common goal of the organization at the same time keeping patients and healthcare providers safe. Policies around HIV/AIDS are important due to the nature of the illness and disease. There are many stakeholders in healthcare that can be affected by polices surround HIV/AIDS such as patients and caregivers. According to, "What Is HIV?" (n.d.),”The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system.” HIV is passed from one individual to another through bodily fluids such as semen and blood. This can be passed from patient to caregiver if there are not policies in place for prevention, an example would be a nurse not recapping a needle after providing a patient with an injection. This would be a policy that every institution has to avoid a nurse getting an unnecessary needle stick. Another example would be a policy on contaminated items in an healthcare organization. Most institutions require using the bio hazard red bags, to disposes of anything that has bodily fluids or waste so those items can be handled with the appropriate precautions. ...Northern California Sign up for our monthly E-Newsletter Home Local Markets Management Topics Industry Topics Insights Multimedia Events Marketing Programs About Us How an executive coach can help improve employee morale and productivity 03.01.2012 | Northern California Ricci M. Victorio, CSP, Managing Partner, Mosaic Family Business Center As companies continue to try to do more with less, the stress of doing the work of two or more people is taking a toll on employees. And that is making them less productive, less motivated and less likely to do their best work, says Ricci Victorio, CSP, managing partner at Mosaic Family Business Center. “As companies deal with lower budgets and tighten their belts, they are putting ever-greater demands on their employees,” says Victorio. “As an employer, you need to help your employees fill their cups back up, because they are being significantly drained. Whenever you have people being pushed at absolute top levels performing on all 100 cylinders all of the time, they run out of gas. And when they run out of emotional gas, negative behaviors start springing up.” Smart Business spoke with Victorio about how one-on-one coaching with employees can improve morale and help them work better together as a team. What is the value of executive coaching? It can improve morale and provide an internal vision for employees as they ask: What is my value? Why am I here? What am I doing? How can I do it better? Improved morale increases...

... paper on the strategies and policies used by street hawker are helping the corruption to grow more faster. Introduction; I propose to find the unbelievable but realistic truth about the unfair business policies and strategies of street hawkers which are effecting the growth of corruption badly. Street hawkers may looks like a very poor and decent people but for their business they are following many such strategies that are very unethical. Moreover as a result of those policies some honest people in the same profession can not make this business profitable. Understanding the bad effects of those policies I intend my paper to be a background report for audiences and hope that my research will help readers to concern about this problem and take adequate actions to solve it. Areas to be studied: At this point in my research I have identified the following four questions to investigate: 1) What are the main strategies and policies of street hawkers which are unethical? 2) What are the main reasons to follow these unfair business strategies and policies? 3) What are the advantages and disadvantages to follow these strategies and policies? 4) How these strategies and policies will affect the growth rate of corruption? I plan to divide the body of my paper into four sections, each one exploring one of these questions. I...

...minimum cost, the number of suitable and qualified candidates to satisfy the needs of the organisation. The organisation attracts candidates by means of identifying, evaluating and using the most appropriate sources of applicants. El-Kot and Leat’s (2008) observation is that recruitment begins with advertising existing vacancies As already mentioned, this can be done internally or externally. In this instance the researcher was interested in external sources and processes as organisations in the Province are currently experiencing an undersupply of suitable candidates. Company policies related to the employment of relatives may influence its recruitment efforts. Currently more and more companies implement anti-nepotism policies that prevent the employment of close relatives, especially relevant to placement of candidates in the same departments or work groups (McMillan, 2006). Recruitment and selection is the process of attracting individuals on a timely basis, in sufficient numbers and with appropriate qualifications (Walker, 2009).Thus recruitment is the process of identifying and attracting potential candidates from within and outside an organization to begin Organizations use these processes to increase the likelihood...

Research Methods

... Accra, Ghana How do you choose a good research topic? Give 5 examples of a good research topic and justify your choices, i.e. problem issues in each topic and why they must be researched upon. (Not less than 2000 words). 1. Research defined The Oxford English Dictionary, 2002, defines research as ‘the systematic study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions’. According to Zina O’Leary, 2004, a research is a process that needs to be actively managed. The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden and has not yet been discovered. Research is therefore undertaken to gain familiarity with new insights into a phenomenon (i.e., formative research studies); to accurately portray the characteristics of a particular individual, group, or a situation (i.e., descriptive research studies); to analyse the frequency with which something occurs (i.e., diagnostic research studies); and to examine the hypothesis of a causal relationship between two variables (i.e., hypothesis-testing research studies). 1.2 Research topic defined According to Laura Morrison, 2014, a research topic is an idea or theory that is expressed as a statement, a contention for which evidence is gathered and discussed logically. One of the most important concerns in choosing a thesis topic is that the topic speaks to an area of current or future demand. A research topic should be of interest to the researcher, advisors, and the research...

Hospitality Law and Legal Issues

...Introduction The topic of this paper deals with the selection and managing of employees as it relates to discrimination and sexual harassment. Discrimination and sexual harassment are two very hot topics that are indicative of bias in the hiring process and an environment of hostility and offensiveness in the workplace. It is unlawful to discriminate against an applicant and with anti-discrimination legislation in place; the employment recruitment and selection can only be based on the potential candidate's ability to perform assigned tasks. Attributes such as the level of experience, degree of education, and the quality of skills should be the only factors of consideration with no regard to disability, age, ethnicity, gender, or other distinguishing characteristics of the applicant ("Discrimination in the Selection Process”). Sexual harassment in the workplace can come in form of sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. There are two types of sexual behaviors that are unlawful: quid pro quo sexual harassment and hostile-environment sexual harassment. Quid pro quo sexual harassment happens when an individual's submission or rejection of sexual advances is used as the basis for employment decisions or as a term or condition of employment (“Sexual Harassment”). Hostile environment sexual harassment occurs happens when there is unwelcome sexual conduct that interferes with an individual's job performance and creates...

However, this role had neither been analyzed nor systematically studied using an experimental design until the 1960’s. The evaluation of the Head Start Program in the United States (Coleman, Campbell, Hobson, McPartland, Mod, Weinfeld, & York, 1966) fostered a national focus on outcomes related to parental involvement by suggesting a substantial relationship between parental involvement in their child’s education and their child’s success in academic domains. Subsequent studies have been presented which support the findings from Coleman, et al. (Duff & Adams, 1981; Henderson, 1987; 1988). Even so, other studies have reported either mixed or no significant differences between experimental and control groups when measuring the effect of parental involvement on student achievement (Griffith, 1996; Heller, & Fantuzzo, 1993; Henry, 1974; Keith, Reimers, Ferman, Pottenbaum, & Aubrey ,1986; Ryan, 1964; Searles, Lewis & Morrow, 1982). Some of the discrepancy across studies...

Our hospital is doing follow-up phone calls weekly to Congestive Heart Failure patients in order to reduce within thirty day of readmission. This phenomenon became interesting to understand how many places use tele communication. Doing the research, I discovered many different types of tele communications were available to community along with hospital setting. In searching for references, I started with wiki, google, scholarly journal, and blog but limited to scholarly journal only. As a professional nurse, I found that scholarly journal were more reliable and pertain to nursing. Also, scholarly journal talks about nursing informatics in how they use technology to assist in nursing care on continuum of patient care. The process used to locate source of information was Thomas Edison State College online library access. The keyword used for search was telenursing. The search engine was EBSCO and ProQuest. In EBSCO, there were 1,574 references available. Once the advanced search used limited to date selection, full text, articles and English. The result was 154 references available and for academic journal were 125. In using ProQuest, there were only 339 references available. Narrowing the search limited to date...

Proposal

... Aiping Zhang Term Paper Proposal The topic I’d like to explore for my term paper is the heavy gender role/ stereotypes placed on women throughout different cultures and times. I want to bring to light the moments in which women were oppressed in all aspects of their life. I am interested in this topic because I am a woman myself and although I haven’t had to deal with all the trials and tribulations as the women of these times, this is still my history. Women have always been oppressed into a stereotype, even in today’s society there are still certain stigmas on the female gender. This issue is discussed and expressed in all forms of today’s media, education, policies and so on. Many perspectives on this issue bring forth feminism acts and organizations with goals aimed towards equal rights for men and women. Without these struggles I don’t know where I’d be in today’s society. The two texts that I have selected to write my comparison on are The Awakening by Kate Chopin and Daisy Miller by Henry James to which I’ll be able to compare the bias and misery between each woman’s struggles. The questions that my research will cover will expand on the ideals and basis of the female gender role throughout history and the main concepts as to why they are placed in those realms. Within my preliminary research I have found the repetitive oppression of the women spirit and freedom. In my paper I will present my two literature selections as support for my findings of the box to which...

Resourcing Strategy

...engaged in employee resourcing activities. Therefore, this elective is designed to recognise the following key points: • For any organisation to achieve its people resourcing outcomes, the people resourcing professional must be aware of the organisation’s strategic direction and be able to demonstrate that the resourcing policies, systems and procedures contribute to achieving the corporate strategic goals. • There is no guarantee that today’s organisations will exist in the indefinite future, either at all or in their present form. So this elective seeks to address the competencies that resourcing professionals are likely to need ‘everywhere and tomorrow’, rather than just ‘here and now’. • Administering employment systems in line with the law and recognised standards of fairness and good practice is important, but it doesn’t make the difference between success and failure in the market place. People resourcing professionals add real value through their contribution to the recruitment, selection, deployment, development and retention of people who themselves add value to the organisation, individually and collectively. • Many employers still use recruitment and selection processes for which there is little or no supporting evidence. The talents and potential of people are often dissipated or neglected, poor performers are still ignored, sidelined, promoted or dismissed without any serious attempt to resolve the problem, and performance review systems...
