The Pacific Maritime Association represents 72 cargo carriers, terminal operators and stevedores that operate 29 major U.S. ports spanning the west coast from Washington to Southern California (Pacific). The International Longshore and Warehouse Union represents approximately 42,000 members, which includes the 20,000 West Coast dockworkers that process over 340 million tons of cargo per year. This cargo represents over 12.5 percent of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product. The contract in dispute between the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union expired on July 1, 2014. Since that time, the port facilities had continued to operate without a contract, but as time passed, pressure from both sides increased in order to reach an agreement. ...In the beginning of the lab I started by exploring both the tcpClient.c and tcpServer.c code. When I had a rough understanding of how it worked, I tried running it. This caused an error to occur. The problem was I was using Winsock sockets instead of BSD sockets. One, Winsock, is a socket creator for windows, the other BSD socket is an application programming interface for Unix. So, in order to get the application running, I simply had to change WIN to BSD sockets. Next I ran both files again and this time I got back a message from the server saying that it had received a message. Then I opened Wireshark to view what was going on between the client and server. In the top frame, I could see the handshake occurring between the client and server, the client was sending a SYN(Synchronize) and the Server was replying with a SYN-ACK, which means Synchronize acknowledgment. I also noted there was a push function occurring, and when I clicked on the psh function and viewed its output in the bottom frame of Wireshark, I could see the message that has been sent. Next I learnt about how to run the server I had created infinitely, to do this I put the entire code, starting at the #endif underneath “WSAStartup”, in a while loop. This would cause an issue later on in the lab, which I’ll discuss shortly. After putting in the code, I had to compile it again, and then when I ran it, I was able to continuously create a connection via the client. After that I wanted to have one of my classmates...

Access to the port is naturally limited by its shallow river location, high silt deposit rates, long approach and international boundaries. Umm Qasr activities are also limited by man-made obstacles such as wrecks, UXOs and minefields encroaching on its single, narrow channel. Despite these limitations, for the next 10 to 15 years Umm Qasr is clearly Iraq's most viable international port and one that is struggling to achieve a small fraction of its potential traffic. Numerous surveys of the port have stated that the currently operating equipment for cargo handling is inadequate for a vibrant, functioning port. However, the capacity of the port with its current equipment is substantially greater than what is being achieved, and additional equipment alone would have little impact on the port’s overall throughput or employment because the current operating systems and procedures are already incapable of productively utilizing and maintaining the port’s quite substantial current assets.
