Port Expander
Port expanders are devices that allow one port on a computer system to connect to multiple devices. You have the internal and external ports; they are the two basic ports. An internal expander is inside of the computer, usually connected to the motherboard. You can only see the expansion plate containing multiple ports. External device hooks up to the existing port and from there it has multiple places to connect. If it’s not connected to the computer system the devices are known as splitters. The advantage of using port expanders are that you get more ports to use. Some disadvantages of ports are a lot of them are external, because it uses more power. If your power source isn’t good enough it could cause problems and when you add more devices it takes up power. Docking stations and port replicator are accessories that you keep at your desk. Your laptop receives additional functionality, making it more like a desktop computer when it’s used at your desk. It communicates with a local printer, larger storage or backup drives, and possibly other devices that are not usually taken along with a notebook computer. It can also hold NIC that attaches it to a local area network. Port replicators are an attachment that allows a number of devices to be simultaneously connected. Each device connects to the port so when you’re ready to access one or more devices, the person just attaches the port replicator. This connects it all at once. It duplicates each of the notebook’s ports. That’s including parallel, serial, joystick and MIDI. One thing to remember is a port replicator is similar to a docking station, but does not include expansion

...Port Expander I had never heard of a port expander before this class, but after much looking, I’ve found out what a port expander is and what it does. “ A port expander is a hardware device designed to allow a user to utilize more than one device on a single port at one time. For example, the device may allow seven devices to connect to one serial port.”(Computer Hope, 2016) It still didn’t make much sense to me, even after reading about it. As I went along finding more information, the more sense it made. What I found about this item is that additional ports receive and send data into a parallel format, which means it needs to be converted to a serial format. I found on the internet sixteen different port expanders, those would be SCSI port expander, audio port expander, VGS port expander, SATA port expander, Ethernet port expander, Modus Serial port expander, SSD port expander, SAS port expander, DB-25 port expander, USB port expander, VDI port expander, Microphone port expander, Video port expander, and Serial port expander (termpaperwarehouse, 2016). As far as if the port expanders are made for specific types of computers, what I’ve found are mixed answers online for this one. So for my own conclusion, I’m going to say they are generally basic, but doesn’t mean it will work with all computers, because a port expander doesn’t actually introduce any new hardware, just introduces a connection. It seems there are advantages and disadvantages to using a port expander...

That being said, all the computers from PC to Mac have all the same ports so one type of port expander should connect to that specific port on any type of computer. Port expanders offer the advantage of allowing more devices of a particular port type to be utilized at the same time. The downside or disadvantage to this is that all those devices will share the output for that single port that the expander was connected to. For example, a 3 Gbps port would then...

Pretty much all computers from PC to Mac have all the same ports on them. One example of a port that was more specific just to Macs is the firewire, though these days firewire is rarely used. There are advantages and disadvantages of using a port expander. An advantage is that you get more ports to use. SAS takes one port and makes many out of them. A disadvantage is that a lot of the time they are external and can be annoying by being in the way. Also , if your power source isn’t good enough it could cause problems. When you add more devices it takes up more power, the power source can only handle so many extra ports. ...A port expander essentially allows one to become two. What I mean by that is it allows more than one device to connect to a single port. Expanders are equivalent to splitters or extension cords in everyday life. They are usually inside the computer on the motherboard, with the only visible part of it being the extension plate showing multiple ports. Some example of the type of ports that we’ve covered and that I’m familiar with are: Ethernet Port Firewire Port Serial Port VGA Port Audio/Video Ports SATA Port DVI Port USB Port DB-25 Port Microphone Port Port expanders are pretty generic, meaning that they’re compatible for almost any PC. There is not a specific expander made for the numerous number of computer brands on the market today. The advantages and disadvantages sort of go together when talking about port expanders. They do allow you to connect more devices at one time but it also slows those devices down. Depending if the port has a 3GBps or 6GBps, all the devices had to share that speed, rather than being used individually and using all of the particular speed for one device. In most cases, buying port expanders are more convenient than trying to find a computer that comes with that many ports for a decent price. The only true downside you could run into would be the amount of power you have available on your computer. There are only so many ports you can use at one time before you overload your computer. Once it overloads, it will...

What Is a Port Expander

...what exactly is a port expander ,the author of this essay asks? A port expander is basically a device, that can be connected internal through the motherboard or an external connector, witch allows you to connect multiple devices to a single port. The way the port expanders works is it literally act as an add on for other devices. Think of a port expander like a modern surge protector. A surge protector has a single prong on the end of it to plug into one outlet but the surge protector also has several connector points on its other end to expands the one electrical unit to about several different units. This is the same idea for a port expander. The port expander has on connector port that goes into the receiving computer port and on the other end of that connector port are about several ports that can be used with the single connector port. Port expanders are very much so universal, simply because the ports themselves are universal so there aren't any specific expanders, or another that port expanders are called is a hub, for specific computers and they are generic devices that will work with any computer. So with ports there are some good reasons or advantages for them but just as there is good you also have the bad or disadvantages for them as well. One disadvantage or the major disadvantage would be because that one port is be shared with so many devices it will definitely cause slower connection speed between transmitting information between the ports. To offset that disadvantage...

...Port Expanders Port expanders is a hardware device designed to allow a user to utilize more than one device eon a single port at one time. It provides additional support for the input and output devices. Its most common slot is the PCI also known for peripheral component interconnect, AGP advanced graphics port, PCIe peripheral component interconnect express. It also cover audio modem riser AMR, and CNR communications network riser. The PCI slots can be used for many add ons such as video audio, I/O and storage adapters. The AGP slot was introduced as a high speed video in 1996, but in 2005 the PCI has been replaced for all of the new systems. The AGP has been imrpoving and have been reflecting changes through out the years. Note to this AGP slot it could be temporarily borrowed when creating 3D textures. This is a very important message, once the Pro AGP has been removed cover the extension with a sticker to prevent damge. The PCI Express slots began to replace both PCI and AGP slots in the new system, this started in 2005. PCI express has four types of slots: x1, x4, x8, x16. The most common version includes x1, x4, and x16. The PCIe sends information serially over on or more lanes. A lane is a group of signal paths that can collect and receive data. Full Duplex is when data is received and send at the same time. The max MBps is 8,000 for a PCIe x16. ...

...HDMI The High Definition Multi Media Interface (HDMI) is a single cable and user-friendly connector, provides an interface between any audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV). It supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio with bandwidth. USB The Universal Serial Bus (USB) is very user friendly & is referred to as plug and play because of its easy use. Before USB, connecting devices to your system was often a hassle. Modems and digital cameras were connected via the serial port which was quite slow, as only 1 bit is transmitted at a time through a serial port. USB works on Windows and Mac, plus can be used with other operating systems. The USB uses two types of connectors; • USB A (Host) often referred to as the downstream connector. We will explain whether or not port expanders are specific to a computer or generic in nature. We will also analysis the advantages and disadvantages are when using port expanders for your computer. What is a port expander? A port expander is a device that allows your computer to be connected to many other devices at one time. (What is a port expander, 2014) There are two basic forms of port expanders; internal and external. The internal port expander is an expander the normal computer user cannot see. It is located inside of the computer and it is normally connected to the computer’s motherboard. The only identifier that this type of port expander is connected to your computer is the expansion plate displaying multiple ports. This plate is normally located on the back of your computer and allows you to pull in your external devices. The external port expander is an external device that is plugged into an existing port that allows you to connect multiple additional ports to your computer. Since these ports are not a part of the computer system itself, they can also be known or classified as splitter. Splitters are common in the world that is not filled with computer language; for instance an extension cord or cable boxes that us an A/B switch to convert from one set of channels to another. There are two basic forms of port expanders: internal and external. An internal expander has a connection inside the computer. An external device plugs into the existing port and then has multiple places to connect. The way they work is, you basically plug the expander to one of the ports on your laptop or desktop and then you have multiple copies of that port on the other end, which you can use to connect more devices at the same time. Port expanders exist for many different devices and not only for computers. Outside the computer world they are known as splitters, extension cords, cable splitters, etc. They are usually generic and made to fit various types of devices or computers. One of the advantages in using a port expander is that you can use more devices even if your computer does not have the required ports for them. I’m not sure there are too many disadvantages in using one, they may overwhelm the motherboard with too much energy consumption, and that could mess with your power source. Their prices usually range from a couple of dollars to thousands, depending on what your needs is. USB Port Expander for PS3. It expands the 2 USB ports in the PS3 to 5. TOSHIBA I/O EXPANDER.
