PORT SERVICE QUALITY CONCEPT THEORETICAL DETERMINANTS
Port service quality may be defined as a product or service that satisfies customer requirements and expectations. According to the Advances project, to secure a quality port service means to secure a service in a reliable, safe, competitive and environment-friendly manner in accordance with customer requirements and the lowest possible level of risks for life, environment, and property.
The enhancement of competitiveness, safety, and higher level of port environment protection calls for introduction of a port service quality concept, based on clearly defined term denoting quality, precisely determined requirements the port is required to meet on the market, port basic functions (operational areas), identification of stakeholders and their requirements, and bottle-necks and problems most frequently encountered in port operations.
The complexity of the port service quality concept ensues from principal features of services themselves (intangibility, heterogeneity, and inseparability of production from consumption), from the complexity of the port service process of production, as well as from the large number of stakeholders taking part in service production and subjective approach to the understanding of quality.
Service quality may be defined from two aspects: the organization-based aspect and the customer-based aspect. Whereas from the organization-based aspect service quality is the basic requirement characterized by the price, from the customer-based aspect quality is a set of attributes (dimensions are the most important service quality parameters measurable by a set of attributes) for the evaluation of service meeting customer requirements. From the organization-based aspect, the provided service must be in compliance with customer requirements, provided however that the cost of quality be taken into

...ASA University Review, Vol. 4 No. 1, January–June, 2010 Measuring Service Quality: A Comparative Analysis Between Standard Chartered Bank and Dhaka Bank Mohd. Takdir Hossan* Abstract This study compares the quality of services provided by Standard Chartered Bank and Dhaka Bank Ltd in Bangladesh. The premise of the paper is that the quality of bank’s services would be contingent on the incentive structure under which these institutions operate. Since banks are not subsidized and depend on income from clients, they would be more motivated to provide quality services to clients to meet their needs more effectively and efficiently. This premise was supported. Customers’ perception of service quality and key demographic characteristics were also used to predict choice of banks. Key Words: Customers Expectation, Perception and Satisfaction Introduction The Jews in Jerusalem introduced a kind of banking in the form of money lending before the birth of Jesus Christ. The word 'bank' was probably derived from the word 'bench' as during ancient time Jews used to do money-lending business sitting on long benches. First modern banking was introduced in 1668 in Stockholm as 'Svingss Pis Bank' that opened up a new era of banking activities throughout the European mainland. In the South Asian region, early banking system was introduced by the Afghan traders popularly known as Kabuliwallas. Muslim businessmen from Kabul, Afghanistan, came to India and started money lending business in...

A preliminary analysis of the spatial determinants of firms’ export activities by Indian states has been undertaken in this study. The size of technological knowledge stock, port facilities and credit availability in a state are observed to be favouring higher export intensity of local firms. All these call for state’s policy attention to improve regional knowledge base, strengthening of port facilities or ensuring better transportation networks to ports and improved credit availability if local firms were to face the least hurdles in their efforts to internationalize. Fiscal incentives continue to promote firms’ export activities. In addition, firms own characteristics...

...Quantitative Study of Swedish Manufacturing SMEs Author: Place of Birth: 1st Examiner: 2nd Examiner: Tutor: Term: Due Date: Maxime Abel Frankenthal, Germany Prof. Håkan Boter (Mid Sweden University) Prof. Dr. Jürgen Stephan (Fachhochschule Aachen) Dr. Darush Yazdanfar Summer 2008 May 30th, 2008 Abstract This study examines the impact of working capital management on cash holdings of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in Sweden. The aim of this work is to theoretically derive significant factors related to working capital management which have an influence on the cash level of SMEs and test these in a large sample of Swedish manufacturing SMEs. The theoretical framework for this study consists of a treatise of motives for holding cash, working capital management and cash level. From these theoretical findings, two hypotheses are deduced: • H1: Cash holdings are negatively related to the presence of cash substitutes • H2: Cash holdings are positively related to working capital management efficiency The quantitative investigation consists of the statistical analysis – namely comparison of means and correlation analysis – of key figures which are calculated from the financial statements of a large sample of firms. The dataset contains 13,287 Swedish manufacturing SMEs of the legal form ‘Aktiebolag’. Both hypotheses are confirmed by the results. Empirical evidence is presented which substantiates the supposition that the presence of cash substitutes – namely inventory...

Education in science and mathematics therefore becomes bedrock and indispensable tools for scientific, technological and economic advancement in any nation. It gives the nation the capacity to apply technology for the exploitation of the resources of nature. Such exploitation will depend greatly on mathematics for laying the foundation for political, governmental, military, civil, scientific, technological advancement, economic development, socio-cultural and environmental peace. The importance of mathematics transcends all the definitions and the prosperity of any country depends on the volume and quality of mathematics offered in its school system. Obe (1996) conceptualises mathematics as the master and servant of most disciplines and thus, a source of enlightenment and understanding of the universe. He further opines that without it, the understanding of national problems would be superficial. Greaber and Weisman (1995) agree that mathematics helps the individual to understand the environment and to give accurate account of the physical phenomena around every person.
