In the 2015 Langley High School Science Fair, I will be performing an experiment that will prove whether or not the potential hydration (pH) of a liquid has any direct effects to its solubility. Potential Hydration, also known as pH, has everything to do with “hydrogen ions” [5]. An acidic liquid is a liquid that “donates hydrogen ions” and a basic liquid is a liquid that “receives hydrogen ions” [5]. Solubility is “the amount of substance that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent” [1]. Solubility can be easily measured and determined when “even after vigorous and prolonged stirring, some of that substance does not dissolve [1]. Solubility is considered a characteristic property, a property of matter that identifies and categorizes a substance or in this case, a liquid. Recognizing whether or not potential hydration of a liquid affects the solubility of the liquid will affect many things. Practical uses of solubility include “purifying water, making drinks, and …show more content…
The pH is meant to affect the solubility of the liquid, the dependent variable. If a liquid is a more acidic (higher in potential hydration) then the solubility will be greater than a more basic liquid. I believe my hypothesis is correct for various reasons. Firstly from background knowledge, I know that there are stomach acids in our stomach that help dissolve food, which exemplifies how this acid requires high solubility in order to whole and dissolve all the food we eat. Changing the potential hydration of an aqueous solution, “you can change the charge state of the solute” [4]. By changing the charge state of a solute, it is possible to convert molecules to having no net electrical charge and having decreased electrical charge “the solute has minimal solubility” [4].
