A young man named James knows he has a short amount of time left to live and is left the choice of on how he will live the rest of his life, in the story "Reunion" by Adam Haslett. James decided to leave his job and begins to write letters to his deceased father. In the letters he expresses the feelings he has for one of his colleagues Patrick, the memories he had with his father and the final moment he will reunite next to his father's grave.Throughout the story, we learn that James chooses to isolate himself from the rest of the world. He denies himself from having any kind of contact with the only person he cares about Patrick. On the other hand we are left with grief, the death of one’s parents is one of the most drastic and overwhelming experience any human being can live through in life. In the story “The Beginnings of grief” Adam Haslett's the unnamed narrator demonstrates the power that grief can have in a person's life, and one may find comfort in pain with another human being while one is gathering the strength to survive. Because of such unpredictable change, the boy begins to act and interest his need for others in unpredictable ways, he begins to have violent encounters with a boy named Gramm. Also the death of a son can have a major impact in the life of a mother, one who is left to grief and deal with physiological problems. In “The Good Doctor” by Adam Hassett, a middle-aged women Mrs. Buckholdt is diagnosed with depression after her son dies from car crash and drug abuse. Through the story we learn that she is left with a grief that causes her to feel loneliness and incapable of escaping the memories she has with her son. One gets to learn from the stories that death can show up through life in many form, whether it is though grief or ones own
