The book “Whale Done! The Power of Positive Relationships” authored by Ken Blanchard offers readers insight on how one’s interactions with people can make a dramatic change to a person’s life. Using the interactions of whales and their trainers as an example, the book offers methods and tips on how to turn negative situations into positive relationship building situations. The book offers these tips and methods through a simple story about a struggling manager. This simplistic story works well with the also simplistic manner in which the tips are given, along with the relative shortness of the book. To shortly summarize the two methods, the gotcha method is essentially catching people doing the wrong things, and the whale done method is catching people doing the right things. The book points out that more often than not people will more easily be able to point out things other people are doing wrong than things people are doing right, and I would have to agree with this. For example if I were to correctly cooked scrambled eggs no one would say oh you made them right, as opposed to if I said I would make scramble eggs but instead they were sunny side up then almost everyone would point out the failure on my part. It is quite evident that people will always pay more attention to the things done wrong than the things done right, and the book does a wonderful job of highlighting this point to the reader.
