Roughly during the 1580s the Powhatans were a collection of Indian tribes of eastern Virginia who were controlled by chief Wahunsonacock (Axelrod 11). The Powhatans were spread across a range of around two hundred villages, located in the region of Jamestown (Axelrod 12). In December of 1607 the most famous confrontation between the Powhatan Indians and the English settlers occurred. John Smith came to Jamestown to help govern the people of the British colony. He was captured by Powhatan Indians and allegedly claimed to be saved from execution by the interference from Chief Powhatans daughter, Matowaka; she was then given the nickname that we all know her as, Pocahontas, which has a variety of meaning consisting of “Spoiled child”, “naughty
