Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “To be yourself in a world that is trying to make you something else is a great accomplishment”. Working as an architect one has to balance between the ideal and the reality without compromising your self or your idea. Since I was young and up until now, I really believed that I have been true to myself and I am really proud of that. So a question such as “who am I?” sounds perplexing at first but is actually straightforward for me. I am an architect that pride herself of getting the job done right.

Other people might look at me as a reserved and quite person. For those who knew me well they would say that I am bold and would speak my mind at the right time. I am pretty much a go-getter. Generally I am a person who doesn’t get fazed by my surroundings or other circumstance around me. I usually keep my distance and observe the situation and mostly focus on my own things. I would have an original view on different things and this would make me feel like a unique individual.

After graduating from an architecture school one of my goal was to work abroad and gain some international experiences. Being an ambitious person with a strong will, I found my way to Sydney Australia looking for work. It was very difficult since I don’t have a work permit. So I got myself into graduate school, a self- enhancement move. I stayed in school for about six months and it just did not feel right. I feel that I needed to work and gain some experience so that I can better understand whatever they are teaching in the graduate school.

One of my goals was to work for a great designing firm name WATG. This firm was a US based architecture firm designing famous hotel and resort all over the world. So I made my move to the United States. I work for 4 years at two architectural firms gaining tons of experience before I apply to work for my dream firm, WATG. At WATG I learn what great designing is all about. There is no compromising the ideal while satisfying your customer. It was the best work experience I ever had. Working 8 years in the United States had opened a new perspective to me, not only in term of job experience but also in terms of cultural diversity and the organization behaviors.

As an architect, my unique ideas and independent mindset help me to become a strong designer in a lot of different aspects. I love this profession and I think it really fits my personality because I feel like I could express my thought with the design. I can be bold about expressing my ideas and this could become a good thing and also a bad thing for me as well, I need to express it at the right time. Perhaps, this is the reason why I have learned to become more quite than out spoken. I believe that good design makes everything better in life. I also believe that we can improve things with new ideas and open mind.
With my current role as a Senior Development Manager, design is my strongest skill set, but as I move up the ladder in my career, I am doing less design and more on the management side, both people management and budget control. These are the two areas I feel that need improvement, management and finance. Executing work on time and within budget are keys to my success.
As a busy individual, I always try to make enough leisure time for family, friends, and activities. “Work hard, play harder” is my motto. I believe that we need to have a good balance of both work and fun in life to stay healthy.
Since young age my mother had taught me that if you want to do something do it to your very best. Her words echo in my head every time I am on a new endeavor. I always strive to do everything the best that I could. Being that I was taken out of my comfort element and had to migrate to America, the experience has mold me to become a stronger and better person in both my personal and professional life. “Who am I?” is an easy question for me because I know who I am and what I am striving to be. I want to be the best at what I do no matter where I am or what organization I work for.
