Hi everyone, Casidhe here. As I was filling out the prepracticum self-assessment of strengths in The Social Work Practicum: A Guide and Workbook for Students, I was able to quickly notice what areas needed work and what areas could be considered my strengths (Garthwait, 2014). Having been in college for the last seven years, and being familiar with how I learn both in and out of a classroom setting, I was not surprised when it came to answering questions in the General Work Skills and Knowledge sections of the self-assessment. The only area that I had a work in-progress for the General Work Skills section is when it comes to writing reports. I felt this was a work in-progress, because I have a very limited knowledge base of how to do this when …show more content…
I am fortunate to be doing my internship with a unit that wants me to learn as much as possible about the organization and help me in any ways that they can to ensure that I am as successful as possible. Since my internship is with the Department of Children and Families, I walked in with a certain expectation ahead of time. My expectation is more for myself, than DCF. I hold myself at a higher level of expectation, because I have the desire to do social work as my career. This means that I want to learn as much as possible from those within my unit so that I can ensure greater success when I start my career. As such, I feel it is important to have an open mind and be willing to learn from those already in the career field, so that I can broaden my knowledge. These are concerns that I had addressed with my field instructor, prior to even being accepted into my field placement. I wanted him to be aware of the expectations that I had and ensure that they were realistic for the field placement. One of the great things about doing a field placement with my assigned unit is how open and welcoming they have

...Its major concerns include fostering capability to meet the challenges of self-discovery and effective participation in responding to the needs of society. With a vision to create a balance between society and the individual, the course intends to enable students in developing abilities needed for meeting the challenges and needs of the real world effectively. Along with it, students would also be encouraged to build a relationship with oneself, requisite for self discovery. To this end, the course emphasizes on building the conceptual foundations and acquiring psychological skills through classroom teaching/learning consisting of reflective as well as creative engagement in exercises, projects and hands on experiences. The teaching-learning of the programme would be organized through lectures, group discussions, experiential exercises, group projects, presentations, workshops and seminars. Students would be encouraged to connect to real life issues and participate in the programs and practices in the different social context. To this end practicum is incorporated as an important component in most of the papers with hands on training in the use of various research methods such as: laboratory experiments, field experiments, observation, testing, survey, interview, case study. The programme has three components i.e. Discipline 1(DC1), Discipline 2 (DC2) and Application courses (AC). While in DC 1 practicum is a key component, AC follows a modular pattern where hands on training will...

...1. What was my overall reaction to the assigned reading? I really enjoyed this reading in Chapter 9. I related this reading to the work I do in my field practicum as it relates to the cognitive and moral development of human beings and human behaviors. As you already know, I work for Stella Maris, a drug and alcohol treatment facility. We talk a lot about cognitive development and the concerns we have with our clients as it relates to their disease of addiction. We need to know what changes in intellectual abilities, mental activities, and behaviors through which knowledge of the world is attained. This requires an understanding of us as counselors, to know what the variety of factors are including, biological, social, environmental, experiential, and motivational as well as the emotional life of each of our clients’. When we know this information, we are best able to examination their needs and understand the ways in which their cognitive and moral development have hindered their lives. As a result, we are then able to treat the problem and get into the solution. At Stella, we do this by treating our clients in a number of different ways. According to Piaget, he believed the environmental factors played a large role in the psychological development, in general, and cognitive development. As a counselor, we see this everyday with our clients’. They come into treatment with different environmental factors that play a major role in their addictions. As a result, we see that in...

Professional Development

...Report Assuring quality in education has been the goal of educators for centuries. According to UNICEF every child has a right to an Education. This is also supported by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) which says, “Every child has the right to an education which develops their personality, talents, and abilities to the fullest.” The Ministry of Education of Trinidad and Tobago along with UNESCO supports these objectives and worked together to develop programs that would address these issues. The Education Policy Paper (1993 – 2003) states, “Every child has an inherent right to an education that will enhance the development of maximum capability regardless of gender, ethnic, economic, social or religious background.” One project that has been agreed upon is Education for All. Education for All has as one of its goals ‘improving all aspects of the quality of education and ensuring excellence of all so that recognized and measurable learning outcomes are achieved by all, especially in literacy, numeracy and essential life skills.” This goal can only be achieved through the ‘delivery of a systemof quality education to students at all levels of the education system.’ In order to provide quality education to students it is important that all stakeholders play an active role in the education process. Therefore it is important that teachers continually upgrade and develop their skills to be able to identify and properly meet the needs of students. The ministry...

...Teaching for Exceptionalities Benchmark Jettie McGraw SPE 226 February 24th, 2015 Abstract Special education teachers are required to accommodate their student’s special need by maintain and adapting lesson plans to meet their individual need and ability. Adapting the lesson plan to their specific need and ability requires observations, meetings and lots of patience. This essay details my experience within a special education classroom, it includes observations and a detailed accommodated lesson plan. This experience provided me with insight on the daily life of a special education teacher, and prepares me for a future career in teaching. Teaching for Exceptionalities Benchmark Students with special needs require adapted teaching methods that vary from those of their peers. These adapted methods stem from detailed observations, that are then included in an adapted lesson plan that is specific to that child’s need. Each adapted lesson plan has a goal, both short term and long term. These goals are then further extended in the form of evaluations and even more observations that are essential in determining a child’s ability in a core area, which then aides the teacher in creating a lesson plan suitable for this child and their need. It is essential that a special education teacher actively observes her students, evaluates what they have learned, and adapts the lesson plan to their need, to create a learning environment that is developmentally appropriate and educationally...

Grassley, PhD, RN Robin Bartoletti, MS Online education requires nursing faculty to learn teaching strategies that encourage students’ interaction with the course content, their peers, the faculty, and the technology. The Web 2.0 technologies of wikis and blogs can help faculty direct online learning activities that encourage peer support, collaboration, and dialogue. The authors discuss these tools and how they were used to engage students in a nursing research course. ince the mid-1990s, increasing numbers of people have come to rely on the Internet as a convenient source of information and education. In nursing, the growing need for convenient and nontraditional learning strategies fostered a proliferation of Web-based nursing education programs. ...Mahara Platform First established in mid 2006, the Mahara project started as collaborative venture funded by New Zealand's Tertiary Education Commission's e-learning Collaborative Development Fund (eCDF), involving Massey University, Auckland University of Technology, The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, and Victoria University of Wellington. Continued development has been made possible by further support from New Zealand’s Ministry of Education and the application of Mellon Foundation funds from the Open Polytechnic’s winning a 2007 Mellon Award for Technology Collaboration. Since July 2007, KineoPacific has worked with CatalystIT to guide the further development of Mahara. A first guiding principle with the development of the Mahara ePortfolio system is that it is learner centred – a form of Personal Learning Environment. This is in contrast to the more institution-centric Learning Management System (LMS). Mahara is a stand-alone system that can be integrated into a wider virtual learning framework. We believe the Learning Management System remains a highly useful application for delivering learning. We also believe the overall environment can be enhanced and complemented by a learner-centred personal learning environment such as Mahara. Pan-institutional learner communities can also be encouraged using Mahara. Mahara’s architecture is inspired by the modular, extensible architecture of Moodle. The Mahara team has also been heavily involved in the Moodle community, with...
