1. According to Maslow's hierarchy, which basic needs did Shank's old boss fail to meet? Explain why the needs have not been met. What could be done to meet these missing needs?
Shank’s old boss failed to meet the basic needs of belongingness, esteem and self-actualization. The need for belonginess was not met because her boss made her feel as if she was not needed and could easily be replaced which made her feel like she was not part of the team at work. The need for self –actualization was not met, she felt that she had no part in the decision making in regard to her work or chance to learn new things and she felt like she will not have a chance to develop and grow. She had a feeling of why should she work hard for them when they don’t know her or how hard she works for their company and if you are not feeling good about your job/career that definitely has an effect on your self-esteem.
What could be done to meet these needs is a job/career that motivates employees to get up in the morning looking forward to work, ensure the tasks, projects or roles she is involved with take advantage of her skills and talents. Every employee wants to be proud to tell other people who they work for and to be liked management, coworkers and supervisors. I am sure employees would love to develop with the company for years to come; work for an employer that is fair and ethical, and gives back to the community, that is important to most people. Providing employees with a job/career where they can actually say, I love what I do.

2. Use the Expectancy Theory and/or the Equity Theory of motivation to explain how feeling underpaid might affect the work of a Flight 001 associate and what a manager can do to increase the employee's motivation.

...The Four Principal Functions of Management: Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling Matthew Daley 24 September 2011 MAN 3353 Tristan L. Davison Abstract All new or old organizations whether small or big need to run smoothly and achieve the goals and objectives. Organizations can develop and implement their own management concepts. Basically, there are only four management principles that would allow any organization to control the tactically planned and set decisions. The four principles of management are used, just to have a controlled plan over the preventive measure. These four principal functions of management are: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. What is normatively held as good management practice for a non-diversified firm? * Process of organizing * Functional organization * More centralized decision-making * Specialist viewpoint at the top * Less formalization of structure required * Less coordination and committee management * Process of planning * Simple long range planning, * High involvement of top management in planning * Less participative, * Heavily linked with the control function * Process of controlling * Concentrated at the top * More detailed at the top * Less use of exception principles * Organization of control centralized What is normatively held as good management practice for a diversified firm? * Process of organizing ...

Principals of Management Ch 1

...Principals Of Management August 30th 2013 Chapter One – Case for Critical Analysis 1. It is possible for the top management to change Elektra Products into a new kind of organization. They should have taken the time to listen to their employee’s suggestions about the company with open minds. Instead of completely shooting down the team’s ideas, top management should have been open to the ideas or perhaps suggested some small changes to the ideas they didn’t agree with. Also, although Martin Griffin had an emergency that caused him to leave the meeting, he should have apologized, explained that he had an emergency then reschedule the meeting so he could hear the ideas as well. He would make his employees happier which would motivate them to work harder since they’ll be in an environment they feel comfortable in. 2. Barbra could have avoided the problems her team faced in the meeting by planning ahead. She is a loyal employee who has been with the company for some time now. She should have anticipated their rebuttals and should have had a defense prepared. 3. If I were Barbra Russell, I would take what top management said into consideration. I would use their arguments to tweak the report to make it better then present it to top management again. I wouldn’t let their arguments throw our idea away. If Martin Griffin was enthusiastic, I’d try to have another meeting where I pitch the teams idea and make sure he’s present to hear the entire...

Agency Theory

...Agency Theory: A brief Review by N. Waweru The agency theory assumes that there exists a contractual relationship between members of a firm. It recognises the existence of two groups of people; principals or superiors and agents or subordinates. The principals will delegate decision making authority to the agents and expect them to perform certain functions in return for a reward. Both the principals and the agents are assumed to be rational economic persons motivated solely by self-interest but may differ with respect to preferences, beliefs and information (Jensen and Meckling, 1976). The principal/agent relationship can exist throughout any organisation and usually starts from the shareholder-director and ends with the supervisor-shop floor worker (Figure 1.1). In an organisation context, which involves uncertainty and asymmetric information, the agent’s actions may not always be directed to the best interests of the principal. Agents’ pursuit of their self-interest instead of those of the principal is what is called the agency problem (Jensen and Meckling, 1976). To counter this behaviour, the principal may monitor the agents’ performance through an accounting information system. The owner can also limit such aberrant behaviour by incurring auditing, accounting and monitoring costs and by establishing, also at a cost, an appropriate incentive scheme (Jensen and Meckling, 1976). According to Jensen (1998), agency theory seeks to understand: (1) how to assign decision making...

Dr Brody

...Wayman-Brody EDU 530 06/17/2010 Strayer University If I had to choose a leadership style then, I have to say that I believe that I represent the Human Resource style of leadership. In an effective leadership situation, the leader is a catalyst and servant whose leadership style is support, advocating, and empowerment, while in an ineffective leadership situation; the leader is a pushover, whose leadership is abdication and fraud. Human Resource Leaders believe in people and communicate that belief; they are visible and accessible; they empower, increase participation, support, share information, and move decision making down into the organization. Scratch the surface of an excellent school and you are likely to find an excellent principal. Peer into a failing school and you will find weak leadership. That, at least, is the conventional wisdom. Leaders are thought to be essential for high-quality education. But is this indeed true and if so, exactly how does leadership work? Amidst the seeming certainty that leadership matters, there is much that we do not yet understand about effective educational leadership. However, the knowledge base about leadership is constantly growing. This knowledge can be used with confidence to guide leadership practice, policy, and research. It also can provide a good starting point for dialogue with diverse audience about the future of educational leadership. Like other complex human activities, leadership is difficult to pin down. It might...
