JAMAICAN TINGS
“PREPARING AND DELIVERING DELICIOUS MEALS TO YOUR DOOR”

DESCRIPTION
Jamaican Tings is a sole trader business that will be located at 3 Knutsford Boulevard Kingston 5. John Doe is the owner of the business he works as an accountant. Jamaican Tings will be engage in the production of tasty meals and beverages to customers. It will be align with secondary and tertiary sectors of the economy.
Jamaican Tings will register with the Companies Office of Jamaica as Sole Proprietor Business, the Inland Revenue Department and the other Statutory Agencies required by Law. All workers will have to be certified under the Ministry of Health and obtain a Food Handlers Permit. GOALS * To be the leading restaurant in the corporate area by 2016 * To expand the business to other major towns in Jamaica by 2017 * To provide well prepared meals and beverages to our customers at affordable prices MISSON STATEMENT To offer quality and value to our customers; providing them with meals and beverages that are affordable and of the highest quality. With our well trained and dedicated staff we aim to satisfy all our customers need.

JUSTIFICATION OF LOCATION Jamaican Tings will be located at 3 Knutsford Boulevard, Kingston 5. This location is ideal for the following: * Close proximity to the New Kingston Financial Sector market; close to the Kingston Business Hotels Tourism Market; and close enough to the other supporting offices for regular persons to come and purchase their favourite meals at affordable prices.

* Adequate parking space will be provided for customers so that they can come and go easily without any congestion in the parking lot. The parking area will be protected by our security personnel. There is a good transportation network for our walking customers as the transportation centre is a few blocks away from the restaurant.

* Workers live in close proximity to the business place, therefore they will be able to come early and save on transportation cost.

SELECTION OF APPROPRIATE LABOUR
To ensure the employment of an efficiently labour force, consequently running a successful business, the researcher intend on selecting workers with the necessary requirements to suit the labour force. The researcher will be employing twelve (12) workers.
{1 Head Chef, 2 Chefs, 1 Cashier, 4 Waiter(s)/Waitress(es), 1 Janitor, 1 Security and 3 Delivery Men} The duties of the Head Chef (professional) are to manage the entire operation of the kitchen such as ordering, stock control, planning menus and also to prepare the meals to the best of his/her ability. The Head Chef is needed to ensure the effective and smooth running of the kitchen.
The duties of the Chefs (professional) are to assist the head chef in the preparation of the meals, beverages, desserts and to serve the prepared meal(s) for the customers as shown on the Transaction Processing System. The Chefs are necessary as they will have to speed up the production process. The duties of the Cashier (skilled) are to type in the orders of customers into the Transaction Processing System which will be displayed on Transaction Processing System Screen in the kitchen, to total up the orders of the customers, collect the total amount owed, return change when necessary and to give receipt to who have cashed. The Cashier is to ensure that all customers pay for their meals.
The duties of the Waiter(s)/waitress(es) (skilled) are to collect the served meals from the Chef and give it to the customers with the responding receipt, ensure that all the tables are clean and ready for use. They also assist customers on their request when needed and ensure they are comfortable and satisfied.
The duties of the Janitor (semi-skilled) are to clean the restroom, sweep and wipe floor when necessary and after a day’s service. The Janitor is necessary as he/she ensure that the restaurant is clean and well sanitized. The duties of the security (skilled) are to provide protection for our customers and their vehicles and also to assist customers in finding empty parking spaces. The security is needed to ensure that the surrounding is safe for the customers.

SOURCES OF FIXED AND WORKING CAPITAL Fixed capital is assets that are depreciated over a longer period and are used repeatedly in the course of production. Working capital are those assets that are used up in the day to day operation of the business. Jamaican Tings fixed capital will be supplied by the following: Lucky Dollar Furniture and Industrial Store will supply us with our stoves, refrigerator, tables, chairs, utensils etc. Land and Building will be supplied by the landlord. Financing of the fixed capital will be from the researcher’s personal saving of 3 million dollars ($3.0M) at National Commercial Bank (NCB) and 2 million dollars ($2.0M) from another personal saving account at Bank of Nova Scotia along with a loan of 3 million dollars ($3.0M) from Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS). Working capital will be supplied by the following: Stock will be supplied by Grain’s Store and the Coronation market. Cash for working capital will be gain through a loan of 2 million dollars ($2.0M) from the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) secured on the warranty of the researcher.

ROLES OF THE ENTREPRENUER An entrepreneur is an individual who takes on the risk of starting a business as it may fail causing a great loss or it may be successful. An entrepreneur manages the business and makes decisions to ensure the success of the business. Some of these roles include: 1) Job creation deals with the creation of employment for the unemployed. 2) Organizing deals with the bringing together of employees, raw material, and equipment and putting task in a logical order. 3) Accessing Funds deals with moneys needed to maintain and start the business, these funds will be obtain from bank loans and personal savings.

TYPE OF PRODUCTION
Jamaican Tings will be engaged secondary and tertiary productions. Secondary production may also be referred to as manufacturing production; this production process involves taking raw materials and converting them into finish products. These raw materials to be converted into finish meals include: chicken, rice, flour, fruits, ground provision, sea food, raw vegetables, etc. Tertiary production involves offering the prepared meals to our customers. This process involves the Waiter(s) or Waitress(s), Chefs and Cashiers.

LEVELS OF PRODUCTION
In order to satisfy our customers Jamaican Tings will engage in domestic production; this is geared towards producing for local use. The researcher aims to provide only for local market. The local market includes the area of New Kingston, especially the business companies and also those who are 10 miles out of the New Kingston Region can receive deliveries.

QUALITY CONTROL MEASURES
Quality Control measures refer to the steps or measures taken to ensure that the products satisfy our customers and meet the required standards.
Prompt disposal of spilt food is one of the most important quality control measures as this deal with healthy and clean foods. This control measure will ensure that all spilt foods are dispose of properly and promptly to avoid serving or consuming of the split foods. Regular cleaning of our surrounding will ensure that there are no pest infestations. This will guarantee that the raw materials and prepared meals are not pest infested. There will be weekly pest control operation to avoid all pest infestations in the business.

USES OF TECHNOLOGY The technologies that Jamaican Tings will be engaged in are Transaction Processing System (Point Of Sale) and CCTV System. Transaction Processing System will enhance the daily operational activities such as purchase order received, accounting and data processing. This technology will be used in taking the orders of customers, sending purchase orders to the chefs in the kitchen, this information will be displayed on the Transaction Processing System (TPS) screen. This also helps the owner to keep up to date with his stock. CCTV system will guarantee safety and security for the business and its customers. This system will display the entire areas in the business via the CCTV cameras on the monitors which is linked to the cameras.

LINKAGES
Jamaican Tings will be engaged in backward linkage for raw materials such as: spices, herbs, meats from Grains Wholesale, ground provisions from Coronation Market; Lucky Dollar Furniture and Industrial Store will also link backwards to decorate and furnish the restaurant

BENEFITS OF THSE LINKAGES The benefits of this linkage between Jamaican Tings and Grains Wholesale is less cost for transportation as it is located nearby, credit facility as there is a 30 days credit on goods with no interest payments. While for Lucky Dollar Furniture and Industrial Store, cheaper source of furniture compared to other furnishing stores and their one year warranty of all furnisher. Coronation market is a cheaper source of raw material as I will be purchasing in bulk for a set price.

POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH

Internal Growth
At least 70% of profits made for the first five – ten years will be reinvested in the business to strengthen the capital base and working capital of the business in order to increase staff and to purchase more equipment and supplies. Raw materials will be purchased in bulk quantities as this allows us to get raw materials cheaper.

External Growth
The expansion of the business to different locations will be finance from the increased working capital from the existing business as well as when necessary loans from First Caribbean Credit Union.

GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS
To be recognized as a legal business here in Jamaica, one needs to first send in the necessary documents to the Register of Companies. If the proposal is accepted it is then a legal business. The government will become involved in the business for different purpose. In becoming a successful business and be beneficial to society we plan to do so correctly by acting in accordance with the law. The government regulations that I as an entrepreneurs of Jamaican Tings will put in place are the possession of a food handler’s permit, deduction of payments. The government regulation that relates to the business is the Ministry of Health Regulations. All workers must have a Food Handlers Permit; they will be paid minimum wages and overtime where necessary. The business will be inspected monthly by safety and health officials. The monthly inspections of the business will impacts on the business continuity, this will show that the business surrounding is clean, healthy and up to standards thus avoiding closing down by the government.

ETHICAL ISSUES
There are plenty of ethical issues that are associated with the business like fair wages, pollution, fair prices etc. Fair prices will increase our market sales as our customer will feel satisfy for their money’s worth. Simple guidelines will be put in place to ensure that, Jamaican Tings has good ethical principles. All workers will wear uniforms along with other kitchen garments while working. The researcher will ensure that everyone is properly attired. Workers should also be punctual.
