Kellogg

...Background summary: Kellogg Company is a manufacturer of cereal and convenience foods, such as cereal bars, fruit-flavored snacks, frozen waffles, cookies, and crackers. Kellogg manufactures its products in 17 countries and sells its products in over a hundred countries. The sales of core products, like cereal, has declined over time in major markets like the United States and Europe. Cereal was a convenient food for breakfast, but now consumers do not have time to “sit down with a bowl, milk, and spoon.” Snacks have become a core product for the company. Kellogg acquired Pringles to expand its market share in international snacks. Kellogg’s investors were pleased with the acquisition. Mr. Bryant paid for Pringles acquisition at a high price of $2.7 billion versus $950 million of Diamond’s deal, because he speculated Pringles would help Kellogg increase profits. Kellogg has faced intense competition from GM & Ralston, Quaker, Post & Nabisco, etc.. Knowledgeable consumers and nutritionists criticized the high caloric content and use too much of salt in Kellogg’s cereals. Mr. Robert Dickerson, Kellogg’s consumer research analyst, believed that the company should refresh its entire portfolio to attract consumers by changing its image on packaging and rebranding the products. Problem statement: Kraft is refocusing their production toward snacks, and Kellogg can face intense competition. Kellogg’s core market sales, profit, and share price have declined. Kellogg must find...

Leadership

...Why Leadership Is The Most Dangerous Idea in American Business If you're an entrepreneur, almost everything about "leadership" as we know it is bad for you. But there's another way to lead. Here are the rules.  Maybe you've noticed: Never in the history of management science has leadership been more studied, worried over, theorized about, and debated than right now -- not least because for two years the world has supplied leaders-in-training with a (mostly unhappy) curriculum. The stock bubble collapsed. The economy soured. September 11 came and begat whole new anxieties that prompted unprecedented questioning about vocational life and leadership in communities of every kind. Corporate scandals and greed brought CEO reputations low and raised ethics concerns high. And nowIraq. Throughout the contentious diplomatic run-up and then during the conflict itself, leaders were dissected everywhere. You'll recall the stories. Bush the autocratic unilateralist vs. Blair the participative consensualist. Rumsfeld vs. the generals. Churchill circa 1942 vs. all of the above (an op-ed smackdown that somehow Winny always wins). By the time this is published, there will have been more stories: How to lead. How we're being led. How we want to be led. The world's curriculum, like it or not, is rich with object lessons. The problem is that, for entrepreneurs, those lessons are all wrong. Not because they're necessarily bad in themselves, but because they're all to do with the wrong kind of leadership...

...* Data
Data are raw facts that describe the characteristics of an event or object. Before the information age, managers manually collected and analyzed data, a time-consuming and complicated task without which they would have little insight into how to run their business. Lacking data, managers often found themselves making business decisions about how many products to make, how much material to order, or how many employ- ees to hire based on intuition or gut feelings. In the information age, successful manag- ers compile, analyze, and comprehend massive amounts of data daily, which helps them make more successful business decisions.
Figure 1.2 shows sales data for Tony’s Wholesale Company, a fictitious business that supplies snacks to stores. The data highlight characteristics such as order date, cus- tomer, sales representative, product, quantity, and profit. The second line in Figure 1.2, for instance, shows that Roberta Cross sold 90 boxes of Ruffles to Walmart for $1,350, resulting in a profit of $450 (note that Profit = Sales − Costs). These data are useful for understanding individual sales; however, they do not provide us much insight into how Tony’s business is performing as a whole. Tony needs to answer questions that will help him manage his day-to-day operations such as: * Who are my best customers? * Who are my least-profitable customers? * What is my best-selling product? * What is my slowest-selling product? *...

I have read three different articles on the pros and cons of illegal immigration. Immigration is becoming a normal thing in the United States and it shouldn’t be. Summary In the article “Let Us Give Thanks to Our Immigrants” by Rupert Murdoch, he shows some evidence to support his agreeing with illegal immigration. He shows support on how they have contributed to the education in America. Whereas in the articles “The Winners in Immigration: Public Prisons,” by Aubrey Pringle, and “Republican Views on Immigration,” by RepublicanViews.org shows support on why immigration is not good for the United States. Murdoch shows that many of the high paying jobs in the United States are held by immigrants or children of immigrants. Whereas Pringle and RepublicanViews.org shows that our government is suffering because of all the illegal immigrants in our country. Argument Murdoch is pro-immigration. He has provided evidence to show why he supports immigration. He also was an immigrant himself and all his family was from Scotland. He does state though that these days it’s hard to talk about the benefits of immigration after 9/11, because many Americans worry about our borders and security. ...Diamond Foods Financial Fraud Scandal Adrienne M Somers David F McCormick Acct 320 February 27 2012 In April 2011, Diamond Food Inc (DMND), the nation's largest walnut processor and maker of Emerald nuts announced plans to buy Pringles from Proctor and Gamble for $1.5 billion in stock (Reuters, 2012). This move was part of the company's aggressive growth strategy to become a leader of the snack food industry. Former chief executive officer, Michael Mendes, and former chief financial officer, Steven Neil, spearheaded this effort. However, plans were postponed as questions arose about two large payments that were made to walnut growers in August of 2010 and September 2011 for $20 million and $60 million respectively. An internal audit of the financial records found that these payments were improperly booked into the wrong accounting period, which artificially reduced the company's costs, and boosted earnings in that period making the company look more profitable than it actually was. It is a technique known as earnings management. Because of the probe, Michael Mendes and Steven Neil were removed from their positions as CEO and CFO (Dalai, 2012). The financial records for 2010 and 2011 were found to be unreliable meaning that would have to restate their financial results for both these years. This scandal caused Diamond Foods Inc shares to fall by 40 percent. It seriously damaged the reputation of the company and the trust of their shareholders. It also ruined any chance...
