Essay # 3 First, consider the sources intents and or motives before promising obscurity. Reserve anonymity for sources who may come across peril, retaliation or other hazardous exposure, and include information that cannot be retrieved elsewhere. Explain why obscurity was allowed--If your publication has a policy, let’s say not identifying a sexual assault victim, it is understanding how to treat such a person. After all, there’s no law that says your publication can’t single out that victim.

Second, you as a copyeditor should know your publication’s policies inside and out and be able to make recommendations based on them. For instance identifying suspects in crimes before they’re charged
“The Associated Press had written stories with many of Stacy Peterson’s relatives or Drew Peterson’s acquaintances saying they heard Drew say, or heard Stacy say about Drew, that maybe he wanted to kill her; sometimes your publication’s policies or bosses set a clear guidance on how to grip specific cases. But sometimes they don’t, and it’s up to the copy desk to hash them out. “(Horan; 2011.)

Not forgetting to mention--sometimes your publication’s policies or bosses set a clear lead on how to manage certain cases. But sometimes they don’t, and it’s up to the copy desk to stew them out. A doctor is charged with malpractice, accused of murdering a patient due to the large breast implant size. “Your publication obtains basic information from the police, all public record, free of libel concerns.” (Doran; 2013.) But you also get an interview with the woman’s husband, who talks about how mortified his wife was. What do you do? Regardless if you believe the allocation stated “he could have murdered my daughter is backbiting, you have the mother saying several other things that certainly are more dubious, like After it happened, my wife went unconscious. It was just a grisly experience for her--Do you want to let the husband have her full control of the conversation, without the doctor providing their complete story? You can tip the question off your partners or co-workers to see if your questions are credible. Then you can deliberate your copy desk chief. “The chief may know what to do automatically or may suggest discussing the situation with the content editor manages the story or with the reporter; you’ll have to be able to communicate your policy and review the ethics of the matter, then everyone has to agree on a resolution—or your chief must make it. (“Doran; 2013.)

Next, ethical situations are not comprised of crimes. Sometimes they come up in numbers. For example, “Illinois’s governor wanted to raise the personal income tax rate from 3 to 5 percent.” (Holdman; 2011.) “That’s an increase of 2 percentage points, not 2 percent-- If you want to talk about the increase in agreement of a percentage change, it’s really a 67 percent.” (Holdman; 2011)

Lastly, the ethical dilemmas copyeditors face are continuous. Your publication must start to address them with written policies. If your publication doesn’t include them, take initiative to jot them yourself. “Your policies can answer such questions as what crimes should we report on? Every one? Even shoplifting? Every DUI? Students’ underage drinking parties with only tickets issued? At what point do you identify suspects in crimes? Is “person of interest” enough?” (Holdman; 2011.) There are privacy, accuracy, and burglarizing risks involved. Your publication must contemplate how it looks upon people. It’s a balance between providing the news --What should people know? And the behavior towards people--How would you expect to conduct around individuals? As you make policy, you will need to discuss these issues with many of your comrades, right up to the top editor. And keep in mind, no set of policies can beset everything because odd circumstances will always occur.

Benefits of Print Media

...Benefits of Print Media Print media uses a physical object such as newspapers, magazines, and newsletters as a means of transmitting information, entertainment, and news items among the public. It is the most traditional mode of media. Newspaper has been around since 1605 and print media remain the cheapest form of mass media communication. Magazines are periodical publications which were in trend until the radio, television and internet gained mass popularity by replacing much of the print media’s common forms through e-books, online journals and periodicals as well as online news. However, these traditional forms of mass media continue to maintain a large audience the world over (Kejriwal and Chakravorty 2014). The low cost and easy availability of print media compose some of the major advantages of media. Books have been the oldest means of passing information over the number of years. They can be archived and kept for future use. Also, newspapers, magazines, and brochures do not have any of the harmful side effects that broadcast media or internet propagate. They do not use any electronic gadgets which cuts down on the numerous problems these gadgets present. Newspapers and magazines build loyal fan followings within a short time span. Leading dailies over the world have readership in millions with print journalists being the main contributors in garnering such large reader bases. Apart from journalists and publishers whose careers are completely dependent on the print media...

Traditional Media Marketing: Use of Print Media

...| | | | Traditional Media Project: Print Advertising Print media has been an effective form of advertising for many years. In 1836, a French newspaper, La Presse, first charged for advertisements to lower the print price. From most historical accounts, this is considered the first occurrence of print advertising. Print advertising is generally defined as any form of media advertising that uses materially printed media, such as newspapers and magazines, to reach its target market. Today, print advertising is still valuable due to the captive nature and segmentation of age and income demographics among readers. To make advertising successful, the message has to be understood and remembered. Print advertising accomplishes this by incorporating advertisements into the flow of the section and capitalizing on the individual’s focus on the printed material. For example, today’s fashion magazines, like Vogue, are loaded with advertisements that tend to outnumber the content pages. Due to the incorporation of the full page advertisements, the reader tends to enjoy the paid content and it’s even a contributing factor for purchasing and reading the material. The other benefit of print advertising is the focus that a reader has when viewing the content. With the increasing level of distractions with personal electronic devices, printed material has a unique advantage with fixed content that the reader can focus on. This is true because once the user has...

The Rise of Digital Journalism Collapse of Print Media

...Running head: THE RISE OF DIGITAL JOURNALISM COLLAPSE OF PRINT MEDIA 1 The Democratization of Journalism Alan B Egge University of Maryland University College The internet has fundamentally changed how news is distributed by democratizing the creation and consumption of news. It has allowed news to be published and read by anybody at little to no cost. Print media has struggled to hold their own against a ubiquitous and often free competitor. Advertising revenue for the ten largest newspaper companies peaked at $48.7 Billion in 2000 and has since plummeted to $23.9 Billion in 2012. The 2012 figure includes revenue from digital versions of the papers but this adaptation has not stymied the decline. On the surface, these numbers suggest that Neil Postman's claim in Amusing Ourselves to Death, that America was fulfilling Aldous Huxley's vision of a world where, “no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As [Huxley] saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacity to think.” (xix) Newspapers have historically been the most important technology to make one think so is does their decline spell our decline into an isolated, apathetic dystopia? To the contrary, I believe the collapse of the newspaper and the rise of internet journalism is creating a better informed and more socially aware society. Digital media is doing precisely the opposite of what Huxley, Postman and much of the...

Problem 1 Print Media Advertising (Pma)

...Problem 1 Print Media Advertising (PMA) Click Link Below To Buy: http://hwcampus.com/shop/problem-1-print-media-advertising-pma/ Problem 1 Print Media Advertising (PMA) has been given a contract to market Buzz Cola via newspaper ads in a major southern newspaper. Full-page ads in the weekday editions (Monday through Saturday) cost $2000, whereas on Sunday a full-page ad costs $8000. Daily circulation of newspaper is 30,000 on weekdays and 80,000 on Sundays. PMA has been given a $40,000 advertising budget for the month of August. The experienced advertising executives at PMA feel that both weekday and Sunday newspaper ads are important; hence they wish to run the equivalent of at least eight weekday and at least two Sunday ads during August. (Assume that a fractional ad would simply mean that a smaller ad is placed on one of the days; that is, 3.5 ads would mean three full-page ads and one half-page ad. Also, assume that smaller ads reduce exposure and costs proportionately.) This August has 26 weekdays and 5 Sundays. The objective is to determine the optimal placement of ads by PMA in the newspaper during August so as to maximize the cumulative total exposure (as measured by circulation) for the month of August. a) Formulate the linear programming model for the problem. b) Use the Graphical method to find the optimal solution.
