Determinism is the belief that your future is fixed or determined, either by what you have genetically inherited or by your social environment and experience. The alternative to determinism is choice and interaction this is the belief that people can take control of their own lives through the choices they make. It is sometimes referred to as the ‘free will’ viewpoint.
Genetic factors and disorders.
Each cell in the body contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. One chromosome from each pair is inherited from your mother and one is inherited from your father. The chromosomes contain the genes you inherit from your parents. There may be different forms of the same gene. These different forms are called alleles. There are different genes that determine your eye colour and your hair colour. The different forms of genes are caused by mutations in the DNA code.
Genetic disorders are depending on certain factors these are; what genes you inherit of your parents, whether the gene for that condition is dominant or recessive and their environment, including any treatment they may receive. An example of a genetic disorder is Sickle Cell Anaemia; Sickle cell anaemia is a disease where your body produces abnormally shaped red blood cells. The cells are shaped like a crescent or sickle used to cut wheat. Sickle cell anaemia is caused by a genetic mutation that affects normal development of red blood cells. Symptoms of sickle cell anaemia can have a significant impact on quality of life. Potential complications can be life-threatening.
Biological
Biological influences before birth, this includes the thing that the mother of the child does while she is pregnant that would affect their babies before being born, could be if the mother decides to smoke, take drugs, have a bad diet or drink large amounts of alcohol at one time. For example if the mother drinks during pregnancy then this would have a negative effect on the babies development and could cause it to have foetal alcohol syndrome. A child born with foetal alcohol syndrome can be smaller; they could also have learning disabilities and heart defects.
German measles infection (rubella) causes birth defects if women are infected during the first few months of pregnancy. It can also pass through a pregnant woman's bloodstream to infect her unborn child causing birth defects; blindness, deafness, heart defects and mental retardation. It's a generally mild disease in children; the primary medical danger of rubella is the infection of pregnant women because it can cause congenital rubella syndrome in developing babies.
Environment
Many things in the environment can affect our health. Hazardous substances found in the air, soil and water can originate from a variety of sources, such as agricultural and industrial activities, mining operations, landfills and leaky underground storage tanks. There are also three types of problems that can also affect this. These include; social problems, discipline problems and educational problems.
There may also be family dysfunction in the house you live in which may cause conflict in what you are doing. These dysfunctions maybe your parents splitting up or arguing all the time, may also be because your parents are over protective so if one parent says no you would go to the other one and if they say yes this would cause conflict with each other. Your parents may be physically or mentally ill this means they may need looking after which causes you not to go out as much or become behind in school work.
Socioeconomic
Socio-economic factors, is basically two things: (1) Financial resources or income, and (2) level of education. Housing and education can be affected by social class and the income of a family. In the UK- everyone has access to the National Health Service, regardless of socio-economic status. One's income and corresponding occupation are factors that can contribute to socioeconomic status. An career in medicine, for example, places a person in a higher income bracket, while also making that same person part of a social class of doctors, nurses and other medical-profession peers. In society, we often are judged by what we do and what we earn. When getting to know someone, the question of what we do for a living often is among the first addressed.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle factors affecting development can be controlled by us (unlike genetic for example). We can ‘choose’ to make positive lifestyle choices such as eating healthily, exercising, and relaxing. Or we can ‘choose’ to smoke, eat fast food, be a couch potato and drink alcohol. Each of these lifestyle factors can affect our development. Lifestyle factors have had a dramatic impact on general health and the capacity to reproduce. Lifestyle issues such as smoking and obesity can affect general health and well-being. For example, smoking increases an individual's risk of cardiovascular disease and adverse consequences associated with obesity include increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers. There is an increasing body of evidence that lifestyle factors can impact on reproductive performance. For example, studies have demonstrated that smoking in women significantly decreases the chance of conception
