Would you have fired Walker? Why or why not? In 3-5 paragraphs discuss the pros and con of your decision.

The audit profession relies heavily on the integrity of the professional in order to instill confidence in their work. The importance of integrity is something that should be known to any accounting graduate. In this case, Walker not only obtained her bachelor’s degree, but did so with a high grade point average. Walker then should have been aware about the consequences of her lie. Walker did not only fail to see an issue with her lie, but also had no problem lying to her supervisor. Therefore, Walker demonstrated a lack of integrity and should be fired. In addition, in the audit profession it is important for management to be able to trust that their employees are performing honest, fair and accurate work. If I were Vaughn or Roberts, this would raise a red flag to question the honesty of Walker’s assignments. If she was willing to lie about something so small like having taken the CPA, there is no guarantee that she would not lie about more important matters. Having to question Walker’s honesty in all the assignments she completes would lead to an inefficient working environment, which can have detrimental effects to an audit. Furthermore, firing Walker would not only provide an ease of mind to her supervisors, save the audit several hours of reperforming her work, but also allow them to avoid a possible lawsuit which could ruin the firm’s credibility. While it may seem that firing Walker is a great idea, there are some things that should be considered. In firing Walker the firm would be losing a very strong, well-rounded candidate. Walker did not only graduate with a high grade point average but was heavily involved in extracurricular activities. In the little time she started working with the firm, she also managed to impress her supervisor and

While I don’t condone the use of white lies to protect oneself, Walker’s omission is of a personal nature and as such, not necessary to the firms wellbeing. In opposition to this view, an auditor’s livelihood relies heavy on the notion that they are pure and worthy of trust. In that regard, the situation definitely requires a deeper conversation. I believe that I would have allowed her to give an explanation, as to where her lines drawn and what information she believes to be trivial. In my opinion, not everyone in this great country thinks or perceives every day, common place, events the same. What is typical in certain geographical areas may not be so mundane in others. The most important question that I would ask is, “Do you believe that what you have done is wrong”? Her interpretation of her actions may indeed be that it was her personal decision and her right to share whether she had taken and passed the test. She may have in her mind, decided that until she had passed the test; it was not the firm’s business as to her personal affairs. I am of the opinion that all are innocent until proven guilty. With that said, she would have had a chance to defend herself before all that were questioning her.
