1. Discuss how Kathy lacked sufficient emotional intelligence to be effective in her new project manager assignment.

Kathy did not take time to learn the culture of the people with whom she was working. Her focus was to complete the task, for her personal gain. She created the problems by implementing the same procedures all across the board, as was practiced in North America, and was insensitive towards the people of Southeast Asia and their culture. “…her team, made up of local residents to change their work habits to accommodate her expectations.” (Pinto, 2010)
“She was highly self-motivated”. Self-motivated, is good in terms of knowing what is needed to be done and to execute, but not at the cost of driving others completely insane and run down, “by forcing extra work hours, or by ignoring weekend breaks, or the around the clock work approach.” (Pinto, 2010)
Also, there was no personal connection with her team, which is, getting to know them. That being said, she may have hindered the likeability of the crew feeling comfortable enough to explain when things did not go well for them.

2. Of the various dimensions of emotional intelligence, which dimension(s) did she appear to lack most? What evidence can you cite to support this contention?
Kathy seemed to lacked self- awareness and empathy. Even though she was organized and highly self-motivated, it appears that ‘people skills’ was not her strongest suit. She did not exhibit the capability of interacting with her team to the full extent of having a relationship where they may come to her with issues that bothered them, work related issues, that is. This in turn affected the team’s behavior toward the work and Kathy. “Rather than directly her, however, team members began a campaign of passive aggressive resistance to her leadership.” (Pinto, 2010)
