Essay #1 Prompt
(1000-1400 Words)

Please note: I do not read any paper that does not reach the minimum number of words. Essays which do not rise to the word count receive an automatic failure for the assignment. The word count only includes the following: the title and the body of the paper.

Directions:

• Choose one of the following topics and write a 1000-1400 word paper (double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font) based on your own analysis of the work.

• You are NOT to use outside sources EXCEPT class notes/discussion and editorial material from the Anthology of American Literature, which must be cited using MLA style. (The Bible may be used if applicable.)

• You are expected to support your paper using references to the primary text(s), cited in MLA style (use line numbers for poetry, page numbers for prose). Formal lecture notes given by the professor must be cited as such.

• Papers must be submitted to Safe Assign on BlackBoard by 11:59pm.

Topics:

1. Demonstrate how Jonathan Edwards exemplifies American culture in one of his writings.

2. Explain how either Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson reflect(s) a Christian worldview.

3. Show how one of any (from the works covered in class) of the eighteenth-century writers covered in class exhibit the literary, cultural, and/or historical characteristics of their age. When writing this paper, narrow your focus to one historical/cultural event, figure, trend, or invention to ensure a focused and succinct thesis instead of a broad and ill-defined one.

4. Write an analysis of one of the arguments about racism made by Phyllis Wheatley and then evaluate her position.

5. Examine the how the FORM (i.e., poetry, prose, literary devices, etc.) of any of the works covered this semester contributes to the CONTENT of the work(s).

Greatest Success

...As we sit in the theatre’s lobby at the University of Illinois in Springfield, the nerves and tension begin to settle in all of us. Most were either playing cards or gossiping about the other shows. The rest of us were quietly thinking about the fate of our show. As our coach came out of the office, we headed outside. He holds up a small piece of paper and flips it over. We all start screaming, hugging each other. My greatest success is being the stage manager for a state winning theater program. “Hey, Tom you ready for the play this year?” My coach Mr. Wargin says as I walk into the little theatre. “Of course! It’s my senior year, it is going to be the best year for us, I promise!” As the other stage managers and I stand on the stage taking attendance and pass out the calendar of practices and events, Mr. Wargin tells us a game plan. “We meet every Tuesday and Thursday; occasionally we’ll have a Saturday where we work all day. We’ll use those Saturdays for when we are falling behind and need to finish big projects that we can’t finish during the school week. We provide lunch if you come, and it is greatly appreciated if you do.” He continues to say, “We have two sets to build, one for each play, and we have about a month and a half to complete both”. He explains that our contest play is “The Picnic” and we are going to build two houses, with faux grass, something we have never done before. Our other show, the group interpretation, is “A League of Their Own”. This show...

Exercise 1-2 Verbal Prompts

...Mary wants to perform an exercise of her choice at least twice a week using verbal prompts (1-2) at 100% accuracy. She had a success rate of 100% in November, 100% in December, and 50% in January. While Mary met her desired percentage level on two occasions, she fell short of her desired frequency of exercise each month of the quarter. In November, Mary only performed an exercise activity during one week of the month. She was able to choose and complete the activity using only 1-2 verbal prompts which resulted in a high percentage score. Mary's exercise of choice for the month consisted of walking around the store while shopping. In December, Mary successfully completed one exercise activity during two of the four weeks. Her percentage score remained high due to successfully meeting her goal of choosing and completing the exercise using only 1-2 verbal prompts. Mary again chose to exercise by walking around different stores and the community while shopping. In January, Mary's percentage score dropped due to refusing to exercise on two occasions. She did however successfully choose and complete one exercise activity during two of the four months. Mary continued the trend of choosing to exercise by walking around different stores in the community....

You Decide

...Choices and Consequences The Number 1 choice is Jerry, the father, offers the best utilitarianism of hope and use of his life to help his children and family and the best longevity of life given he has essentially been healthy except for the damage done to his heart from the Steroids some 20 to 30 years earlier. His wife and children play no part in the decision in him getting the heart. It all has to do with his health, and ability to live a life after he receives it. And also some other facts which should be considered like life expectancy, importance, age etc. when deciding on whom to donate the heart to. He’s cause for damage to the heart was the steroids, of which he was unaware of the consequences of taking the steroids at the time he took so there wasn’t any sort of health irresponsibility known otherwise. His chances to live 10-15 more years are very high so it’s one point investing in him. He has a family to take care of, wife and the 3 kids who he has to support till they are on their feet and so forth. He also has been a good supporting father as he’s already being supporting their dreams career wise and the future. So my first choice with all confidence would be Jerry. The number 2 choice is Ozzie because as LONG as he does not get back on his old ways HE does hold out some hope on society as a whole as long he does NOT revert back and does good in society by helping out and he no longer does any drugs - he really can have a useful and a prosperous and productive...
