Galileo Galilei, a mathematics professor, was very well known for improving the telescope and using it to observe the Solar System. He supported the Copernican theory. By doing this he got in trouble for going against the Church.

Exchange:
*Copernicus theorized that the universe was heliocentric, meaning that the planets revolve around the sun, however there were several faults in his theory. In Galileo’s writing Dialogues he expressed that Copernicans theory was logical and agreed with it.

Telescopes in Astronomy

...Peering out beyond the confines of the Earth was a daydream for early scientists. Staring into the heavens from the Earth limited the scientific community’s ability to study the cosmic bodies above the Earth’s surface. As curiosity grew to explore the Sun, moon, stars and far-reaching corners of the universe, creativity was sparked leading to the development of tools like a telescope to assist scientists with examining outer space and its contents. The development of the telescope began in the hands of a Dutch lens maker, Hans Lippershey. Lippershey developed a device consisting of a tube and a lens allowing the user to view objects up close. Galileo Galilei expanded upon Lippershey’s design creating the modern day telescope using a concave lens. Galileo used his telescope view the items in the night sky including the Milky Way. Galileo revealed that the Earth was not at the center of the universe that was a contrasting view from previous scholars. The development of the telescope has lead to significant discoveries including the moon's effect on weather patterns on Earth and in space black holes, stars' lifecycles and galaxies beyond the Milky Way to name a few. The ability to study the Sun has given scholars the ability to determine the age of the Sun, planets and stars in the night sky. The first telescope's original design, consisting of a tube and lens, gave the viewer the first glimpse into the space. As interest in astronomy grew in both the scientific and philosophical...

Astronomy is believed to be one of the things that unlocked the early history of knowledge. The Catholic Church believed the theory of Ptolemy, geocentric, wherein the planets, stars, and sun are revolving around the earth. But according Nicolaus Copernicus, all the planets, including the earth, are revolving around the sun or namely heliocentric. By 1632, an Italian scientist and mathematician Galileo Galilei published a book comparing the heliocentric and geocentric theory and said that the theory of Copernicus is more accurate. Because of this, Galileo Galilei was given an inquisition by the Catholic Church. Sir Isaac Newton from England explained all the things, from planets to laws of gravity at inertia. ...GRE Analytical Writing ISSUE Essay Topic - 1 "Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time." GRE AWA Analytical Writing ISSUE Essay Sample Solution – 1 “The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” ― Niels Bohr[->0] This is a proven fact that truth is the initial stage of progress. However, it is also believed that truth always starts away from the traditions and conventions. Therefore, people consider truths as attacks upon their beliefs, which people are following from ages. Truth also means some new facts that are unknown to us. People do not want to deviate from the facts, which they have learnt from their ancestors, and it is true to say that shedding ones dogmas is often difficult. They feel that it is an attack on their wisdom. If we look at the history of the world, we will find many examples where truth has generated commotions in the society. Different people have different views about the existence of God, life after death and origin of earth etc. For example, people took a long time to accept that the earth is round. Religious leaders and clergymen opposed this idea as it was against what they were teaching. Similarly, when Polish astronomer, Copernicus discovered that the earth goes round the sun and not vice versa, he was opposed by churches for many years. In fact he and his supporters were...
