Psy211/Emotional Responses

...Why do certain foods or smells elicit emotional responses? Every person has an emotional response to one or more particular foods. The response may be negative or positive depending on the situation that may have occurred with the food present. For instance a person may perk up while smelling coffee or someone may feel nauseated by just looking at a hamburger. These reactions are conditioned responses (CR) toward conditioned stimulus’ (CS) that were previously unconditioned. A conditioned response is a learned reflexive response to a conditioned stimulus. Before someone has the reaction to perk up from the scent of coffee, they first must go through a conditioning phase to associate coffee with feeling energetic. This is also called classical conditioning: the basic learning process that involves repeatedly pairing a neutral stimulus with a response-producing stimulus until the neutral stimulus elicits the same response. The unconditioned stimulus is coffee and the unconditioned response is energy to wake up or perk up for the day. During each morning a person may groggily get out of bed and begin brewing coffee. He or she pours a cup and begin to awaken more from the ingested caffeine. If done on a constant basis that person will begin associating the tastes and smells of coffee (CS) with being energetic (CR); even though the effects of caffeine takes 20 minutes to begin working. Another conditioned response could be feeling nauseated at the sight or smell...

The Fear of Bees

...The Fear of Bees Adam Putnam PSY211 November 6, 2013 Laurie Ellington The Fear of Bees The fear of bees is one that many individuals share. Here, we will look at how ones fear of bees may have developed. We will attempt to look at how this fear could have been learned through classical conditioning by attempting to identify the unconditioned stimulus, the unconditioned response, the conditioned stimulus, and the conditioned response. We will see how the behavior could have been learned through operant conditioning by describing the behavior, consequence, and reinforcement. Finally, we will discuss how the fear could have been learned through observational learning. Classical Conditioning Classical conditioning is when some sort of stimulus draws out a behavior. There is a natural stimulus, or unconditioned stimulus that elicits an unconditioned response, basically a person’s natural reaction to something (Hockenbury D. H. & Hockenbury S. E,  2014). Then there is a conditioned stimulus that in turn produces a conditioned response. This essentially means that something is introduced between the natural stimulus and subject which causes the behavior to change. I chose this topic because a bee stung my two-year-old daughter not long ago. Before she was stung, she had no apparent fear of any kind of insects. She was strapped in a swing at a friend’s house when a carpenter bee flew down the swing onto her legs. When the bee stung her leg, she reached down,...

Personality Theories Paper

...Neo Freudian’s Psychoanalytic Theory VS. B.F Skinner’s Behaviorist Approach Cion Castille Psy211 Asharaf Esmail March 12, 2013 How Personality traits are passed down or learned has always been a questionable and a confusing topic when it comes to actually proving your reasons. There seems to be many different theorists that feel that personality comes from different ways. Some even support their theories in such a logical manner that it leaves on the fence. Exploring different theorist showed me many different interpretations of the effecting factors that determine personality traits. The Important pioneer Sigmund Freudian (Freud) and his, Psychoanalytic theory. Learning Theorist B.F. Skinner (Skinner) and his, Behaviorist Approach which was among my interest and very plausible was. In both of these cases the Theorist used great examples from everyday life to support their theorist and beliefs. Sigmund Freudian introduced his Psychoanalytic Theory in the early 1900s. In this theory he stated that conscious experiences are not the only or for that fact the greatest influence on our personality traits. Freud argued that the unconscious experiences that a person goes through also plays a big part if not most of developing personality traits. With this belief Freud focused all of his studies in this matter on the unconscious factors in a person’s life such as; memories, knowledge, beliefs, feelings, drive, and built in instincts. Freud stated that the unconscious functions...
