BACKGROUND PAPER

ON

PYSCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS

Psychological Operations use strategical tactics to ensure that the enemy is deceived in some way. These tactics, such as conveying thoughts, emotions, or motives are used widely throughout the military, and even in civilian operations.

The Air force specifically uses Psychological Operations to accomplish missions, whether the means are used within cyberspace or during combat missions. The aim is to weaken the enemy in hopes of surrender.

Early acts of psychological operations can be traced back to China, 2000 years ago. Chinese military strategist, Sun Tzu, stated, “All warfare is based on deception. Therefore, when capable of attacking, feign incapacity; when active in moving troops, feign

...advantage, grey propaganda is the mixture of lies and truth and black propaganda consists of largely but not total lies. All these types were exploited upon implementation of propaganda at different levels through different tactics. Psychological operations which were executed as forms of propaganda involved planned use of communication through words, symbols and actions to influence the behaviour of the targeted audiences and achieve set objectives. The government’s use of propaganda warfare was prompted by a number of reasons which ranged from economic, political, social and military factors. It is worth noting here that, the tempo and conduct of the war varied from one locality to the other depending on the terrain and proximity to strategical areas like borders, transport networks and close to government’s administrative offices. The study is presented in three chapters. The first chapter outlines the reasons for the introduction of propaganda warfare in Chilonga in 1970. It majors on the motives behind implementation of propaganda warfare before the intensification of the war in the area. Various tactics used to execute propaganda and strategic roles served by different types of propaganda machines is the main thrust of chapter two. Different tactics were employed to execute propaganda because it was dynamic responses to new situations that arose...

The Strategic Positioning of Coca Cola

...The Marketing Review, 2003, 3, 289-309 www.themarketingreview.com Demetris Vrontis1 and Iain Sharp2 Manchester Metropolitan University Business School and Legal and General The Strategic Positioning of Coca-Cola in their Global Marketing Operation Examines how Coca-Cola has strategically positioned it self within the world’s soft drinks market. Given that they operate in over 200 countries, they are faced with a clear choice of whether to standardise their product offerings globally and reap the potential benefits of economies of scale, adapt their offerings to a particular market (which may facilitate increased market specific penetration), or adopt an integrated approach utilising both approaches simultaneously (Vrontis’ AdaptStand approach). There has been much literature written regarding the external and often uncontrollable factors which may impact upon a firms positioning strategy; this paper looks at these externalities and the internal controllables in order to derive a ‘best fit’ strategic and tactical approach. Moreover, this paper looks at the strategic international positioning of Coca-Cola by utilising a number of models. Why Are We so Easily Persuaded, Even to Do Silly or Immoral Things?

...Humans are persuaded by these entities and the herd because it is seemingly the easiest way to avoid social exile; we become admirers of the herd and our enslavers, paradoxically the more profound thinkers will also dislike them. To emphasise the fact that social fulfillment is the most potent, and insatiable persuader, the notion of advertising is entirely based on this human need. However, it must be noted that the core of the ‘social fulfillment’ theory of persuasion has a notable pessimistic bias; humans are not persuaded as much by communal connectivity as they are by the fear of societal death. This essay will explain how social fulfillment and the fear of social death form the basis of human action and submissiveness. From a psychological perspective, the notion of persuasion is emphasised through the Milgram experiment. The ethics of the...

...A "strategic extension campaign" (SEC) methodology developed by FAO has been introduced in Africa, the Near East, Asia and Latin America. This methodology emphasizes the importance of people's participation (i.e., intended beneficiaries such as fields extension workers and small farmers) in strategic planning, systematic management, and field implementation of agricultural extension and training programmes (see Fig. 2-4). Its extension strategies and messages are specifically developed and tailored based on the results of a participatory problem identification process on the causes or reasons of farmers' non-adoption, or inappropriate practices, of a given recommended agricultural technology or innovation. The SEC technology transfer and application approach is needs-based, demand-driven, and has a problem-solving orientation. The Strategic Extension Campaign (SEC) is not an alternative to the conventional extension programme or activity. SEC is, and should be, an integral part of the programmes of an agricultural extension service. The effectiveness and efficiency of such a service could be increased due to SEC's emphasis on its problem-solving orientation, participatory planning approach, intensive extension personnel training, multi-media materials development, and extension manage meet, monitoring and evaluation procedures. Its activities should be carried out by extension personnel and to support the Ministry of Agriculture's policies, strategies and priority programmes....
