Public Sector Employment Shelia Parker PPA 405 November 5, 2012 Instructor: Patrick Norris

Have you or anyone you know looked for a job recently? It is extremely hard finding a job and given the state the economy is in it is even harder to find a job. There was a time when one looked for a job that offered stability, now people are just looking for a job. If you were to lose your job how difficult do you think it would be for you to find a new job?

When seeking out employment there are some things to keep in mind that an employer may look for in a potential job candidate. Knowing what an employer may look for can give you an advantage in the job interview. Most employers’ value education but look for stability and maturity in potential candidates. Employer’s watch to see how a candidate completes the application, the behavior in the interview, they evaluate how mature the interview questions are answered. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, many potential employers’ will ask questions to see how you have handled particular situations in the past.

Employers’ want to know if they hire you will you be an asset to their organization or a liability. Employers’ cannot afford to invest in the resources to hire and train a candidate if that candidate is not looking for a future with the employer. One of the ways they look for this is in the application. They look to see if you have longevity at your previous employer. Employers need people who demonstrate enthusiasm and energy. They look for people who are willing to take the initiative in their job. Being creative is very important because employees often have to respond to sudden changes and obstacles.
