A. University of Northern Iowa: The University of Northern Iowa was founded because of two influential forces of the nineteenth century. Initially UNI was built for the safekeeping of orphans and Civil War veterans during the time. Secondly, Iowa needed a public center to prepare new teachers. In 1876, when the orphanage was no longer required, legislators Edward G. Miller and H. C. Hemenway commenced the Iowa State “Normal” School. The school's first building was opened in 1869 and was referred to as the Central Hall. The building included classrooms along with living facilities for most of the students. It was also the home to the college's first principal, James Cleland Gilchrist. The building was the heart and soul of the school, allowing students to study two-year, three-year, and four-year course degrees.
