Qantas airlines is one of the world’s oldest airlines, number three to be exact. They have been operating commercial flights for nearly a century. In the last ninety-five years there have been several mergers, acquisitions, a World War, advances in technology, name changes and other moves to diversify and expand the company. What started from such humble beginnings has grown into a large multinational corporation with holdings in various travel related industries across the board.
Qantas Airlines was founded in 1920 during the dawn of the golden age of aviation. Two veteran officers, W Hudson Fysh and Paul McGinness, of the Australian Flying Corps joined forces after World War I to help advance aviation in Australia. They were hired by the …show more content…
Fysh and McGinness employed their former flight sergeant Arthur Baird as their aircraft mechanic. Fysh, McGinness, McMaster and Baird are recognized as the four major contributors to the founding of Qantas Airlines. Something that began as a joy riding and air demonstration project quickly grew into Australia’s first full service air carrier. In the early years they operated mostly as an air taxi service while occasionally carrying mail or other small packages. Half of the company’s flying boats were lost, either shot down by Japanese Zeroes or turned up missing en route to their destination. “More than half of the fleet was commissioned for war service by the Australian Government” (Qantas.com.au, n.d.). Qantas crews also flew many resupply missions in conjunction with the RAAF in New Guinea along the Kokoda Track. Perhaps the most important missions of the Qantas crews through the entirety of World War II were those to keep the lines of communication between Australia and its western Allies
