Qatar World Cup 2022 Bid With the 2010 FIFA World Cup in our rear view mirror, soccer fans are still singing the catchy theme song “It’s time for Africa” by Shakira, but who will it be time for in 2022? According to FIFA rotation, since Brazil is hosting in 2014 and Europe in 2018, either Asia or North America will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The U.S., bidding on behalf of North America has already had the opportunity to host the 1994 World Cup, unlike Qatar bidding on behalf of Asia and the Middle East, but is Qatar capable of hosting this magnitude of an event? The answer is yes! Qatar has experience in hosting large sporting events, has the financial assets to make them possible, developed cooling technology to reduce temperatures in stadiums, will have improved infrastructure and more than adequate housing for teams and visitors alike. All of these factors are elements that FIFA looks at when choosing host countries for World Cups. The first factor FIFA considers when choosing a host country is whether or not it has the ability to organize and put on an event like a World Cup. Qatar impressed many with how it was able to organize and accommodate the 2006 Asian Games which included more than thirty events for men and women. The way in which thousands of volunteers were directed and utilized for this event is still unrivaled in the Middle East. Sepp Blatter, president of FIFA, endorsed the idea of Qatar being the host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup based on the country’s infrastructure and capability to orchestrate the 2006 Asian Games (Rhys, 2010). When it comes to soccer, Qatar hosted the 1988 AFC Asian Cup, the 1995 FIFA U-20 world cup, and is due to host the 2011 AFC Asian Cup affirming Qatar’s love of soccer and capability of hosting soccer events. Qatar placed a bid to host the 2018 World Cup, but was rejected because of the extremely high temperatures players would have to endure during the months of June and July reaching highs of 113 degrees Fahrenheit making it the first country to be rejected based on climate issues (Vesty, 2009). Instead of accepting rejection, the bid committee was determined to find a solution to this issue and bid again to host the 2022 World Cup. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the 2022 Qatar bid chairman, is working with several engineers to develop technology that will counter the affects of the harsh summer heat by 68 degrees Fahrenheit making climate no longer a concern for players (Bisson, 2010). Qatar also plans to spend $42.9 billion on building new roads and upgrading the existing road network since the current system could not handle the major influx in traffic caused by fans and players alike traveling to and from matches (Roscoe, 2010). Three billion dollars has also been initially invested in the Qatar Rail network that will cover 211 miles, with four major lines, and each train to have an expected capacity of 400 to 800 passengers which should alleviate traffic from the roads (Roscoe, 2010). The Qatar Rail network is also expected to be linked to the proposed GCC train network which will allow easy travel among the six gulf countries of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates allowing fans from the region easy access to Qatar (Roscoe, 2010). Doha International Airport is also undergoing an expansion that will increase its capacity to 50 million people per day to be completed by 2012 which will allow fans and players from foreign countries to get to and from Qatar easily (Roscoe, 2010) . Construction on the Qatar-Bahrain causeway, a 28 mile bridge connecting Qatar to Bahrain, is scheduled to begin in July of this year and be completed by 2015 which will allow Bahraini fans to drive to Qatar alleviating traffic from Doha International Airport (Roscoe, 2010). All of these improvements to the infrastructure are meant to allow FIFA World Cup fans and participants easier access to the country and ease of travel within Qatar. FIFA requires host countries to provide 60,000 hotel rooms to house everyone involved with the event, but according to Hassan Abdulla al Thawadi, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid, 80,000 to 90,000 rooms have been offered to FIFA by the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid (Roscoe, 2010). This may seem like a lofty goal, but in preparing for the Asian Games, 30,000 rooms were provided for participants and they were erected in the span of two years proving that housing issues will not be a disqualifying factor in Qatar’s bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The last factor that FIFA considers when choosing a host country for a World Cup is whether or not that country has enough disposable income to implement the previously mentioned requirements. Qatar, being one of the wealthiest countries in the Middle East due to the rising oil prices and natural gas sales, has more disposable income than would ever be spent on the improvements made to its infrastructure, expansion in its lodging capacity and development of stadiums causing Qatar to have nothing to lose and everything to gain from hosting a World Cup. The potential tourism this event will create will put Qatar on the map economically as being a favored tourist site in the region. The Middle East hasn’t had the opportunity to host a FIFA World Cup even though there are millions of football fans in the region who are waiting to be able to attend a live match and willing to pay extensive amounts of money to do so. Qatar is the best hosting candidate for the region because of its proposed infrastructure improvements, its large amount of disposable income, the experience the country has in hosting other large sporting events, the housing it plans to provide, and the climate control to be installed in the proposed stadiums. Qatar is also centrally located, easily accessible from the Arabian Gulf and the rest of the world, and can boast uncompromising safety and security to all. Works Cited

...The Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup bid is the successful proposal from the government of Qatar to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar, with a population of 1.69 million people, will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup.[1] Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, son of the present Emir of Qatar, was the chairman of the bid committee.[2] Qatar promoted their hosting of the tournament as representing the Arab World, and has drawn support from across the member states of the Arab League. They also positioned their bid as an opportunity to bridge the gap between the Arab World and the West.[3] Qatar gave a feel of what the World Cup would be like by holding a friendly match between Brazil and Argentina.[4] Furthermore, people coming from different nations visited Qatar for this match and strengthened the image Qatar would depict of their interest in the World Cup 2022. Additionally, Qatar hosted the 2011 Asian Cup which had the lowest attendance for the cup in 11 years, since the tournament was held in Lebanon[citation needed]. It was considered a warm-up for 2022. President of FIFA Sepp Blatter endorsed the idea of having a World Cup in the Arab World, saying in April 2010, "The Arabic world deserves a World Cup. They have 22 countries and have not had any opportunity to organize the tournament." Blatter also praised Qatar's progress, "When I was first in Qatar there were 400,000 people here and now there are 1.6 million. In terms of infrastructure, when you are...

Qatar 2022

...it was announced that Qatar would host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, after the FIFA Executive Committee voted in a secret ballot in Zurich. The government of Qatar’s successful proposal bid defeated four other candidates to stage the 2022 edition of the world’s greatest sporting event: Australia, Korea Republic, Japan and the United States of America. Qatar, with a population of 1.69 million people will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup. Consequently, Qatar is the smallest nation, both by relative population and by area, ever to have been awarded the tournament hosting privilege. The Qatar bid was emphasized as the only one representing the Arab World (which has never hosted a World Cup prior) and positioned their bid as an opportunity to bridge the gap between the Arab World and the West. Their hosting of the 2006 Asian Games as well as the 2011 Asian Cup proved to legitimize their capabilities of hosting the tournament. Further, its superior financial capabilities were evident in their proposals for new stadia and infrastructure. While the decision on 2 December 2010 brought delight to Qatar, it inversely brought concern and controversy in the West. A number of rival candidates, western groups and media outlets have expressed concern over the suitability of Qatar to host the event, with regard to climatic conditions, interpretations of human rights, press freedom and allegations of corruption. Climate: Winter World Cup? The World Cup is traditionally held in...

Fifa Corruption Paper

...was a very respectable organization at one time, but that time is now over. This affects international business because there are currently 209 countries within FIFA. FIFA has a far reaching impact because soccer is the most popular sport in the world. To better understand why and how FIFA became so corrupt, I’d like to lead with some background on the history of FIFA and its biggest members. FIFA stands for The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (English translation: International Federation of Association Football), and is the governing body of association football, futsal and beach soccer. FIFA is responsible for the organization of football’s major international tournaments, notably the World Cup which commenced in 1930 and the Women’s World Cup which began in 1991. FIFA was founded in 1904 to oversee international competition among the national associations of Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. FIFA is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland and consists of 209 national associations. The countries range from Brunei and Tanzania to Brazil and Costa Rica. Member countries must each also be members of one of the six regional confederations into which the world is divided: Africa, Asia, Europe, North & Central America and the Caribbean, Oceania and South America. FIFA does not control the rules of soccer, but it is responsible for the organization of...

...proud of what we have done here, it has been a fantastic event, from an economic and a unity perspective," says Lee-Anne Bac, director at Grant Thornton Strategic Solutions in Johannesburg. "Hosting the 2010 World Cup will radically alter the landscape for tourism in southern Africa. There has also been a reputational boost for South Africa that can help bring inward investment and visitors. South Africa has been rebranding as a tourist destination and as one based around the development of a global sports event business model." "So we really believe there will be a tourist momentum moving forward," says Ms Bac. "The tourism structures we developed for 2010 will stay in place, and the aim is now to attract further events, conferences and conventions to the country. 'Good returns' And many, including President Jacob Zuma, also envisage a lasting positive effect on the economy through the recent development of national infrastructure. And Ms Bac says she has already noticed one potential economic benefit from the investment in infrastructure. "As a citizen of South Africa it has made commercial life so much easier with the new roads and transport links, with less time wasted travelling and getting around," she says. The infrastructure legacy of the World Cup also includes stadiums, airports, and information technology. "We can safely say that we have good returns on our investment, which includes 33bn rand spent on transport infrastructure, telecommunications...

Qatar Worls Cup

...In December 2010, Qatar won its bid to host the 2022 World Cup. In preparation, Qatar will spend an estimated US$100 billion on infrastructure, including a new airport, roads, hotels and stadiums. As Qatar has begun building the infrastructure to host the World Cup, worker advocacy groups and human rights groups have sounded alarm about whether all the workers needed to build the infrasturcture would receive adequate workplace protections. Living and working conditions for some migrants in Qatar are appalling. Long hours in the blazing heat, low pay and squalid dormitories, are a daily ordeal for thousands - and they cannot leave without an exit visa. A last year stated Nepalese migrant workers were dying A report by Qatar’s government found 964 deaths of migrants from India, Nepal and Bangladesh in 2014. at a rate of one every two days and attributed those deaths to construction of the stadium. The Nepalese embassy in Qatar reported that 400 Nepalese workers had died working on World Cup projects since 2010. The Indian embassy reported that 500 Indian workers had died in Qatar since 2012. Whether the cause of death is labelled a work accidents, heart attack (brought on by the life threatening effects of heat stress) or diseases from squalid living conditions, the root cause is the same – working conditions “We know that people who work long hours in high temperatures are highly vulnerable to fatal heat strokes, so obviously these figures continue to cause alarm,” said...
