Overview BIMS is an organization that offers housekeeping and foodservices to massive companies and businesses. The biggest problem they are facing is the turnover rate; which has increased in the last four months to over 64%. The employees are discouraged at BIMS, performance is low, there has been an increase in the use of sick leave, and the complaints from clients have increased. In order to find the root of the problem the company will run a survey among the workers asking questions such as: how they feel about the company, and questions regarding the low morale at work. The hypothesis is that employees do not feel content with the shifts and the low salaries.
Instruments for Data Collection The instrument used for the data collection is a survey. The survey is given to all employees of BIMS in their paychecks. The survey has several questions where the employees is asked to rank the level on a scale of 1 to 5 with 1 the worst and 5 the best. The survey also has questions regarding gender, length of employment, and level of employment. The survey is optional and will give the employer an idea of how employees feel. The employees may answer some questions and not others. The survey will provide answers to what areas the employer needs to improve on, to increase moral. Level of Measurement Ordinal measurement for data is the type of data that consists of numerical scores that can be put in order with a natural order. In the case of Ballard Integrated Managed Services, Inc. Ordinal levels of measurement are used to categorize the outstanding data by groups of labels that have been assigned relative values. Those levels of measurement demonstrate an ordered relationship among the numbers of variables. Interval level of measurement for the surveys was used to estimate the time employees had been working with the company. This level of measurement categorizes, orders, and identifies that the distances between each intermission on the scale are equal along the scale from a low number to a high number of time of service. The company changed each employee’s years and months of service into full months.
Data Collection The survey had various questions regarding pay, fair treatment, shifts, and communication which the employees were to rate on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being low and 5 being excellent. The employees were also asked to give how long they had been employed with the company, what division they work, gender, and if they are a manager. The data was collected in a survey and did not have a good response rate. The data collected was both quantitative and qualitative. The questions with a rating scale are quantitative data. The questions regarding gender and department are qualitative. The company is trying to determine why the employee’s morale has gone down. Coding Data The first ten questions were coded by the ratings supplied by the employees of 1 through 5. For demographic question A, the food division was given a value of 1, the housekeeping division was given a value code of two, and the maintenance division was given a value code of three. For the demographic question B, the employees gave their total time worked for BIMS in years and months; for coding these numbers were compiled into a total number of months worked for BIMS. For demographic question C on gender of employee, the information was coded as one for female, and two for male. Finally, the information on demographic question D was coded as one if the participant is a supervisor and two for if the employee is not a supervisor. Zeros were placed in any areas of the survey where employees did not put in a value or an answer. Cleaning Data It is necessary to perform a data cleaning to eradicate the input errors in the sample data. One of the biggest errors with the data are for those who did not provide the organization with a response to the survey, so an internal decision to enter a zero for any question left blank was made. Many of those errors are found in the data, there are 5 zeros in the demographic questions and 17 zeros in question 1 through 10. Furthermore, there is another significant error within the data, as a result of a keystroke error; which occasioned an invalid value of 6 in questions 1 through 10. The applicable answer for questions 1 through 10 should reveal a value of 1,2,3,4,5 with 1 representing “Very Negative,” and in the other hand 5 representing “Very Positive” there are six occurrences of this error.
Final Conclusions The conclusion about the appropriateness of data to meet the purpose of the study was examined as to why the turnover amount increased 64% at BIMS. The survey was given to 78 employees had questions about gender, length of employment, and level of employment. The mean, median, and mode were producing the same results. The mean and median had no value higher than a five and no value less than a one for questions 1 thru 10 that included very few number 2’s. The mode value was two for question 1 thru 10. This means that the mean, median, and mode for this study seemed to be below there were more negative against gender, length of employment, and level of employment. Team B has analyzed the data from the BIMS employee survey and found the data to meet the purpose of the study.
