Race discrimination
Race discrimination occurs when a person is treated less favourably because of race, colour, and nationality, ethnic or national origin. The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful for an employer to discriminate against employees because of these characteristics.

Race discrimination covers four areas:

direct discrimination: treating someone less favourably because of their actual or perceived race, or because of the race of someone with whom they associate indirect discrimination: can occur where there is a policy, practice or procedure which applies to all workers, but particularly disadvantages people of a particular race. An example could be a requirement for all job applicants to have GCSE Maths and English: people educated in countries which don't have GCSEs would be discriminated against if equivalent qualifications were not accepted. harassment: when unwanted conduct related to race has the purpose or effect of violating an individual's dignity or creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment for that individual victimisation: unfair treatment of an employee who has made or supported a complaint about racial discrimination.
In very limited circumstances, there are some jobs which can require that the job-holder is of a particular racial group. This is known as an 'occupational requirement'. One example is where the job-holder provides personal welfare services to a limited number of people and those services can most effectively be provided by a person of a particular racial group because of cultural needs and sensitivities.

It is unlawful to discriminate against a job-seeker, worker or trainee on grounds of race, colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origins. Employers should ensure they have policies in place which are designed to prevent discrimination in:

recruitment and selection

Racial Discrimination

...Racial discrimination is when a person is treated less favorably than another person in a similar situation because of their race, color, descent, national, ethnic background or immigrant status. Everyone in the world is supposed to have equal rights and not be discriminated against because of race, however people are still discriminated against. In Johannesburg, South Africa racial discrimination is still an ongoing issue, even though Nelson Mandela took office as the first black President and tried to end discrimination. Sikhulekile Duma and his two black friends are among the people that are discriminated everyday in South Africa because of race. In The Los Angeles Times Sikhulekile was interviewed to talk about the racial discrimination he has encounter and seen while living in South Africa. In the article he says ͞one morning three young white men came into a African take out restaurant and started to harass the worker͟. Sikhulekile and his two friends told them to stop but they said whoever didn’t speak Afrikaans didn’t belong here. Sikhulekile said ͞they were whistling at them like they were whistling at dogs. They even jumped over the counter and they were patting them like dogs͟. Furthermore, he also talks about the personal racial discrimination that he has encounter with his two black friends. In the article, Sikuhulekile said ͞after leaving the restaurant in Stellenbosch near Cape Cod Town him and his friends were confronted by seven young...

Racial Discrimination

...Thesis: Racial Discrimination should be stopped. Evidence Supporting: 1. It will be a better environment to live in 2. People shouldn’t think that their race is better than others 3. It will be set in the mind that everyone is created equal and have equal opportunities 4. Racial discrimination should be stopped because it is illegal 5. It makes people feel less worthy of themselves Evidence Refuting: 1. People want to keep the world segregated 2. Some people are racist and they dislike other races 3. People don’t believe that all men are created equal 4. They believe that the other races are dirty and deserve to be treated differently 5. People believe that their race is more superior than the other Conclusion: Racial discrimination still goes on in society. Some people believe that they are better than most races sometimes even for the little things. If you don’t have the palest skin, whitest teeth or the longest hair you should be treated differently as if you are not worthy enough to live. These people still live in hatred and forever will. People need to look within the issue and not just in the country but overall. The issue is not just what was right or what was wrong but how others handled it afterwards. Racial discrimination is against the law and people who commit this crime should be prosecuted. A lot has changed since the late 1900s but this is still a big issue in society. There should be an end to racism and one day...

Racial Discrimination

...Free sample research paper on Discrimination: Discrimination – “a positive or negative attitude toward an individual based on his or her membership in a religious, racial, ethnic, political, or other groups”. (Webster’s New Word Dictionary). Discrimination is still among our nation and our world today. Many people would argue this accusation, but the fact is that if discrimination was not still present then why are there laws still banning it? Discrimination can be viewed as favorable or unfavorable, depending if a certain party receives favors or opportunities, or that party is denied these favors or opportunities. Discrimination is not just among races or ethnic groups, it is among different genders, religions, preferences in partners, and different economic qualities. The people of the world today argue about discrimination all the time. Why is it still among us? Why do people still rant and rave about it? What can be done? Why don’t we just let it be? These are the questions that people ask all the time. But, in fact, none of these questions are ever solved because of the beliefs of society. Society has put discrimination into stereotyping and many other different forms, but the point is that discrimination is here to stay and most likely will never leave. Affirmative Action is used for a diversity in the workplace or university so that discrimination can not be apart of the work environment. But, this is not the case. If discrimination was not among us than why is Affirmative...

Racial Discrimination

...Nyandire Dickens. Racial Discrimination Racial discrimination is one of the major vices that have affected human race for a long time with very many active bodies trying to eliminate it. It involves people being treated less favourably in various aspects of life depending on the social background or the skin colour that she or he possesses or background of origin. This vice is mostly dominant in housing, employment and consumer markets (Devah Pager and Hana Shepherd, 2008). Recruitment is always based on the colour of individual and at certain times black people are always exposed to some sorts of discrimination while performing their tasks in the work place. The racial behaviour may include; harassments, exclusion and labeling (sociology of discrimination, 2008). In addition, some people may be denied the opportunity to access certain residential places that are only preserved for people of specific colour. These kinds of discrimination lead to stress, anxiety and totally reduce morale of an individual in the social aspect of life (Feagin & Sikes 1994, Kessler et al. 1990). Racial discrimination is not only bad for human social life but may also diminish the effort or reduce performance in the work place. It affects both performance in labour markets and education (Ogbu 1991; Steele 1997; Loury 2002, pp. 26–33). Most organizations have been on the forefront in fighting this vice including the civil societies and the government. The National Association for the Advancement of...

...Racial Discrimination "KAFFIR". When you see or hear this word, what runs through your mind? Do you picture a man with skin the color of the midnight sky, do you see him bending his muscular body down to the dry earth to pick cotton from thorn-ridden plants? Can you feel the heat of the sun beating down on his charred back? Perhaps you can even taste the beads of sweat swelling from his forehead and arms. Or maybe you are more inclined to visualize a dark-skinned woman with creases in her forehead made by many years of hard work and endless worrying. You watch her as she puts the breakfast dishes on the table and addresses her owners with a "yes sah" or "yes ma'am". There is nobody to cater to her needs. She spends each day taking care of everyone but herself. Pain. Sorrow. Anguish. Agony. Is this what comes to your mind when you hear the word "KAFFIR"? Well, it shouldn't because the word "kaffir" has nothing to do with the color of your skin. The word "kaffir" is just that; a word. It is a term that sprouted out of ignorance and continues to be used to this day exclusively by ignorant people. A kaffir isn't a slang term for an African; it is a word that describes the person that uses it. This type of person is one who feeds his ego by dehumanizing those around him when he feels they are not equal to him. He may regard those of different races or nationalities as "bad" or "dirty" because they do not have the same skin color as he does or they may cherish...

Workplace Racial Discrimination

...Workplace Racial Discrimination October 3, 2011 Employment Law: Workplace Racial Discrimination A number of federal and state laws prohibit racial discrimination. Racial discrimination is the practice of letting a person's race or skin color unfairly become a factor when deciding who receives a job, promotion, or other employment benefit. It most often affects minority individuals who feel they have been unfairly discriminated against in favor of a Caucasian (or white) individual, but there have been recent cases where whites have claimed that reverse discrimination has occurred—that is, the minority received unfairly favorable treatment at the expense of the white individual. Racial discrimination in the workplace has been a challenging issue for the United States since awareness rose in the 1960s. Blacks and other minority workers have faced intimidation, harassment and subtler forms of racism such as the difficulty of landing a job or promotion, even when they have the requisite qualifications. The United States has been actively combating racial discrimination in the workplace for 46 years, yet challenges remain. Many people do not really know much information on how racial discrimination at workplaces may take place, but many concerns can be answered with these following questions: 1. How long has racial discrimination at workplaces been going on for? 2. What are the laws on racial discrimination about? 3. What are some reasons for racial discrimination? 4. What...

Racial Discrimination In Canada

...harm. Thus, Canada Human Right Act distinguishes between two broad types of racial discrimination. Disparate treatment occurs when individuals are deliberately treated differently because of their race. Examples include offering ethnic minorities lower starting salaries, posing different interview questions to White and ethnic minority applicants, or refusing to hire applicants of color. Disparate impact, also referred to as adverse impact, occurs when facially neutral workplace practices have an unnecessary and negative effect on members of a protected class (e.g., people of color), thereby limiting the opportunities of that group. Race-related examples of disparate impact can include a wide array of activities, including recruitment and hiring practices or unnecessary requirements for one’s appearance...

Racial Discrimination and Harassment

...Racial Discrimination and Harassment Case Study Dana Agent 3/9/2014 A very clear example of harassment based on an employees’ race is evident in the lawsuit filed against MMR Constructors, Inc. in Arkansas. An African American employee was subjected to racial harassment by white employees that included racially offensive language, graffiti and death threats. White employees went as far as going to the black employees’ home in the middle of the night and threatened his life because he apparently reported the racially charged incidents to the company. The employee reported the “midnight visit” incident to the company and the company refused to take action against the employees because it did not happen at work. When a company overlooks incidents happening on and off the worksite, it gives the harasser the impression that the company condones the behavior. Harassment by definition is the act or an instance of harassing, or disturbing, pestering, or troubling repeatedly; persecution. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions’ (EEOC) definition of harassment includes slurs, graffiti, offensive or derogatory comments, or other verbal or physical conduct. “Harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA).” (EEOC.gov) The employee was a victim of harassment and subjected to unethical...

Racial Discrimination Conclusion

...What I believe we need to look at within this issue is not simply which party was right or wrong in any issue like this or how it should have been handled afterwards or how someone should have reacted. We don’t even need to look at the racism in our own country. If the climate of our country is to improve in regards to this issue, we must look at ourselves. With this particular issue, as I’ve talked to friends about their thoughts (whether or not racism exists or has improved), I’ve often heard the phrase, “Well if they would just…” or, “They need to….” Think about it. If someone were to ask you and you were to share your honest opinion on the subject, would you have a phrase similar to that in your explanation of your opinion? Would all the problems be solved if “THEY” (whoever they are) would just realize “our” perspective and the ways we’ve struggled? If “they” would just get over “insert event from the past” then everything could improve? OR how about this one – “Most of “them” are just so “insert negative characteristic” and “they” always have to “insert negative societal behavior”. More important than “they”, what about you? What thoughts and feelings and stereotypes do you harbor? If you have a “they” statement in your set of opinions, that’s racism! Racists believe that their own race is superior to someone else’s. If a whole group of people need to just do x, y, and z, then you are placing the problem of racism onto the other group. THEY have something they...

Racial and Ethnic Discrimination

...Racial and Ethnic Discrimination Introduction * Discrimination for years and years has been seen and experience in our society. In all conscience, one could see discrimination even in animal kingdom. Animals have likes and dislikes based on factors like age, body confirmation, etc. Now, we as humans develop discrimination which appears to be granted by nature to us. Inequality rather than equality seems to be the act of nature for humans. Therefore, this discrimination can come in many colors and sizes; one good example could be one would choose the better and attractive breed of a canine other than that not so appealing. And just like this, there are many other ways for us as individuals to act on discrimination. Now when this discernment is taken further as in racial and ethnic differences the insight of this action shouldn’t be tolerable. Topics like philosophical and social implications of race, multiple racial, ethnic and cultural identities, racism, affirmative action, class conscious rather than color conscious, and the color blind principle are pointed out following. When we look at physical characteristics such as skin color from a social perspective, there is not a clear connotation; however, these physiognomies do have what we referred to as social meaning. Ethical Issues * Racial constructions and taxonomy are topics that somewhat have been rooted in the cognizance of our society by previous societies. I have come to believe that the biological sense of...

Racial Discrimination In America

...In today’s America, race is often at the forefront of conversation. If we as society can conclude that discrimination still exists today, we can take the first step toward lessening the wage gap between blacks and whites. Research suggest that there is a level of disconnect between societal perception and actual reality when it comes to this issue. Today’s society seems convinced that race is no longer a huge factor that contributes to one’s opportunities in life. We cannot solve problems that we do not know exist or that we think are already solving themselves. (Jacobs) According to Tom Jacobs, a reporter with Pacific Standards Magazine, “society acknowledges that blacks were discriminated against in the past, but are in denial as to...

...Gale Encyclopedia of Small Business: Racial Discrimination http://civilliberty.about.com/od/raceequalopportunity/tp/Racial-Discrimination.htm Racial discrimination is the practice of letting a person's race or skin color unfairly become a factor when deciding who receives a job, promotion, or other employment benefit. It most often affects minority individuals who feel they have been unfairly discriminated against in favor of a Caucasian (or white) individual, but there have been recent cases where whites have claimed that reverse discrimination has occurred—that is, the minority received unfairly favorable treatment at the expense of the white individual. Court rulings handed down through the years have determined that a company's responsibility not to discriminate based on race begins even before an individual is hired. Companies can be held liable if pre-employment screening or testing is determined to be discriminatory, if applications ask unacceptable questions designed to screen for race, or if the overall selection process is deemed to be unfair. One of the main indicators that racial discrimination has occurred in the hiring process involves the qualifications of the job applicants. While a slight difference in qualifications between a minority and nonminority candidate do not automatically indicate racial bias (if the lesser qualified nonminority candidate is hired over the minority candidate), a drastic difference in qualifications has almost always been upheld...
