In the poem Regret Today by Catherine Pulsifer, Rahim Khan offers Amir an opportunity for redemption by using parallelism, diction and metaphors, when he calls him on June 2001 to tell him to come to Pakistan. Firstly, he uses parallelism in the first stanza to portray the numerous amounts of times that Amir feels regret throughout the novel. Since Rahim Khan knew about Hassan’s rape “shortly after it happened”, he suspected that Amir was feeling sorrowful after it took place (Hosseini, 315). An instance of this was at Amir’s birthday party when he saw him leaning against a wall and told him that he “can tell [him] anything [he] want. Anytime” (106). This shows that he had doubts about Amir’s sorrow and regret before he moved to America. As a result, he uses parallelism to ask multiple questions that a person might ask while regretful. The book on the floor represents Rahim Khan becoming more like a father figure. There is a yellow and dark regret emitting from the book because the yellow light represents the story he tells and the dark shadow represents Amir’s sorrow which are intertwining as a result of the story. He tells the story in order to show that he is similar to Amir because he also loves Hazaras, but Amir twists the idea behind the story and uses it as an example to frame Hassan. Amir’s position reflects his emotions because he is keeping it all in and does not tell Rahim Khan about it. Amir has a dark shadow around him to symbolize the sorrow he feels after betraying Hassan. The yellow light around Rahim Khan represents his story which Amir twists into something more sinsister.
